3 years late, but as a licensed aircraft mechanic, let me tell you that a single coin could and would easily cause catastrophic damage to a jet engine, whether fully spooled up or just starting. What tends to happen is the fan and compressor blades do chew up the object, but those blades get torn apart and the fragments of both get sucked into the hot section where the fuel ignition happens. So yes, the little old Chinese lady who is tossing coins into the engine should be stopped immediately.

On planecrash corner : I touch the outside of plane too before going aboard. I think it´s less of a superstition and more of psychological thing to me ; to me, it´s reassuring to have felt the metal surface, as if to say "this is solid and wont fall to pieces". In a way, it may be the analytical side of the brain trying to reassure the one producing the emotional side ("oh my god we´re gonna crash")... maybe it creates an illusion of control or proximity to the machine, I dont know...

1:24:47 No the titanic was not found by a private enterprise. The titanic was found after the military hired Robert Ballard to find the sunken nuclear submarines USS Thresher and USS Scorpion. Ballard agreed to the search on the condition that he could use any extra time to locate the titanic. They used the hunt for the titanic as the cover story for looking for the subs. After locating both subs they noticed that they left a large debris trail on the ocean floor 9,800 feet down. This observation allowed them to locate the titanic much faster as they could just look for a large debris trail rather than the much smaller hull of the ship. and now I am wondering if they are using MH370 as a cover-up for something.

I've long felt, much like Grey, that I'll live an exceptionally long life; I've had that notion since early childhood, and at times it's made me sad - nobody wants to outlive people they love or know. It seems very lonely, especially if I'm old & invalid for much of it. It's also not something I really mention to anyone either, so to hear Grey discuss this was really a bit relieving. My fascination with life extension and quality of life improvement in regard to the body, stems from this idea I've long had. I agree that it's a worthwhile area to explore. If we can extend, suspend, or maintain life with science,I believe that the benefits are immense.

I'm very firmly in Team Self-Checkout but the only major issue I have with them is that most supermarkets require you to get a member of staff to 'confirm' your bag before you can even start if it's heavy enough. I tend to carry a backpack with me everywhere, and in there I keep a few essentials (umbrella, Kindle, external battery for my phone, water, etc) so it's always heavy enough to trigger this bag check, but I also don't want to use one of the supermarket's plastic bags because it's 5p each time plus it contributes (in a negligible way) towards ecological problems. I wish more supermarkets would do like Waitrose, where you don't need to have your bag checked, and trust that most customers will be honest, and that the security cameras will take care of the minority of customers that would try to smuggle items into their bags without paying for them.

I think, for 37:05 you have to take into consideration how much of your video they've used, and what content they use in the rest of it. If it's just an entire video of stolen stuff, then that's bad. If they've used the entirety of your video in theirs, then that's bad. If, however, they use 50% or less of a video, and gave credit, and they expand on its content, then it's usually alright.

Hey so, if you're on an airliner and the engine explodes or some other thing happens, do document it however you can. Mostly so that if the airplane goes down with all hands, maybe they can somehow pull the data off your burnt hulk of a phone and get a better idea of what happened. Imagine if we had people on some of the great mysterious plane crashes who took photos of the problem before they smashed into the ground at a few hundred mph?

There is this classic portuguese book, Death with Interruptions by José Saramago which is an analysis to the end of death. It's taken seriously, in a sense that it isn't presented as a magical thing, even though it happens due to surreal circumstances - suddenly and affecting everyone. The author is stingy and salty which gives off a funny vibe to the story. Just a rec. It's biased towards the >wanting to live forever is evil< meme but still enjoyable

One thing you didn't talk about in your "Why Die?" video is telomeres. A telomere is "a region of repetitive nucleotide sequences at each end of a chromosome." Telomeres are significant in aging as every time mitosis(the regular regeneration of tissue or tissue by cellular replication) occurs, the telomeres wear away a little bit, and as you age, the telomeres decrease in size(due to a decreasing amount of the hormone telomerase), leading to what is essentially 'death by old age.' So after all diseases and illnesses are eliminated, this will likely be the last cause of death in humans. Now I don't know too much about it, just that it if the solution was to make more telomerase, it wouldn't be as significant. I also may have made a mistake in my explanation, so please correct me if I have.
@MrTridac7 жыл бұрын
Telomeres are just one of many, many other mechanisms that lead to ageing. It's actually not even the main cause. If you would just increase the number of telomerases you'd get any cancer you can think of. The main reason for ageing is, that it is an intentional process encoded in the DNA. It's not a flaw or error.
@johnn11997 жыл бұрын
There's an enzyme called telomerase that can extend telomeres. It's a problem, but it's nowhere near the biggest one.
@johnn11997 жыл бұрын
MrTridac whatever gives you that idea? The medical consensus is very much that ageing is the accumulation of damage over time.
@danochy55227 жыл бұрын
John N Ok, thanks for the explanation. I thought aging was due to the fact it is disadvantagous evolutionarily to have a longer lifespan as the energy that would go into thatbaould be better used increasing survival chances prior to reproduction.
@danochy55227 жыл бұрын
And therefore there's no need for a natural mechanism to stop aging
