This was a great role for Jeff Bridges, as much as he is an old hippie in real life, he has perfected the old strict codger of a man mannerisms quite well. Especially with his classic distinctive lower jaw loose pultruding lip speaking style.

One belt is their pants belt, the other belt is their police gun/utility belt. You wear both because you often want to remove the utility/gun belt as its bulky and uncomfortable to sit in car for long periods of time with it on. A Texas Ranger is a policing force authorized by the state that operates across county and city limits. They are specifically responsible for taking on violent crimes, serial crimes, corruption, crime scene expertise and various broader jurisdictional crimes. They are almost like an FBI specifically for Texas. The reason the Rangers existed and still exist is because Texas's large open areas with little population resulted in many under equipped and under prepared police forces. Criminals would easily travel from county to county committing crimes and evading police specifically because of jurisdictional issues. They were specifically separated from the State Police force to keep them focused on the less populated areas of Texas in addition to remove them from potential corruption that plagued state police in the 1800 and early-1900s. Back in those days they were generally made up of the relentless unswayable type of officer who the state government would intentionally look the other way on any "less orthodox" methods of getting the job done. In modern times they are made up of officers who have more in depth detective and crime scene experience and training and are usually called in to look at crimes in these under equipped lower population areas. They are called to assist police forces, but if a crime seems to span jurisdictions they are empowered to take ownership of the cases and lead any local law enforcement. $150 acre is a little cheap unless you just want surface rights on land with gas or oil wells on it, no water, and poor accessibility. Generally, you’re looking at $300-1200 per acre in todays inflated dollar. Over by the Mexico boarder by Valentine, Marfa, or Plata is about the cheaper end of that scale. Not much water and what exists is about 200-350ft deep or so and what is usually pretty alkaline (8-8.5), no oil or gas, mostly just sand swept ground with low organic content over hard pack calache with lots of calcium and silicon carbonate.

Thanks for doing this one, I hope you enjoyed it. This movie will always be very near and dear to me as it was the last movie my dad and I watched together before he passed away Feb of last year.

This is one of my favorite movies. I love westerns, and it gives that western feel in a modern setting. I also grew up in Oklahoma, and I can't tell you how many diner waitresses I've met in my life who are EXACTLY like the "So, what don't you want?" lady, haha. Reminds me of home.

Definitely need to react to The Big Short. You're head would pop with the stupidity on wall street & what the banks did. Also this is part of Taylor Sheridan modern westerns: Wind River, Sicario & Hell or High Water. All exploring the gray areas of morality.

The bank and the brothers knew about the oil. That's why the bank wanted it. The last job was needed to complete to amount owed to the bank. The oil was also why the bank was quick to manage the trust and slow to indicate the brother as a suspect.

This is west Texas..very north but not quite to the panhandle. I live 30 minutes from there.

Yep I live up in the panhangle, but this pretty accurately depicts a lot of North and West Texas. Small little towns dotting the landscape as islands in a vast sea of fields.

In Colorado I had a neighbor who would ride his horse through the McDonald's Drive Thru. The employees looked forward to his visits, and would feed the horse mini carrots and apple slices through the window. So in that scene with the horse, maybe he just rode his horse to the mini mart for a beer.

Allow me to recommend another Sheridan film, Wind River. Just as gripping, great script and performances, beautifully done.

People like Ben Fosters character exist in real life, at least in regards to his alcoholism. I have family members that could drink beer or wine all day like soda or water and never get drunk. For them, only hard liquor can really get them drunk. Its just a higher tolerance built up over time. Sadly.

Yep. I think it was changed in 2021 or late 2020. I remember being very concerned about that. I had to withdraw $2,000 from my credit union and I was told I’d need to make an appointment to collect the money and it would require a manager’s approval. It also took a week for them to get the money because they didn’t have that much cash on hand. Absolutely ridiculous.

If you liked this one as much as it seems like you did, you should watch a lot more Taylor Sheridan movies. Wind River would be my first suggestion, but don't stop there. Those who wish me dead, the 1883 series, lawman: bass Reeves are also must-see Taylor Sheridan greats

Did you take 6 hours to watch this movie pausing every 3 minutes? It's a great movie with phenomenal shots and scenery with a ton of small hints to pick up on. It would take forever to stop and talk about all of them.
