To me, it's a brilliant idea having a sharp-edged fire steel scraper area at the butt of the knife, rather than on the spine. Then you can keep the spine of the knife nice and rounded so when you're carving with it, you don't have an uncomfortable sharp edge to press your thumb on
@westcoastbushcrafters8 ай бұрын
We guess it is a personal preference. We like sharp spines but at the same time we always use leather gloves.

I own this one, battoned a lot of wood for my stove and it is still paper cutting sharp. I think it's so easy to batton wood because of the thick belly that gets used as a wedge instead of the cutting edge.

Hi, a visit. Nice review. I am going to check out the Temagami in 14C28N. I have a Casström No 10 in 14C28N and find it works very well.

Welcome visitor with a good taste in knives 😁👍! Do you have a flatgrind or a scandi grind on your No.10? Fantastic knife with a fantastic grip/ handle! Temagami we have been fortunate to test from a fellow bushcraft friend / knife collector a while ago. Gave the feeling of a very well balanced, light knife that can make super nice thin feathersticks👌. On the wishlist for a while now, not removing it but have not purchased it either. Please let us know what you think of it if you have tested it😁👍

@@westcoastbushcrafters I think it is a good knife. My wife ended up liking it more than I did and I gave it to her for her camping bag. I think I might try the nord next but I kind of wish Helle made a fixed blade in the middle of the two in sizes because I really like them.

Hi my name is Tony and I live in Yorkshire England by the way love your channel lads Would love to see a head to head Bushcraft competition between the.helle utvaer and the casstrom lars falt I know you said in your review that the Helle felt like a kids knife but I don’t understand why because the lars falt is 230 mm and the Helle is 220 mm not much in it?
@westcoastbushcraftersАй бұрын
Hi Tony! Thanks a lot for your comment. Haha yeah with 10 mm difference you don’t expect such different knife feeling theoretically. Well we think it is a very interesting request you wrote us and just planted a seed to such an episode with my fellow bushcrafter. We are going to think about it this weekend and come back to you if we going to put those to the test very soon or need to be scheduled little bit later on😁👍.

Hej! Thanks!😁👍 We used the fällkniven dc4 and cc4 for sharpning. For stropping we use a fieldstrop with bark river white compound and after that a flexible fieldstrop with DBK 0.25 microns. Makes it hair popping sharp when you are in the woods. Ow yeah and my mother made a bag that fits it all😁👍.

Helle Utvær, small handle yes, for small hands. You should instead go for the Helle Temagami, another on of their (semi-)fulltang knives. Both the Utvær and the Carbon version of the Temagami use laminated steel that is too soft for firesteel striking (same for the laminated stainless version of the Temagami they no longer offer). The new Temagami in Sandvik 14C28N on the other hand works very well with firesteels. Steel is hard enough and it comes with a sharpened spine. Haven't tried the Nord yet of course (not out yet).

Great comment Fjell Wood! Thanks for the information! When Gearofsteel joined us for a bushcraft weekend he brought a Temagami. Great knife and good handle! Very easy for feathersticking. We are looking very forward to the release of the Helle Nord:) which is also in 14C28N. Take care!

Hey, Just a small correction, I hope you don't mind. The Utvær is made with a Sandvik 12C27 steel blade and can be used to strike a fire steel.

Great review guys! I just can’t bring myself to be interested in this knife though. Here in the US they go for about $225 and that is way too much for a knife made from 12c27. You are much better off with an LT Wright or a Casstrom at that price point. Helle really needs to step up their game in my opinion. I say that as someone who owns 5 other Helle knives. I doubt there will be a 6th though.
@westcoastbushcrafters Жыл бұрын
Hi Martin! Thanks for your reaction. You absolutely have a point. Even in Europe that one is quite expensive. In that price range there are quite a lot very interesting knives to choice. Take care!
@tor2919 Жыл бұрын
12c27 is a great steel. For me it’s become my favourite. I have owned more expensive powder steels but find them harder to sharpen in the field. I don’t think Casström is made in Sweden (only designed there) so that’s not really a fair comparison. If we want to keep having knives actually made in Norway/Sweden/Finland we should support the brands that make them there - like Helle or Morakniv.

I wouldn't buy a knife with that steel for £150. It's a standard budget steel that I would expect to pay no more than £60. I would buy a Helle knife as they look great and are nice to hold, but I couldn't justify that price for that steel. That sort of money is getting into S30V territory, and that steel as way better than 12C.
@westcoastbushcrafters8 ай бұрын
Yeah maybe it is a bit crazy on the knife market. At the same time we don’t think it is easy for knife companies that produce semi handmade or handmade knives nowadays for a very competitive price. Especially in Norway😂 (very high salary)
