that is one of the best sounding whistles at cass....

Great footage. It's funny how people will argu about what type of whistle it is, kinda reminds me of 5 old geezers in a coffee shop arguing about what size bolt was used on the left engine mount of a 54 ford that was rebuilt 5 times before dying an ungodly death at a lake bottom.

no whistle can ever beat the nathan 6 chime steptop long bell. the king of all locomotive whistles

I believe that is a Lake Superior and Ishpoming 6 chime. They are literally just Nathan 6 chime copies. All they are is a Nathan with “LP&I” stamped on them

It's the original 6 chime that came with the Heisler when it came from the MRL back in 1967....video from the 50's has audio of this very whistle. Now, what IS it? I have no clue.

@NathanH5 thanks fred, i got some nathan 6er's recorded on my phone as my ringtone's. the best one i have was the grand trunk 6 chime step top used on Ohio Central 6325 during her first years of excursion service on the Ohio Central.

@Engineer5344 You are 100% right!! That's why so many roads copied the Nathan-6 to make their own, such as the SP. The Nathan 6-chime is definitely the king of all locomotive whistles!!

@InsensitiveCrayon They used this same whistle on the big-6 Shay the year I was there for the whistle blow. It is a marked Nathan long-bell 6-chime. Those two on the 765 and 1225 have shrouds which cause them to whippoorwill and blow totally different sounds. I have two of these big Nathans and can vouch for their sound.

@railsrust8 жыл бұрын
It's a Nathan 6 Chime. 765's whistle should sound exactly like this. The reason it doesn't is because the Nickel Plate put a shield around the whistle to deflect steam away from the engine so the crew could see better.
@ryanseals_8 жыл бұрын
+Texas Hobby Man - Aquariums, Engines & More! Its very similar to 765s whistle, just tuned differently, lacks the steam shield which further affects its tuning, and is on a bit less pressure (200 PSI vs 245 PSI).

I hate when they pour on the smoke for run-bys... It gives a false impression, making steam locomotives appear to pollute more than they actually do. A competent fireman would be embarrassed by this. Disgusting! Cool engine though...
