I've always loved this solo! It has withstood the test of time. It's still a killer solo.

Great lesson, it really helps me delve into a rather unknown style of playing for me. Love the Tele - kind of a Jeff Beck '54 body color with black guard. Christian PU is a great touch. I've got a Strat in my neck position, it makes such a difference.

The pick correction is correct, pick and middle finger a finder. 100 percent correct, I,ve studied him for years.

Yes, James uses a pick and a thumb pick on his 2nd finger. Thank you, Paul.

Just an incredibly good lesson, analysis, and perfect execution of the solo, broken down into clear elements. Now.....I only wish I had the hand, finger dexterity and bendability, the timing and multi-tasking with the travis picking to make it sound like you demonstrate.....my best guitar days are sadly behind me, but my knowledge and insight on the inner workings of the music and what makes the sound so damn enjoyable, keeps expanding. I wish You Tube was available in the 1960's......when the Beatles hit Sullivan stage. Things might have been a little different for guitar wannabes like this commentator. Bravo, Jason, if you can publish more of your lessons, we'd love it.

Small correction - I believe Burton uses a Fender medium flatpack (not a thumb pick) and one metal fingerpick on his middle finger. Nice job on the lesson.

Hi, Yes that is the case most of the time but when I played with him he was using a thumb pick and banjo pick. He said he changes it up sometimes. I wish I asked him about this tune but we talked about a million other things. Thanks

@@JasonLoughlinMusic Very interesting. I never knew he occasionally goes with a thumb pick. Thanks for the update.

1951 sounds a little early to me. I believe it was more like 1957 - 58. Great picking anyhow.

Hello Mr. Loughlin, I always wanted to perform some fingerpicking and Travis picking like in this lesson (and Scotty Moore stuff too, rockabilly and classic country songs) but I really can't find exact advice on what to do: grow nails, play with bare fingertips or use fingerpicks. I bought brass 0.225 fingerpicks, I can pretty much easily play double stops but can't play with agility subtle and fast melodies. I am med worker and growing nails is the last options for me. I would appreciate any advice!

For Chet stuff I use a fred kelly thumb pick, for country and rockabilly I just use a flatpick and hybrid picking

Thanks for this Jason! Great lesson as always. How did James achieve his slapback delay? Would that have been in the recording studio only? The echoplex was released in '59 I think, but I am not sure if James used one. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echoplex
