Massilia is probably one of the most underrated factions in the game, I would say. They're like a weaker Boii. They have the levy free, celtics, axes, and mid-tier swords, just not sword followers. They have worse cav, but a nice low-tier cav option in Massilian cav and a nice shock cav in Hippeus. They also have thureos, hoplites, and peltasts along with the celtic skirmishers and some bowmen. You can bring some serious cost-efficiency with celtics and axes and thorax, allowing you to take the more expensive Hippeus. Not great, but good for sure.

Fyi by this historical era, the spartans were weak as were their armies. The old system had collapsed due to lack of manpower.

thechosenonenumber They probably didn't even have hoplites anyways, Sparta I believe was one of the quickest to reform into macedonian style armies with pikes.

Sparta was not as good as you all make them out to be. Sparta was strong during the Pelloponesian wars, but by 272, they were collapsing. Besides that, at their height they weren't as legendary as you seem to think they were. They were excellent soldiers who got overblown by Zach Synders $hit show called 300.

Recently started a new Grand Campaign as Massilia after having beat Rome II for the first tie as the Getae, I found that they reached their near full military potential really quickly which lets them quite easily beat down nearby Celtic, Germanic, and Iberian tribes as well as take on Rome or Carthage too if you wish. Though through clients and mercenaries I feel my armies resemble Carthage's more than a Greeco-Celtic city-state just in my search for real striking power.

i only like to play factions that have good late game units, since it can get rather boring when you hit your prime mid-game and all you can do is spam mid-range units. It makes for a rather sad story if you have to try and spam tons of mid-range units against numerically inferior badasses like Evocati cohorts or Royal Spartans or whatever. makes me feel like the ineffective villain in a medieval fantasy movie.

i like them because they have access to light hoplites and levy freeman at the same time the reason i see that is because those very good low tier units that are decent at holding their good meat shields with a low fund siege battle meat shields can be very very useful the light hoplite(and levy freemen) is also highly agile can go from one side of the battlefield to the other quite easily in a siege (i recommend using levy freeman because they have javelins unlike light hoplites)

alfiere4316 They are nice for defending, put them in phalanx in between narrow city streets or at gate. Use them offensively and put them in the very middle of your front line. Pikes don't suck in Grand Campaign, especially against the shitty AI...

in campaign pikes are awesome, in online battles pikes are useless if you can't use them very well

@@alfiere4316I know this comment is 8 years old lol but I still have to say. Pikes are still insanely good on siege maps if you’re defending. If you stop the enemy from using projectiles and keep them alive when the enemy uses their javelins all they have left is suiciding on a pike unit.

Great battle Heir, if you can defeat any faction with Massilia you are really deserved your wooden sword. Of course there are lot of casual players in multiplayer matchmaking but let us be friendly so we can raise these TW Enthusiastic group. Negative feedback leads into dark age. I am really excited about Total War: Attila. My main concern is: Has CA fixed the AI parameter because even in hard difficulty AI behave so badly. Only option for me I guess is to play Attila on very hard mode to get some challenge. Cheers All^^!

Im still stuck on the Massilia>Macedon bit. How exactly, other then Celtic Warriors are better than Thracian mercs, is that a factual statement? Macedon has more tools than Massilia in terms of cavalry, skirmishers, infantry, hoplites, and pikes. Is it because Massilia has cheaper units, so they are more cost effective as a whole? I asked a few people who are in the competitive tournament scene and they don't agree with Heir about this either. His opponent seemed to have picked an odd army composition with very low killing power outside 2 elite units and 4 mid tier shock cavalry. Im not bashing Heir here, I just have no idea why he is saying what he is saying.

Massilia really aren't very good as massilian hotlines aren't good and neither are thorax swords. They also have no good skirmishers or mid tier cavalry, but have nice tools. However they definitely are not a good faction.

Macedon is heavily focused on pikes, and pikes don't work properly and have terrible stats.

Celtic Warriors are more durable, have precursor javelins, more staying power and are cheaper You can also bring however many you want. The Axe Warriors are great supporting infantry, while Macedon doesn't really have that. Macedon has the better cavalry for sure, but Massilia has more and better melee infantry - not to forget Levy Freemen. Massilian Cavalry is great as long as they don't get charged, and super cheap. Massilia lacks good skirmishers, but in terms of overwhelming Macedon with melee and cheap spears, Massilia absolutely can do that.

From a cav stand point as was said in other comments Macedon is superior. The levy freemen though are a nightmare for cav that needs to charge and retreat. It is easy to bring huge armies with good support infantry with Massilia and more challenging with Macedon. This is my assessment though how a faction is used obviously effects their usefulness.

anyone have any tips on beating these barbarian sword spams i always find in multiplayer? ive tried hoplites with heavy cav and egyptian galatian swords with mixed results heavy horse is very cost effective and Germanic slingers super annoying so just out skirmishing or using better cav is difficult

Kill the general, and you have them at -30 morale immediately, then -15. If you can't do that, block their charges either with cheap units or cavalry and only then send in your mid-tiers. The most capable melee faction to counter them will be Rome. You can also just not play the melee game and go super skirmish/cavalry heavy. You kill the enemy Heavy Horse on open terrain, and you win.

I find Massilia hard to play. I like the army a lot, but every time I try to play them I get attacked by everybody. Last time the Arverni declared war on me, turn one.

Build up an army first is what I usually do. Next, get in good with Rome. In my experience, the barbarians don't fuck with Rome. The Etruscan League will cancel trade with you as soon as possible, so they are certified assholes. Rome will decimate them. Just get in good with Rome.
