I did a quick Google search: "Under normal storage conditions, most manufacturers say you can expect the color change to work for six months to a year. This applies to certain other types of color-change polishes, such as solar polish."

Yes, they can die. I had one from a different indie brand and it died within 2 months (even though it was stored in my helmer).
