I began smocking for my 3 girls 32 years ago. I took a class on construction using Children's Corner patterns. You use all the exact techniques that i was taught. I don't usually make heirloom dresses for my granddaughters these days, and I miss this fashion! I lived in Alabama at the time and there was no internet, so everything was done in person. I took extensive notes and still have them. Your videos are great reminder of how to construct heirloom garments.

Sarah, Lovely video. Far more important, quite beautiful work. So polished & beautiful. I watch several of your videos, & always enjoy them. So sweet to see you wear your baby. My daughters do also, & its sweet to see such loving mothering. The verb, not the noun. If you understand. On to another video to enjoy, at this point. Have a lovely week.

Can someone help me with the lace and entreduex on the neckline? Is she sewing the lace on top of the entreduex instead of butting it together? TIA
@vickyrichardson58649 ай бұрын
I realize this was 7 years ago but I'm not sure how you put the lace and entreduex on the neck line. It doesn't look like you trimmed the entreduex after adding it to the fabric or the lace. Am I seeing that correctly? Because how would you add the lining if you've trimmed the seam allowance? Thank you.

What kind of fabric do you prefer to use when doing your pleating and lining of your outfits?
@sarahclassicsewing7 жыл бұрын
+jessica Rogers pleating -- all kinds of fabrics. Cotton batiste and lawns are my most common to pleat, but super fine flannel also pleats like a dream. Typically I self-line my outfits, but on the rare occasion that I line with a different fabric, then I generally chose imperial batiste.www.sarahclassicsewing.com/supplies-i-like-to-keep-on-hand.html

Sarah, thanks for sharing your craft with us. I've learned a lot from your videos and admire your work. I was wondering, How do you wash dresses like these (with smocking, embroidery, etc)?
@sarahclassicsewing7 жыл бұрын
Ah, that's a great topic I've forgotten to touch on. Okay.. the short story, as long as I prewash the cotton, then I put the garment through the washer and dryer on a gentle cycle. It doesn't bother the smocking or embroidery. If there are bullion stitches, then I ironed those face down on a thick towel so the towel cushions the bullion stitch keeping it from getting pressed flat by the iron. Hope that helps -- if you have other questions regarding this topic, I'd love to hear them since that'll help me put together a more thorough blog post and/or video. Thank you! :-)
@maryrecluse18397 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your response. I'd be happy to provide other questions to think about... For example, are there other fabrics you use such as lawn, velvet, gauze or silk, which you don't put in the washer and dryer? Are there detergents/washing methods that you recommend? Do you spot-treat white garments with bleach? Babies + heirloom sewing does beg the question of how to treat stains. Best wishes, Christine

Hi Sarah! How do you prep your fabric? Do you wash and iron? Thanks!!
@sarahclassicsewing4 жыл бұрын
all depends on the fabric and garment. for ready made, I often prewash in the washing machine/dryer and then iron back out. for special garments, I generally just go right into sewing.

How are you sewing the lace on the neckline to the entreduex? It doesn't appear that you are butting them together. I've looked for the video as well as the material you used and I can't find it. The lace I was trying to use is 3/4 wide and when I sewed the lining on it did not come out the way yours did. TIA

yes, sewing the lace to the entredeux. yeah, material was from 7 years ago and farmhouse fabrics' website was redone a few years ago, so all the links became null. thanks!

Hello Sarah. How would you clean and brighten up a French sewn antique apron?Thank you for your reply. Gretchen
@sarahclassicsewing7 жыл бұрын
That's a good question... and not something I have any experience with. I've heard some of my older and wiser sewing buddies use everything from vinegar to that oxi clean stuff. So I think there are several methods... try googling and reading through their blogs. Good luck :-) Oh, but I will say that for stains, I LOVE grandma's secret. Stuff is amazing and I've used it a ton on many different types of stains.

Do you install piping with a zipperfoot? Thanks so much, jo
@sarahclassicsewing7 жыл бұрын
Most of the time I use my regular foot or a groove foot. I feel like the zipper foot kinda falls off the piping, and I'm not able to get really close to the cording inside the piping.

+jessica Rogers hey there Jessica, welcome to the channel. It's great to have another young mama on here. Audrey will be ten months towards the end of April 😊 okay I have boy outfits on the list, but I don't think I can get one out before easter. We're in the middle of moving right now. But maybe you'd like to do the shadow smocked easter eggs. I tried to copy the link, but this KZbin creator app won't let me do that from my phone. Anyway, just search for it on my channel. You could do green, blue, yellow, orange, red, etc. easter eggs. I think it would be darling. Happy sewing 😙

What a sweet baby!!! This is so sweet! You'll have to do some hand embroidery videos- is like to start that on newborn clothes for Carson and yours always look like you've spent HOURS doing it! Also- I have this foot but haven't ever picked it up. Could you go into more detail with a tuck? It's not a pintuck so no need for a double needle, right? Such a fun and classic way to get some more design on a dress/skirt. I love the look!
@sarahclassicsewing7 жыл бұрын
+Maison Arness you're too sweet, thank you. And yes, embroidery videos are coming 😊 and sure, I'll do a more detailed video on the tucks. You are correct, it's not a pintuck so no twin needle.

Sarah Classic Sewing I just used your pintucks video and did some on a bubble for Carson (newest baby coming in June) it was so sweet and absolutely darling! I'm about to jump both feet in the water with doing the shirt that comes with Johnny CC. I have never done sleeve and or collars before so this is going to be a bit of a journey with learning. Do you have any videos on little collared shirts? If not- any tips would be much appreciated!
@sarahclassicsewing7 жыл бұрын
Yayy so happy to hear that it went well for you :-) I wish I could put a collars video together for you, but my stuff is all in boxes right now. Okay, just take the curves easy and don't pull while you're sewing. Also, make sure the collar edges are butted right up to each other in the front. You don't want a gap there. Sometimes I run a wide zigzag as a basting stitch to hold the edges together. Good luck :-)
