Perhaps consider watching History of the World Part 1 before Robin Hood: Men in Tights, both are worth the watch but HotW will be a bit anticlimactic after RHMiT wise choice giving Prince of Thieves a look before Men in Tights, the latter is very much a response to the former Any thoughts on watching the original Producers? (I personally prefer the newer version, Nathan Lane knocks it out of the park, but if you vibe off the Wilder / Brooks collab energy the original will scratch that itch well) archive.org/details/HistoryOfTheWorldPartI should you need it

I think it may have been praise for Lucas, rather than a dig. Lucas gave 20th Century Fox the lion's share of income from the Star Wars films, in trade for all rights to movie merchandising. Up to that point, no movie merchandising had been done in films, so the studio thought Lucas was an idiot and said, "sure, take all the merchandising rights, we'll take the cash." Lucas then went on to make more money in merchandising than the studio made showing the movies. Studios don't offer that deal anymore.

The reason the effects look so good was because Mel Brooks wanted George Lucas' blessing. George Lucas loved the idea so much he not only gave his blessing but gave him access to his effects studio which was used in the actual Star Wars films. He did speculate however no merchandise in case people mistook Space Balls merch for Star Wars. That's why there is all the merchandising jokes.

"I'm really impressed by the effects in this movie" Funny you say that. Mel Brooks went to George Lucas for permission to make Spaceballs, a parody of Star Wars and Lucas loved the idea, as long as they didn't sell any merch from the film, so he gave them the full resources of Skywalker Ranch including Industrial Light and Magic, Skywalker Sound and the full library of sound effects and assets. The Millennium Falcon even makes an appearance at the end of the film, parked at the diner.

Funny thing in that "I am your father's..." scene: If you break it down, it really just comes out to: "I am your cousin's former roommate." Father's brother is your uncle. Your uncle's nephew is you or your sibling, but either way, the next one is just your cousin! Well, villains do tend to be excessively talky, I guess.

Unless the uncle had two or more siblings, then his nephew could be your cousin. That would make it your cousin's cousin.

When I first saw this in theatres, my older sister was with me. I couldn't read any of the intro crawl because I'd forgotten my glasses at home, so asked her what the last line said. She told me "If you can read this, you don't need glasses." I thought for years she was insulting me, until i saw it again with my friend on video.

My favourite gag is when Dark Helmet is on the desert planet and yelling at the guys to see if they've found anything but then pulls out the megaphone to talk to Colonel Sanders, lol. Super subtle but, man, it cracks me up every single time. Kinda like the propeller sounds for the external shots of the jet in Airplane.
