Martin Popoff’s book “The Top 500 Heavy Metal Songs of All Time” was determined by people voting for the top songs. Not a single Opeth song made the top 500. But it wasn’t because people didn’t vote for Opeth songs. It was because people voted for so many different Opeth songs that no single song got enough votes.

*The first three albums are always put to the side, especially the Orchid and Morningrise cause of the production.* *But the songs on Orchid and Morningrise are amazing, all the clean and heavy riffs are incrediblely beautiful and I love them*

This. I understand that the randomness of the songs structure is a barrier for some people, but In Mist, Forest, Twilight, Advent, Night, Black Rose and To Bid are all top tier Opeth to me. It's sad that so many people can't enjoy the absolute epicness of these songs. It's a good thing Opeth evolved from that era because they told everything there was to be told, but Orchid and Morningrise are amazing to me.

The moodiest, most tragic sounding Opeth song. Ghost Reveries is just so good, the sense of emotion in this album is steeped in a combo of serene wonder and melancholy grieving, yet somehow it fits perfectly. It's a very sincere sense of brooding that I can't compare to any other band I've listened to tbh.

It's impossible to NOT get emotional while listening to this song. Mike is right, it's all about the performance. It's the dynamics in their playing. When you play cleans on the guitar, you get such different tones depending on how hard or soft you pick the note. Once you've decided on how soft to play, you then have the challenge of CONSISTENTLY playing that soft throughout the song. Mikael Åkerfeldt is an amazing guitar player. Better than he gives himself credit for.

Hey Mike, have you ever considered making a series teaching or going over some music theory concepts in depth? For the non educated(like myself) on the field it could be a bit difficult to understand the jargon and insight about the composition of a particular song, I think it would help me and others appreciate music a lot more. Opeth was may favorite band for about 20 years. Since about 2017 another band got my #1 rank. If you like experimental prog metal and you don't mind German lyrics, try The Hirsch Effekt. You won't like them at first listen, they have to grow, and they'll do, I promise. Like Opeth, no song is similar to another, so listen to more than one, or give a whole album a chance, maybe Holon : Agnosie or Eskapist. Thank me later.

This song is short but sweet in a melancholy way. The line beginning with "The years she's lost." has such sad, high vocals from Akerfeldt that are incredibly effective. The guitars blend superbly with the Mellotron here. Great stuff. However, I still prefer 'Harlequin Forrest'
