Hello! Do you watch my English videos (at least in part) to improve/practice your English? How do you decide which language to watch my videos in when there's a German and English video? Thanks so much for your feedback in the comments!!🤩

Like so many Germans, I also watch the English video first - and oftentimes I don't watch the German video afterwards, when they have the same content (but if there's Questions for Germans in German, and Questions for Americans in English, I usually watch both, becuase they are likely to be different questions). The reason is, like with so many others, that I am used to you speaking English, and while I am a German native speaker, I generally prefer listening to someone speaking in their native language, at least while I understand and speak that language as well. I usually get notified about both videos (but I've been subscribed to your channel since your colaboration with Sam Walton, so not just since yesterday). If I didn't get notified about both videos, I would have seen them on the "my subscriptions" page of youtube, I guess.

The English version reflects the impressions that a US-American living in Germany gains over time. Unlike some other KZbin videos, the clarity of your pronunciation makes it easier to watch your English-language videos. The German version gives the viewer a good insight into the challenges of learning a foreign language. In the last few years, you have reached an impressive level. However, it also makes one realize that even small details can be very important for comprehension. Slightly disappointing is the low level of interest from the US. How many students are learning in the USA German at school?

I watch mostly the english ones not especially to learn the language, but because you offer interesting insights to the differences in culture etc. That's always great to see. I know, You do this in the german vids too, but you are way more familiar to me in your mother tongue.

I've seen the English and German version of this video. And it's easier for me (as a German) to watch it in English. It's more fluent and easier to undestand. Probably because I'm not constantly (subconsciously) listening to every mispronunciation which throws me off a bit. But I have that in German, too. Dialects are quite difficult for me.

English is also close to native although its a more American English. So i can understand both English and German versions of your videos

German in Germany here 😊 I usually watch the English video. I think I'm just used to listening to you speaking English, also I never had any trouble understanding you at all, so I don't really see the need to switch to the German version. I like your videos a lot and I have watched a couple of them in German just to hear you talk German, but I will continue to watch in English as long as you put out English videos 😊

I'm German and have been living here my whole life. When you're doing two videos with the exact same content, I only watch one and it is always the English version. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike your videos in German, they are as charming as the English ones, it's just so that it seems the natural thing to do. You are a native speaker of English and therefore most comfortable with English. You will find the exact wording that expresses your thoughts in your native language, which could be lost in translation. To avoid such a loss I will continue to watch the English versions and the German videos only if there's no English counterpart.

Knowing the subject and "script", I can understand a little more of the German than without. I really appreciate the subtitles!!!!!!!!!!! They help a lot. German dude here living in Bavaria in his 40’s. If there are 2 videos I'll usually pick the English one. This is what I am used to watch since a while now and listening to you speaking English feels a bit more natural to me. Stuff I watch on KZbin happens to be about 90% English anyway, and usually I prefer watching movies in English OV over dubbed versions. So my choice of language might not be too surprising. Thanks for all the content

American here! I don't speak German, but I often times watch both videos either to support your channel or for some kind of background noise. I grew up with a German family (my mom speaks German, my maternal grandparents are German immigrants, and a large portion of my family lives in Bavaria) and I am able to pick up on some of the German words in your videos from listening to my family speak German and from picking up a few words here and there from when I visited Germany. I don't always watch the German videos, but I do find it entertaining to see how much I can understand in your German videos.

I will be hopelessly German and blunt here: I usually listen to you in the background while I work. And my brain finds it easier to listen to you in a foreign language that I speak fluently than autocorrect for your accented pronunciation. Sorry. PS: I always "watch" with English subtitles on because my app automatically switches them on and since I don't look at the screen I'm too lazy to switch them off.

I love watching your videos both in English and in German so that hopefully I could learn/practice my German! But I first started watching your videos oh my god 5 ish year’s ago. Because I was trying to prepare myself about “people, places and culture” of Germany! Because of your videos it helped me so I didn’t have a huge cultural shock. Even tho both times I went with my school and our teacher tried to prepare us for the trip. Your videos even oddly helped me when I went to a farmer’s market with my host family! My host dad was asking me the name of different fruits and vegetables in German. One of the vegetables was white asparagus. I thought of your video and his face said more than a million words!🤣🤣🤣 Because like you said in your video we do not have a white asparagus season in America. So Donna I want say thank you so very much for all help and all stuff you have all taught me.

Hi Dana, always fun to watch your videos. I'm German, living in Canada. So I have an expat's perspective both on my home country and on North America. Your videos are mirroring that experience, that's what I find most interesting. Since you've started doing videos in both languages on the same topics I've sometimes watched and liked both of them. But I've been following your channel for years now and I'll continue to watch the English version if I do not want to take the time watching the same video in different languages because it just seems more natural listening to you speaking English. BTW, the notifications work on my end and show me both versions of the videos.

Who am I and why do I watch your videos? I am an American. I am from an area of the USA that is exclusively monolingual in English. I didn't do very well in middle school or high school. Then one day I was in French class (which I was on the verge of flunking out of) and I had a breakthrough. Suddenly, grammar (which I had never understood) all fell into place for me, and I went from being the worst student in the class to being the best. I now know that my learning style is very different from what teachers want to see (which is why I did so poorly in school), and that's especially true for my approach to learning languages. I studied German as well as French the next two years, and then I went on to be a foreign language major in college because it was the only thing I was good at. That turned out to be a mistake, as there was no job waiting for me when I got out of college. I would have been better off to have skipped college altogether. I watch YT videos in German and French to get some listening practice and to see how badly my foreign language skills have deteriorated in the past 35 years. As you can see, I don't respond in German. If I were to translate this comment into German, it would take me hours to do so, and I don't have that kind of time to devote to something as inconsequential as a YT comment. I have noticed some unconscious changes to my approach to foreign languages have taken place over the last 35 years, though. Any foreign language that I hadn't studied used to be absolutely impenetrable to me. I couldn't understand even the simplest things in Spanish despite having studied French. A lot of people at college mocked me for this. Now I find I can sometimes understand bits and pieces of both Spanish and Italian. I guess my brain has been doing something during all this time that I've let my foreign language skills lie fallow. I find that I can also sometimes understand Dutch, but it's not as easy as Spanish or Italian. If I can understand something in Spanish or Italian, my comprehension is immediate. When it comes to Dutch, at first it's incomprehensible, and then I say to myself, "Oh--that would be _blah blah blah_ in German"--and then I understand it.

Why?... Resons are uplifting. Im german and i watch the english version because it helps my own english skill while listen to you. You speak a very clear understandable english version and this in a very cute temperament. Second reason: You enables a little view into "How americans think"... so from my point of view i understand Americans in general better because of your videos. U.S. viewer. I normally watch the English version. Sometimes I feel like watching the German version, though, because I took several years of German in high school, yet I find it very difficult to understand videos from native Germans. Weirdly, I suppose because of your American accent, I can understand your German surprisingly well. Thus it's fun to "practice" my German by listening to an American speak it. 🤔

I am a native german speaker and understand english usually without any hassle. I watch whatever you come up with. If you have two versions I watch both versions if I have the time. If not I prefer the German video, because you sometimes give me clever ideas about my native language. I grew up with it, so I have few feeling about how special and fun some sayings and words are. You are able to give me a look on my language from another point of view. I confess that I always turn off your subtitles. As long as I understand everything they distract me from the video and what you are talking about. I am interested in languages in general and when you speak german I feel kind of a companionship with me learning for instance norwegian. It is not only a different language that one explores but a different culture what makes it even more interesting. And every day words (Mülldeponie!) suddenly sound like something enchanted. 🤩

American in America. I speak English and some French. I've watched the channel for years. I always watch the English videos. I've thought of going to live in Europe myself over the years. As someone who speaks a second language herself, I will sometimes watch the German videos (even though French is my second language) to hear how you have progressed learning German. I love hearing you just speak, fluently, in a second language. It makes me want to re-learn French. Also, as others have pointed out, you explain your point a little differently in each language. Sometimes it adds more insight.

I only just discovered the paired videos in both languages. I'm a beginner German student and I'm trying to watch the English video first so I have some idea what it's about, then watch the German video and see how much I can follow along. I'd probably find I only understood a quarter of it without the prior knowledge. I watch a lot of Easy German videos but sometimes I end up reading instead of listening, so I think your approach is going to be useful to me. In any event, thanks for making them.

German from Germany Here :) I tend to primarily watch your English videos for several reasons: I guess I'm kinda used to listening to you speaking English and although I generally like British better and try to find someone to listen to as a sort of "role model" for my pronunciation, I found I just really like listening to you talking in English (nice and clear pronunciation, enthusiastic, ..) I like it better to gain new insights into the cultural differences between Germany and the USA while having this sort of "Outside View" from the American perspective Last but not least: I feel like you're more at ease with talking in your L1 (of course you are, who wouldn't be?) and that makes the videos seem somehow more authentic to me if that makes any sense at all? All that is to say with the background information that I definitely still enjoy watching videos with you speaking German every now and then - it's also nice to see how your pronunciation and grammar evolve Hope this was any help at all and not just me blabbing on about sth :D

I watch your videos in English. The reasons: I was born here in Munich, grew up in an Bavarian/American environment, my cousins came from the US (Florida and later New Mexiko) and you sound very similar to my cousin Anita. As kids we spoke a crude mixture of Bavarian and English, and when you talk, I remember the time, when we were young (in der early sixties). Meanwhile my favorite locations in Munich do no longer exist (McGraw facility in Harlaching, the AFN and so on), but when I see your videos and hear you talking, the memories are present again.

I have been in Germany 40 years ago and understand some German, but not much. Like I can still count in German and know small phrases . So I watch your German version just top see how I remember... I mainly check you people out is because I loved being in Germany and like to see what's the same and what's different after reunification . BTW I'm from Wis and we still have lots of German traditions , fests and some culture. One video you can do is ask feedback on what's the same and what's different in Germany after the country reunited. I remember us soldiers had to do lots of bs and I'm sure native Germans did the same thing. It's been 30 years so maybe some have no idea what life was in Germany like before ,and some old people like me would like to know what it's like today not having to worry about the Soviets.

Hi Dana! I'm a german native, watching at last the english version. It depends on how much time I've got, if I watch the german afterwards. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. My main reason to watch your videos is to get a different view to my culture, my language, my own habits. I really adore you speaking german (and seeing/hearing your approvements). I can't exactly say, why I start with the english version, maybe, it's because I am so much used to watch your videos in english, or I want to know, if I can challenge the english version, or I just get the notification of the english version first... I guess, it's a mixture of it. (I think I got all notifications, but I'm not sure.) To give you an example, what I recently stumbled upon: "hell" (adj) in German can mean a) "light" as with colors: light blue (helles Blau or Hellblau), light grey (helles Grau or Hellgrau),... b) "bright" as in bright light (helles Licht), bright sunlight (helles Sonnenlicht) c) "clear": after a brief shower, the sky became clear again (nach einem kurzen Schauer wurde der Himmel wieder hell) And then there is a noun "Helles", I leave it to you finding out what this is... ;) "light" OTOH can mean: as an adjective: a) "hell" as in hellblau (light blue) and so on b) "leicht" with regard to the weight of a thing as a noun: "Licht" oder "Leuchte" (Lichtquelle, Beleuchtungskörper) or "Ampel" for the traffic lights as a verb: "anzünden", "beleuchten",...

I subscribed to your videos because I am interested in your perspective on us Germans and German affairs. I usually watch the English video first because it helps me practice my English. You shouldn't be too modest though. I'm sure there are many people who just find you nice and watch your videos, no matter what language you speak. You can't expect too much from Austria, it's a small country with only nine million inhabitants, only 11 percent of the German population (83 million).

I saw both versions of the video in my youtube timeline. For me the main reason to watch the english version is to improve my english. I don‘t really know if it‘s improving, but I‘m actually at the point where I can listen to you speaking in the video while I‘m reading comments in the comment section. So at least my comprehension seems to improve. And not for your video but for some native english speakers with a heavy dialect I still need subtitles to understand what they are saying.

I'm German and live in Germany. I started watching english speaking videos, because I wanted to know, what foreigners think about Germany and it's inhibitants. Then I recognized, my english understanding abilities improve (what a surprise!) and got stuck at some of the creators (those I could understand without difficulties). So I watch at first your English video and than your German video out of curiosity and because I'm amazed by your German skills (and the algorithm)

Hello Dana, a German in Germany here (so I apologize in advance for my bad English): I found you on Yotube years ago (2017 or 2018), when you made your videos just in English. So I am used to listen to you in English. But to be honest I did not watch you for the last 2 years. Just one Week ago I reclicked on your channel and I wondered myself: why did I stopped watching you? You are such an sympathic, positive person and I enjoy watching you English videos. You have a nice pronunciation and clear voice, it is easy to understand you in English, I like that a lot. :Thumbs up: Then I recognized you German versions of videos and I thought: weird. I watched some of the German videos as well, which I also enjoyed, but I still prefer the English ones. For me: Dana = Speaking English :) BUT: Past in 2018 I remember I was always excited to hear you speaking German, because it was new and kinda funny and also kinda other Dana (another facet of this fascinating person). So when I saw your "new" German videos of course I watched them, but then I switched back to your English videos, because they seem to be more you for me. Interestingly: KZbin algorithm recommended the German version, so I watched both (led to the english version by your info-box). Keep going, I guess I would watch you no matter in which language. To describe how I watched the videos I missed the last few years, I would say: "Ich habe sie (die Videos) weggesuchtet." :D And one last mention: Watching your "new" German video I recognized how much you improved your German - it is amazing to see this progress, pretty cool.

First for the reason which is already stated in a couple of comment here: You´re more precise on the issue in English because it´s your native language. I'm American in America; German is my fourth, and first non-native, language. I think I watched both the questions for Americans and the questions for Germans, but normally, if a video comes out in two languages, I'll watch just one. For yours, it's more often the English version, but I think I watched Name in German. For David Tuggy's videos, it's whichever comes first in my feed, which I think is usually Spanish (my third language).

German in Germany here. I watch usually the english vids. I prefer english in general for all of my media content ( YT, Netflix …) That goes to a point that I will watch the English speaking videos of german youtubers even if their English sounds terrible ( I hate the german accent in an English voise, don´t ask me why) As you guessed it, I like to improve me English in that way. Since I started watching movies and playing games in English at the age of 15 ( over 15 years ago) it improved to a point that I can not remember in what language I watched something a week after watching it. I have one of these German brains that get triggered to the English mode as soon as someone speaks not a “ clean” German , I want to help them and switch to English.. that although extents in videos. I know that doesn’t make sense in that case. Keep up the good work! I hope the german video´s find an audience that appreciate them.

Dutchie here watching the English version. To me, English is easier than German, but if pressed, I would be able to fully understand the German version. Also, there are a lot of people in the border area with Germany who speak German as well as Dutch. For most Dutch people, English is their 2nd language, and we get English lessons at secondary school. And depending on the level of said secondary school, you'd also get German, French, Spanish or Chinese (the last 2 are rare, but people do take them )

Native German here as well: I watch most content in English (and have been watching your content in English for years now). So if I get a choice between German and English, I choose English. But what I have also noticed is that with my C2-level of proficiency in English I actually find it EASIER understanding a native English speaker speaking English compared to someone speaking not quite perfect German. Your German is amazing, don't get me wrong! I have absolutely NO issue understanding you, but I think that tiny mistakes and the slight accent just mean that my brain has to make a few more adjustments while understanding which it doesn't have to do in English because I am so used to your specific English. If you had a strong accent in English and I was a new viewer that would probably even it out, having to adjust in both languages. But being so used to your English as I am, it is simply easier for me to watch the videos in English. Takes a fraction less brain power :'D As for subtitles - I personally don't use or need them for your English videos but subtitles generally make your videos more accessible not only for people learning a language but also for people with partial or full hearing loss. Creating subtitles is very time consuming but if you can supply them, it would be nice to make a small corner of the internet more accessible ^^ And I usually get both videos in my subbox very consistently :)

I'm from Innsbruck, Austria, and I watch each video, i.e. both if you release a pair. I don't see a reason not to watch either one. Furthermore it's interesting to hear your German improve respectively hear which corners of German you still struggle with ;-) I'm sure there are even more corners of English that I still struggle with ;-))) But I guess I'm not a typical native German speaker. I strongly prefer to consume English-made content in English over any dubbing or translation, both to improve my English and because there are always details lost in translation. I even have my browser configured English-first, and I even switch my smartphone to English on and off. Dubbing disclaimer: On rare occations the translation adds a joke or a reference to "our" culture, but too rare. There's one general exception, the British TV series "The Persuaders!"/"Die Zwei" is rather boring in English but quite funny in German, because the German dubbing is an almost continuous firework of jokes and wordplay.

Hi, I'm native German, living in Germany. I started to watch your channel, because I was interested in how an American living here sees Germany. It helps to see another perspective on your own country, and your videos definitely helped me to value my country more.

Hello Dana, i am a german in germany, and i used your and other chanels to entertain myself with some outside views on germany, coming from americans or other countries. I am used to talk in english with my american colleagues, so i prefer to watch the english clips, as they, to me, sound much more authentical. Of course it is much more comfortable to listen to somebody talking in her mother language (and it does make a real positive difference in your videos). To be honest - well, i am german - the first videos i watched from you were very typical topics like "reverse cultural shock" etc., and those i found okay, but the high number of followers still surprised me. After watching the more serious contend, like political topics, i recognized the reason for this quite successfull chanel. I liked listening to your clip two weeks after Trumps start of presidency - that really was a profound statement. If i was you, i would concentrate on those topics.
