Godzilla Minus One Movie Description:
Japan has barely recovered from the Second World War when a gigantic peril emerges off the coast of Tokyo. Koichi, a deserter traumatised by his first confrontation with Godzilla, sees this as an opportunity to redeem his conduct during the war.
Godzilla Minus One (ゴジラ-1.0マイナスワン, Gojira Mainasu Wan) is a 2023 Japanese epic kaiju film written, directed, and with visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki. Produced by Toho Studios and Robot Communications and distributed by Toho, it is the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise, Toho's 33rd Godzilla film, and the fifth film in the franchise's Reiwa era. The film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Kuranosuke Sasaki. Set in postwar Japan, it follows a former kamikaze pilot suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after encountering a giant monster known as "Godzilla".
Following Shin Godzilla (2016), Toho was unable to produce another live-action Godzilla film until 2020, owing to a contract with Legendary Entertainment. Producer Minami Ichikawa appointed Yamazaki to create the film upon the completion of The Great War of Archimedes (2019). Principal photography was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving Yamazaki three years to write the script, which draws inspiration from previous Godzilla movies and the works of Hayao Miyazaki and Steven Spielberg. In February 2022, Robot Communications publicized that Yamazaki would soon direct an untitled kaiju movie. Filming occurred primarily in Chūbu and Kantō from March to June 2022. Shirogumi's Chōfu studio spent eight months creating the visual effects. The film was revealed to be an installment in the Godzilla series in November 2022, and its title was announced in July 2023.
Godzilla Minus One premiered at the Shinjuku Toho Building on October 18, 2023, and was released in Japan on November 3, to celebrate the franchise's 70th anniversary. Toho International later released it in North America on December 1. The film grossed almost $116 million worldwide on an estimated $10-12 million budget, becoming the third-highest-grossing Japanese film of 2023 and surpassing Shin Godzilla as the most successful Japanese Godzilla film. Critics praised its visual effects, direction, screenplay, characters, musical score, and social commentary, with many hailing it as one of the best films of 2023 and among the greatest in the Godzilla franchise. It also attained numerous accolades, including a leading 12 nominations at the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize (winning eight), three nominations at the 17th Asian Film Awards (winning two), and winning Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards.

The fact that the film's budget was less than $15 mil will always blow my mind. Hollywood has a higher budget and most of its CGI doesn't look anywhere near as good as this.

You might be confusing CGI with practical effects. The practical effects make things seem better but take longer to set up & execute (at least from what I've heard & seem) This is why Pacific Rim still has that amazing look / feel cuz it mixed a lot of practical & cgi effects. (Man I wish they made a sequel)

Tachibana was a mechanic for the Kamikaze Suicide Squad. He had been maintaining the flying coffins of his friends who took off and never returned. Although it is not depicted in the movie, I think he must have been very sad. Shikishima was also a member of the suicide squad, but he did not take off. Shikishima tried to detonate himself with Godzilla as atonement for the war, but Tachibana gave him a way to live. Tachibana was finally able to make arrangements for his friends to survive.

I am Japanese. A film director gave a TV interview about Godzilla's walk on land. He said that he was very worried about it because Godzilla is a creature, but it is a being close to God that is beyond human knowledge, so it would be wrong to make it move like a dinosaur or a lizard. Therefore, it is different from the way we can easily imagine dinosaurs and lizards walk.

This Godzilla is so twisted by the radiation that its not a creature of nature anymore. The strange, stilted way that it walks after the mutation, as if every step outside of the water is painful, as if its own body doesn't fit it anymore, reflects what an abomination it's become. I wouldn't be surprised if the unnatural weight of Goji's body was cracking it's own bones as it moved , and just healing them quickly enough that it doesn't fall.

@@happyteedz4626 that's one of the main conflict about MC. He was a coward, afraid of death, and hiding behind his parent's wish. He was fine skipping his last duty because the war has ended anyway. But after first godzilla attack and meeting Sumiko, he realized that he's just a worthless piece of worm that doesn't deserve to live. Part of him wanted to return so he can die on the battlefield, part of him still scared of death. These are the two ghost that kept haunting him every sleep. After Noriko's death, he felt an anger so great that he lost one of his ghost (being scared of death), but that just made him suicidal. Later though, he also managed to lost his other ghost (wanting to die), not because he was afraid of death, but because of his daughter.

Takashi Yamazaki who was the director, writer, and VFX supervisor for this film was told by Steven Spielberg that not only did he love it, he saw this film in IMAX 3 times. He also confirmed that the black substance crawling up Noriko’s neck in the final shot was in fact Godzilla’s cells, implying that she was able to survive because she had mostly regenerated just like Godzilla. And she likely got those cells because the news voiceover said parts of Godzilla came off him when he was being shot at by the tanks.

I have seen G-1 five times in the theater, the last being Minus Color. Every time Noriko gets blasted in the Ginza attack, it always gets me. By the way, Noriko is not the only one to have survived, as the damaged Godzilla skins falling to those injured were also revived; hence, Noriko was almost fully recovered. On a minor note, the radiated black rain that fell on Shikishima may have contributed to his black eye's fast healing, where the Kid’s arm remained in a sling by the film's end. Finally, Godzilla walked like that because the filmmaker pays tribute to the men in the G-suits as CGI takes over the kaiju role.

The deep sea fish seen at the beginning at the film described how they were going to beat Godzilla. Next level foreshadowing. Interesting. These subtitles are not the ones I had. Those are deep ocean fish, and I assume they decompressed so quickly that their swim bladders came out of their mouths. I think the reason the large Gojira moved the way they did was due to exponential, and possibly asymmetrical growth. At the beginning, the smaller, dinosaur-like Gojira was more fluid and nimble.

the fact that: in the monsterverse movies we don't care much about the humans, but in minus one i didn't wanted any of them to die, it's crazy. I literally loved every single character, even the ones that appeared for like 2 minutes or less.

The key to making an excellent Godzilla film is for the focus to be on the human characters and what they’re going through; not on the monster.

There’s no shame in not being familiar with terms from 80 years ago. If you’d like to know: Kamikazes were pilots whose missions it were to crash their plane into US ships in an act of sacrifice. While they didn’t always carry out their mission if they failed multiple times they were seen as cowards. At the end the MC displayed that he was finally willing to sacrifice himself and thus found redemption in the eyes of the engineer

The director took inspiration for elements of this film from the original 1954 Godzilla with its dark emotional edge and postwar themes, and Godzilla's evil personality, regenerative abilities and, nuke-like atomic breath, as well as his death and the ending cliffhanger are inspired by another one of the best Godzilla films, GMK. You should check out both of them, they are both masterpieces. GMK is cited as this director's favorite of the series. The director also wrote the screenplay and directed the special effects at the same time.

What makes this one of the best godzilla movies is how deeply you care about the humans in the story. Its very rare when the human story is so compelling.

I wasn't expecting Noriko to have survived. If the impact of hitting the ground after that shockwave from the Atomic Breath didn't kill her, the radiation surely would have. It was a very pleasant surprise that she was still alive, don't get me wrong.

Excellent reaction... Man, watching this in the theater back in December it was killin' me tryin' to describe just how good this was to people without spoiling it. My wife is NOT a Godzilla fan. I convinced her the other day to check it out and she was ballin' and couldn't stop talking about how good this was. I was disappointed this was not released in 4D. Can you imagine that? Can you imagine if the budget on any sequel is double that at $30M or so? BTW... skip the English dub. I dunno who did that work, but... I just hope people don't watch that as their 1st time and think this was trash.
