Fun fact: Mandy Patinkin, who played Inigo Montoya, went to a restaurant known to be frequented by mobsters. At the front door was a mountain of a man, one of the bodyguards. The man recognized Mandy, pointed at him, and moved forward threateningly which scared him to death. Then the bodyguard says, "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." And then he smiled. That was the moment where Mandy Patinkin realized just how far reaching The Princess Bride was. Keep having fun.

@Jesús Fernández García Thank you for that. It's frustrating not being able to spell things properly. Worked at a clinic once where Spanish speaking people typed their info out and a program interpreted it into English. Problem they had to use an English keyboard. We figured out that when they told us they had 47 anuses, they were trying to tell us that they were 47 years old.

@@Scott-ec4cs The translator is very funny. It's that in Spanish, as you surely know, n and ñ are letters with different sounds, one sounds like the word "no" and the other maybe like the word "onion" although I am far from being a expert. But I will tell you that it irritates me a lot to see that even in the movies almost nobody spells Zoe Saldaña correctly.

Fun fact. The part where Inigo Montoya says 'I see you are using Bonetti's defence against me' and Wesley answers 'I thought it fitting considering the Rocky terrain' is actually an obscure pun. Inigo is referencing a real sixteenth century fencing master called 'Rocco' Bonetti.

For motivation in the scene, Mandy Patinkin imagined the Six Fingered Man was the cancer that had recently taken his father's life, thus the real emotion behind the line, "I want my father back, you son of a bitch."

I've heard tell that the performance was so powerful, genuine & intense, the actor playing the count was actually frightened that Mandy was going to HURT him IRL! Don't know if that is true or not, but I believe it.

The sword fight between Wesley and Inigo was so well constructed that multiple people have felt the desire to do detailed breakdowns both from stage fight perspectives as well as a historical accuracy perspectives. This is such a classic line that it surprises me when some people are not familiar with it, but here is a true story: My kids grew up with this movie and knew all of the dialogue by heart. Few years ago my son and his wife were flying to Hawaii and my son was wearing a tshirt which had this quotation in full, including" You killed my father, prepare to die", done as a name badge. He was actually stopped by security because it was perceived as a threat! It took a bit of explaining and a Google search to prove that this was quotation from the movie. He wore that tshirt often, but never again in the airport.

The big guy is André the Giant [aka André René Roussimoff], a French farm boy who became a wildly popular wrestling star, especially in Canada, as he lived in Montreal for some time. Towards the end of his wrestling career, he started appearing in TV shows and movies. He was recognizable to most of the people who came to see Princess Bride in the theaters. Everyone thought this was the absolutely perfect role for him -- and he became extremely proud of his performance. Typically, his appearances were one-dimensional stuff just based on his size. In this film, he was one of the stars, and his contribution to the film's success was significant. Sadly, his size was the side-effect of some serious conditions, including acromegaly. He died at the age of 46.

He was the villain in the WWF, so he was happy to do this movie. It helped people see him in a different light. It worked. He is one of the most beloved characters ever. ❤️ And Mandy Patinkin is on TikTok. Well, his son, Gideon, is. He uploads videos of him and his mother all the time. They’re adorable. I highly recommend the behind the scenes stories for this movie. Example #1 The actor who plays Vezzini, Wallace Shawn, is genuinely afraid of heights. So when he was being hauled up a cliff tied to Andre the Giant, between takes Andre would hold him and comfort him. Which did not comfort the man at all! #2 Andre is way too big for riding a horse so they had a rig to hold his weight above the horse. Well he got drunk. Andre was known for drinking beer and wine by the case and he was riding in that rig and singing one night.

Aside from an invisible bit part, this was Robin Wright's first movie. She had to get a leave of absence from the daytime soap she was on at the time in order to make the movie (and then got the time added on to the end of her contract). Cary Elwes (Westley) had only appeared in a couple of movies at that time. The producers have said that they searched a long time for both roles, and really had no second choice for either actor, the requirements of the parts were so specific.

This movie is for everyone boys and girls it is such a great movie. This movie is based on a book. The writer of the book also wrote the script of the movie . The scene with Westley and the six finger man when the six finger man hit him in the head was real and the actor who plays Wesley had to go to the hospital. There was real spark between the main actors in real life Westley and Buttercup that's why it works. Andre the giant used his big hands to protect Robin Wright (Buttercup ) head when she was cold on the set. You should also see Wilow, Lady Hawk, The Never Ending Story and The Labyrinth 1986. This is one of the movies with an epic soundtrack like Conan The Barbarian or Highlander which you should also see. one of my favorite quotes from this movie "“We are men of action, lies do not become us.”"

The sword fight was instructed by the sword master Bob Anderson who had trained with the likes of Errol Flynn and done the choreography for multiple movies, to include The Lord of the Rings films, sword fight stunt double and choreographer for Star Wars films, and was both sword fight choreographer and stunt man for a number of other films both credited and uncrredited. He wasn't only a film choreographer, he also did real-life training for things as distinguished as 6 times for the British Olympic saber team. As others have noted, all the swordsmen mentioned by the two were real in history (though not historically accurately mentioned timeline-wise during the conversation). Took something like 4 months of training for Elwes/Man in Black and 6 months for Patinkin/Inigo where they both had to learn the entirety of their own and the other's part. Listed in many places among the best sword fights in film, to include IMDB as #4.

So, I apologize if this has been commented, but I didn't see it. This is such a great movie, but I think the thing that I appreciate the most is Manny Patinko's performance. He had just lost his father to cancer shortly before this, so whenever he says his "you killed my father" line, he's imagining he's talking to the cancer. That makes his "I want my father back" line so well done because it truly came from his heart.

Part of what makes the film great, is the 'hidden' qualities of how well the story is constructed - - You're not expecting the Man in Black to defeat each of the three guys in their own area of expertise... and yet, he does - You're not expecting Fezzik and Inigo, the two 'lower henchmen' in the kidnapping, to turn out to be good guys... and yet, they are. - You're not expecting Inigo, introduced as just a henchman, to turn out to be one of the most interesting characters. - You're not expecting Miracle Max (played by Billy Crystal in heavy makeup) to almost steal the entire movie... and yet he does. - You're not expecting the story to be a comedy, with witty, snappy, self-aware dialogue... and yet, it is. So, I agree that the film 'doesn't try to do too much.' ...But it's constructed in a way that each part of what IS there, counts for a hell of a lot! Be aware that the story was a novel, before it was a film. The director was wise enough to get William Goldman, the writer of the novel, to do the screenplay, and Goldman was talented enough to do the translation-to-film medium extremely well! (The novel is very enjoyable also! - but it's a slower, more gradual kind of wonderful enjoyment than watching the film.)

The Giant is played by French Wrestler Andre the Giant (that was his stage name in the WWF). He was born in France, son of immigrants (father Bulgarian and Polish mother). He suffered of Gigantism from childhood and at his maximum had a height of 2m 11 (6ft 11) and a weight of 236 kg (520 lb) He was known in the Wrestling community as an extremely sweet man which got him the nickname of 'Gentle Giant' and he sadly passed away in 1993 at the age of 46 of a heart failure. Apart from Wrestling documentaries he appeared in several movies and tv shows during the late 70's and 80's and he has said that his role in the Princess Bride was his favorite.

8:40 "Where is he from?" The legend goes that Edouard Carpentier, French Canadian pro-wrestling champ who used his Olympic gymnastics ability in his wrestling, was vacationing in the south of France and had his way blocked on a country road by a fallen tree he couldn't budge. From nowhere, a literal giant appeared, lifted the tree and cleared the way. Carpentier persuaded André René Roussimoff, then 19, to come to North American as a wrestler. The rest is even more legendary. The above story may or may not have been true -- pro-wrestling is not exactly free from exaggerated publicity stunts.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but Andre the Giant's face is the one used for all that "Obey" clothing and gear that was huge 15-25 or so years ago.

This movie is a masterpiece, iconic and witty. As wonderful as everything in this movie is, the best part about it is watching people who haven't seen it before fall in love with it. I'm so glad you got to experience this movie and that you shared that experience with us.

This is such a phenomenal movie! I'm glad you liked it! My parents and I still quote this movie! Whenever there's a kissing scene in an action movie, my dad says, "I didn't realize this was a kissing movie". Andre the Giant was from France, he died in 1993.

The director Rob Reiner said that Mandy called him everyday and said hello my name is Indigo Montoya you killed my father prepare to die LOL - finally he told - you got the part already stop calling me.- And Mandy says that the character of Indigo M was a very personal for him because he had just lost a father and he could relate.

The biggest surprise about this movie is that when they filmed it, the producers and higher ups were fully expecting the movie to flop. The novel wasn't widely known, and the original script was looked at as plain and unexciting. HOWEVER the actors all enjoyed the concept so much that they pushed themselves to sell the plot and dialogie and made it a true treasure. Best movie of all time IMO

It did kind of flop. Not a big hit at theaters but became really popular when released on video. It's such a great movie and everyone young and old can enjoy it. I hope they never try to redo it or reboot it. It's perfect.

William Goldman who wrote the book and later the screen play for the movie had Andre the Giant in mind when he wrote the character of Fezzik. Fred Savage who played the grandson was in the TV show The Wonder Years. Chris Sarandon was married to Susan Sarandon and he also did the voice of Jack Skellington. Christopher Guest (Count Rogen) was in the movie Spinal Tap and is married to Jaime Lee Curtis. Comedian Billy Crystal played Miracle Max, his wife in the movie was Carol Kane who was part of the cast of the TV show Taxi. Mandy Patinkin has had a varied career with many great roles in the movies and in the TV shows Homeland, Chicago Hope and Criminal Minds but this movie and Yentl are my favorite of the roles he played.

There has been some TikTok talk about instead of a reboot doing a retelling of this story. For instance Fred Savage would loan the book to his coworker whose daughter is sick so we could see the story retold through her eyes and her imagination/perspective. I even saw one TikTok that had the coworker cast as Queen Latifah.

Since you mentioned Inigo, the original novel (which poses as a 'translation of a Florinese classic' and is as much about the fictionalized version of the author and being nostalgic for this book his father read to him as the story made into the movie) has both his and Fezzik's full backstories.
