Everyone talks about Kirsten Flagstad, but for me, Traubel had the warmer sound and was certainly a much better singer than Birgit Nilsson, who was always too cold.

Rudolf Bing was not fond of Helen Traubel because of her willingness to perform in films and lighter fare. He even said, "Nobody knows the Traubel I've seen..."

This role, Sieglinde, fits her voice much better than her laughable attempt at Brunnhilde’s Hojotoho. Traubel had a regal heroic voice. But in her autobiography, St. Louis Woman, she admits that she was fearful of anything above high-A, and simply didn’t bother with Bs or Cs. There isn’t a single singer today who’d get away with that. They’d never get past an audition.
