Thank you for speaking about Palestine and acknowledging the last 75 years. The internet needs more people like you, who are not afraid of speaking out in the name of justice ❤

Let’s not forget the Arabs lost the war with Israel. If the Arabs had won the wars they would have never given Palestines land. The Arab countries were only interested in expanding their countries. Just look at what Jordan did. Look at how Egypt has treated the Palestinians. Where have the Arab countries been during this war? The only country supporting the Palestinians is Iran and they are not even Arab.

@@bngr_bngr Thank you. We cannot forget this at all. It's with much compassion that I have for the people living in Gaza territory who are subjected to terror and experiencing suffering, but it's highly disappointing that Jess did not, in just simple acknowledgement, especially given the timing of this video, bring up the tragedy of October 7th as the starting reason for this current conflict, nor the hostages, nor the accomplishment in taking out of the high leader of Hamas. People need to know that Hamas, a globally-recognized terrorist organization, which stemmed as part of the Muslim Brotherhood. Their official name is interpreted as Islamic Resistance Movement. Their intentions can be read in their charter, which can be found on any official government website, both original and revisions, which is rooted in anti-semitism. Beliefs of their various leaders and partners are widely published online in written and video form, which include denial of the Holocaust. I'm glad you mentioned the other surrounding countries not taking the mainstay people in as refugees, since largely it is because Hamas has such a destructive history. Like you said. From trying to overthrow other governments like in Jordan, or stirring up prison populations to revolt and anti-Israeli protests like in Egypt. Hamas terrorists and their factions are deeply imbedded within the population. An entire generation raised to propagate hate, which is the fall out of what we're seeing right now. Their military fighters don't wear uniforms, they use neutral spaces like hospitals, schools, and mosques to hide their weaponry and carry out attacks in order to hide behind their own people. All in violation of International Humanitarian Law. Published examples can be found on the UNWRA website. I'll list just a well-known historic one: UNRWA CONDEMNS PLACEMENT OF ROCKETS, FOR A SECOND TIME, IN ONE OF ITS SCHOOLS, 2014. Anyone can also research the nature of the event with school book distribution that teaches horrific ideology, since there are people who deny that it even occurred. Again sourced from the official website, which states "After its publication, UNRWA acknowledged it had “mistakenly” produced and distributed “inappropriate material” to Palestinian students." It can be hard for some to believe, but if anyone is in denial about what evil regimes do in great lengths to accomplish their ideals, an example is the Iranian regime sending forth child soldiers with “keys to Heaven." Similar political and military groups who have established themselves elsewhere, also by proxy support of Iran and other countries, like the Houthis, I'd encourage people just to read their flag, as translated from Arabic. It will tell anyone everything they need to know. I think it's great people in the region can tell their stories, they need to be heard, but there is much more to say with a simple acknowledgement that's not just speaking to Hamas talking points.

Echoing some of the other comments - thank you for speaking about Palestine ❤ I’ve been following you since early 2015 (I found your channel because I studied abroad at the University of Edinburgh that year and wanted to get a feel for the campus / student life before my classes started in September; fun fact, I also studied literature!). Anyway, I’m mostly a silent viewer but wanted to pop in to say I feel like I’ve grown with you over the years and still love your content ❤

I’ve been following you and your channel since I was a teenager (I’m 26 now) and I just wanted to say how much I’ve loved your content over the years ❤ I remember watching your vlogs when you were in Edinburgh for uni and being so amazed at how knowledgeable you were about literature. I studied applied math in college so I knew very little (and probably still do haha) about books. I’ve just recently started reading regularly and your recommendations are incredible valuable to me, especially when you talk about english books. English is my second language (I’m French) so I didn’t learn much about English authors in school.

I support people leaning into their own natural creative modes and productivity levels. Life is too much as it is to be stressing over producing things that others will approve of. I miss vlogs but these book videos have always brought my life joy and value because I find new things to read and new ways to think about books I’ve already read. I feel like Jess has helped me evolve as a reader truly. ❤

We will continue to champion for the human rights of Palestinians and others who are being oppressed and occupied. Small acts can create huge impact. I personally have boycotted many companies who support the illegal settlements/ directly invest in weapons used against Palestinians. We can all make a difference in some way. I really get what you’re saying about taste and wanting something challenging while being a student of the weird- have you read White is For Witching by Helen Oyeyemi? I feel like you might appreciate it a lot, as a piece of weird dark “horror” that doesn’t try to scare you and is pretty thinky. Lots of messing with the British canon literarily as well I think. So jealous you got to see Shibli speak live! What a brilliant woman. Have you read Everett’s Erasure? I forgot if you have mentioned it or not. I think the use of language in that book was really interesting as well. Loved what you had to say about Hild! Sounds really interesting. Griffith seems to have great range as a writer because I really enjoyed her novella length Arthurian retelling as well as her more autofictional seeming book about chronic degenerative illness, specifically MS. Enjoyed the wrap up greatly as always Jess!
@sunbeamsjess2 ай бұрын
Yes I read White is For Witching a few years ago and really liked it!! Definitely my kinda horror vibe. I've loved Oyeyemi since I was a kid because she wrote this book The Icarus Girl when she was just a teenager herself and I remember being absolutely enamoured with it (and jealous of her work ethic lol). I know she tends to really split the crowd but I need to read more of her books, a fascinating author! I haven't read Erasure yet but it's very high on my list! I did watch American Fiction though so I've got the gist, but I know it's generally considered nowhere near as good as the book. Looking forward to it! Hope you get on with Hild if/when you read it, I definitely want to read her other work too and see what she's like in other modes.

What a fantastic bunch of books. I've had the Olondria books and Hild on my TBR for ages, you're inspiring me to finally get to them. And I think I tried Dandelion Wine and didn't get far, even though I've really enjoyed Bradbury's short stories. I should try again. I'm also sad that My Friends didn't make the Booker shortlist. I listened to the audio narrated by the author - fantastic. Piñeiro is fast becoming a favorite author - I'd suggest A Little Luck next. I'm kind of relieved to hear someone else say Monte Cristo isn't all that. Yes, rollicking adventure, but I guess I need more than that to really love a book. I've been piddling along, putting it down for long stretches! The plan was to read it to improve my French - for that a straightforward story with a lot of plot/dialog is actually not a bad choice, so I'll continue to piddle along...
@sunbeamsjess2 ай бұрын
Ah I really hope you enjoy Hild/Olondria! Let me know how you get on with them. I do think there is something similar in the feel of both. Definitely think I'm going to go with A Little Luck next, I've heard a few more mixed things about her newest work! Also yes Monte Cristo (so jealous you can read it in the French!)... I can see why it was so popular at the time and endures, but like you I don't think it's my favourite kind of book. In the end I had to really dedicate some time to it or I knew it would languish on my 'currently reading' for far too long!

Long time subscriber-here for the bookish content! I am seeking opinions on a series not mentioned in this video but one I started reading after Jess recommended it- so maybe someone in this thread is familiar. I looooved Assassin's Apprentice and the entire Farseer trilogy. I was hooked. So I naturally started live ship next, however, I am struggling with ship of magic. I'm a little over 100 pages in and it's dragging. Should I power on? Does this book get better? What about the live ship trilogy as a whole? If not, can I skip to the Fitz and Fool trilogy? I don't want to give up on the entire series as a whole, maybe just bounce to a different trilogy more similar to Farseer. Thanks in advance!
