The Class 16 is one of those engines that I still like, despite not being much of a looker. After looking into their history I'm shocked at how short their service lives were; it begs the question as to why they were even built in the first place. Incidentally I got one of these models from Hattons recently, though it hasn't arrived yet. I think my one is D8404 in BR green with a unique style of yellow panels.

I’ve just picked an all green class 16 from Clark’s Railworks for £110, mint, unused condition, really pleased with this purchase

I got one from Rails two weeks ago with no yellow panels and all BR green, which is how I like my diesel locos. Excellent weight and detail. It came with my new Midland Pullman special collectors edition. Only waited 48 years for one.

Congrats Jenny on your new job, it is going to be magic, working at something you enjoy so much. Looking at DCC Concept's KZbin channel, there hasn't been much posted on there so, with your input, the channel is going to be alive both fun and exciting and interesting videos. I use a few products by DCC Concepts on my DC layout and they are quality items. Good luck and best wishes, Steve

Coincidently had just put one on the track and then this review. Its great that even this obscure class got modelled. Never saw the original but so 1950/60s period charm.

"gold bits" on the solebar are probably representations of engraved Brass instruction plates. such as "only use fish oil in this bearing" or "do not polish this plate"....Excellent presentation this, JK,

I bagged the lot, trainspotting at Stratford. Just managed to get a fine example on eBay, as new no yellow ends, just how I remember seeing them in the early 60’s

Having seen your rival Sam, reviewing the class 15, there seems to be a world of difference quality-wise between the two diesels, particularly issues in loco weight (the BTH one lacks a diecast chassis!), separately fitted components, and ease of access for maintenance etc...Love the track weathering on your layout too.

Bought one a couple of years ago, but sadly the motor burnt out after 1 hour of running in.. yes it's a beautiful model, but it seemed to have been a common issue with this model from Heljan back when I bought it and prior to, from what I read on a related forum thread. Hopefully one day I'll get mine running with a new motor. I really wanted one as we had a class of loco's very similar here in Western Australia, the WAGR Y Class, introduced in 1953 and also powered by a Paxman diesel engine. cheers Paige

The problem with this Heljan loco is that the 3 pole motor is underpowered for the very heavy weight of the loco. During my running in at moderate speeds the motor burnt out after 15 minutes. I had to replace it. It should be noted that this loco is a slow runner. Being a slow runner is not a problem it itself. Only moderate pulling loads should be applied to it and running it at moderate speeds should be done to avoid motor burnout. This model needs a more powerful motor. Despite this it’s a lovely model with great detail.

Very timely video for me as I have one on its way to me from Rails. Nice to see removing the body less arduous than the Class 15. Thanks Jenny for another great video.

Hello Jenny, a very detailed loco and looks nicely made. If I ever decide to move away from vintage modelling I'd be tempted to buy one. May I make a suggestion to you about removing plugs / circuit boards, I would recommend a plastic tool to minimize the possibility of scratching, damage to fine circuit tracks etc. I nearly spilt my coffee watching you lever away with that sharp old metal screwdriver. Very good review. Best regards to you

Good morning Jennifer!! It’s a very attractive locomotive for a diesel!! And why did they make the Class 16? It was only ever a prototype!! And have Heljan put a sound chip in it?

A good review on the detail Jenny. I bought several of the Heljan locos on release except the Class 16. The Class 14 Teddy Bear had issues IIRC on release eg slow running and decoders at the time were a very tight fit. I also bought several of the Dave Alexander WM kits ie 14, 15, 16, 17 and 28 before Heljan brought theirs out. Long story short, there is no way I could build the Class 16 to the Heljan standard so had a quick look on the Bay and found the Full Yellow End version at a fair price MIB. The handrail detail, directional LEDs, paint detail, PE walkway detail and heavy diecast frame are particular standout items in your review. Just need to get all my others out the box now and maybe sell off the WM kits, though never having built a WM kit, may give one of them a go though I have them all from Heljan. Cheers

Seems odd that the cab floor is so high. Looks like there was enough room to make the cab floor lower

What was the prototypical load for this locomotive? Was it a freight locomotive or used for mixed traffic? Would a passenger train look good with it? How about a mixture of passenger AND freight?

Lovely model. Saw it when Rails announced their warehouse finds. Although its way out of region for me sadly. Would anyone know about a small goods diesel suitable for the Ipswich area in the early 60's?

If this was an unreliable locomotive, why make a model of it? Isn’t it better to market a locomotive that actually run the distance rather than a ten year wonder? Apart from that, it’s a gorgeous model which is well detailed and is a good looking one to have something different to run on a layout.

It’s nice to have models of the could-have-beens as well as the main locomotives. It gives you options for modelling specific periods; and also to imagine what a line could have looked like if things had gone different.
