The neighbour didn’t want to do any harm, he was just sad and scared, that’s what the shadow represents; fear, from the capture cutscenes, we see a story, the neighbour lost his wife, his children, he was too scared of being alone, so he kidnapped other kids, he was too busy avoiding his fears that he never found the strength to face them

Are we playing as his son? I know the boy killed his sister and it shows him throwing someone in the basement. But alot of it seemed to be a dream like act 3. So are we his son and he's having nightmares of trying to escape or are we trying to save his son that he locked in the basement.? I felt like the shadow is his son.

The kid is the main character when he was young. You see him at the very start of the game. Its not the neighbor when he was young.

That isnt a demon . Thats his son . His son has lived all his life in the basement . In the act 1 the person that he was trying to handicap was his son . The shadow thing is the ghost of his son thats died maybe because of not eating anything . The reason why he handicapped his son is that his son has killed her daughter ( the boy killed her sister )

you dont get the meaning behind it.. the shadow means the fear, in the kid's case it's his fear of the neighbor and the things he did to him, and in the neighbor's case it's the fear of never being a father again. so yeah at the end we conquered our fear while the neighbor is still afraid of it

All of this was fake. Act 3 has no meaning, it’s just Nicky overcoming fear. The neighbor being trapped in that house is a symbol to Nicky that he has been trapped by the Guest. The shadow figure is controlling the guest, but we see it literally here. The neighbor is fine, don’t worry!
