As someone who grew up in the 1950's, this movie went out of its way capture every nuance they could think of, of how the two eras differed and how people in 1955 would react encountering aspects of 1985 life. This should be used in history classes to bring the past to life (almost literally).

I SO miss the simpler way of life from a more innocent/naive time. We definitely had some serious issues that we addressed over time (racism, etc), thank goodness. What's really freaky to think about is how much things have changed between 1985 and now! My daughter was born in 1980; there are so many differences in everything that many younger reactors simply don't understand in the movie. It's like we live on another planet.

@@treetopjones737 And Jack Benny for Sec. of the Treasury, whose most iconic joke was his telling of having been held up by a mugger. Guy demands Benny's "money or your life." Moment of silence. Guy says "well?" Benny replies "I'm thinking, I'm thinking." (I.e., his whole schtick was how much of a tightwad he was.) From our current viewpoint looking back, most people, if they even heard of Reagan, don't know he was an actor. (The movie has his name on the marquee starring in a western with Barbara Stanwyck.) He was a B movie actor, too. To many people, up until election night in 1980, his chances were deemed a joke.

@@leslieoneal4464 Part of the claims of viewing the past through rose-colored glasses was that in the midst of events, it can be very VERY scary how they may turn out. When you look back, you know most threats come to naught. In the 1950's, atomic warfare was only a matter of time, not if. Commies were under every bed. Beatniks, hippies, pot, and protests were the harbinger of a complete collapse of society. Vietnam starting to flare up represented the tipping point of the domino effect where communism would take over all of Asia. At the same time, some things seem more innocent because we didn't know to look. The idea of child molestation was something far removed, only committed by a stranger in a raincoat (i.e., flasher), never a close relative or trusted professional. Sexual assault on women was thought to only happen to those whose sexy attire made them "ask for it." (The depiction of Biff in the car with Lorraine would be taken much more serious if filmed today, and no way would she, in the improved future, allow this guy around the house doing odd jobs.) Racial injustice was ignored. Aids was just beginning but thought to only affect gay men and people from Haiti, hence during the Reagan years, the FDA ignored it.

It *is* used in film classes as a "perfect movie." Practically nothing is wasted, and there's a ton of callbacks and payoffs later in the movie, it's infinitely rewatchable.

🎶 "That's The Power Of Love!" 🎶 Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Billy Zane. Automobile Enthusiast Fact: Writers Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis actually received a fan letter from John DeLorean after the film's release, thanking them for immortalizing his car. Music Enthusiast Fact: The judge who stands up to say that Marty (Michael J. Fox) is "just too darn loud" is actually Huey Lewis, whose songs "The Power Of Love" and "Back In Time" are featured in this movie. Marty's (Michael J. Fox) guitar is a Ibanez black Roadstar II. Small Connection Fact: When Lorraine follows Marty (Michael J. Fox) back to Doc's house, she and Doc exchange an awkward greeting. This marks the only on-screen dialogue that Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson ever have, though they have appeared together in six movies. Historical Fact: Apparently, Ronald Reagan was amused by Doc Brown's (Christopher Lloyd) disbelief that an actor like him could become President, so much so that he had the projectionist stop and replay the scene. He also seemed to enjoy it so much that he even made a direct reference of the film in his 1986 State of the Union address: "As they said in the film Back To The Future (1985), 'Where we're going, we don't need roads.'"

I saw this in theaters when I was a kid. This film in my opinion, one of the very few perfect films ever made. Entertaining, hugely detailed and filled with little Easter eggs, perfectly cast and there is literally not one second of film that was unneeded. Each moment leads to the next in a way that feels inevitable. And, this is the first part of one of maybe two or three perfect trilogies ever made. Well, technically, they do show a deceased dog. Copernicus is Doc’s dog in 1955, but that was 30 years before 1985, so… This movie also has an anachronistic guitar in it. Marvin Berry lends Marty a Gibson ES-345. So in 1955, Marty is playing a song from 1958, using a model of guitar that also didn’t exist until 1958. Marvin must have had some serious connections (even beyond his cousin Chuck) for a guy who plays high school dance gigs. 😄

This budding reaction channel has promise... because of the aforementioned priority and because this reactor doesn't self-censor. I often find people who self-censor to be "inauthentic." Now then, if the editor would also refrain from censoring colorful language (both of the reactor and especially the art to which she's reacting), this would become a staple reaction channel for moi. The crazy thing is that this movie was almost never made. They tried shopping it around to every Hollywood studio, and each one turned it down. Squeaky-clean Disney outright rejected the script specifically due to the intentionally awkward "mom crushing on her future son" aspect of the plot. Ultimately, Steven Spielberg was the only person who said yes and signed on to produce it, and it ended up being the biggest hit of 1985.

While they set up the possibility of a sequel in the last scene, I don't think they knew they were going to make a sequel until the box-office success of this one.

And it's crazy they were so successful, yet still bought the same exact house in a crowded neighborhood. (and had room for a tennis court in the back yard) That's about the only large plot hole in this movie. Which is pretty impressive considering ALL the nuances they have looping back and forth through time (and movies)

Actually, that last scene in BTTF1 was set up as a sort of ending, just showing that the future would be wild. A sequel hadn't crossed their minds, since the movie had been turned down so many times by other studios (mainly due to the whole part about Marty/Lorraine and the incestuous vibe) and felt they'd be lucky if the movie would even break even. They had a few plot problems to figure out for part 2, like, why would Doc bring Jennifer along? But all things considered, they solved that one pretty nicely. Just a pity, that Claudia Wells couldn't return for the sequels, although Elizabeth Shue did quite well.

@@MatthewTheWanderer - Marty effectively tricked Biff and threw a punch while he was distracted. George was so incensed at Biff's attempt to rape Lorraine (not Elaine... Aaargh!} and his throwing her to the floor when she tried to come to his defense that he overcame Biff's arm-lock and knocked him out with a single punch. The difference is that George took Biff out when Biff had the advantage.

One of the funnest and most involved reactions I have ever watched. Lorain took off his jeans trying to find the inflation tube for the his life vest. The third movie is my favorite. People keep asking "How did Doc and Marty become friends?" I think I know. Follow this theory. (A bit lengthy): > In the original (opening) timeline of 1985, we see that the Brown mansion was burned down (with the exception of the garage 'workshop'), then later sold to developers. > Next to the 'garage-workshop' is a Burger King, built by the developers (these facts are seen in the first few minutes of the film). > Doc probably occasionally eats at the Burger King, for some quick meals. > Marty's brother Dave works there (he's seen in his Burger King uniform when he's "late for work"). > Marty probably visits Dave once in a while, and one time is there, discussing his "loud music" with Dave. > This is overheard by Doc, who is there for a Burger meal, and in the ensuing conversation, Doc tells Marty that he could build him a "Super Speaker" and amplifier. > Doc's interest is the scientific challenge, and Marty's is his 'Rock N Roll' fixation. > This becomes the basic connection between the two.

1. Cranky principal Strickland/James Tolkan also played the ship's squadron leader in "Top Gun". 2. The teacher that tells Marty, "I'm afraid you're just too darn loud" is Huey Lewis himself. (Heart of rock and roll) 3. Eric Stoltz was first cast as Marty, but he didn't play well with others and was fired. Some of his long shots are still in the movie. 4. The flammable material set on fire with the model exercise had to have been put there on purpose. 5. It's always fun to see how people react to the Marty and his mom car scene. 🤣 6. George McFly/Crispin Glover didn't like that the story ended with the family being prosperous. 7. Twin Pines Mall becomes Lone Pine Mall when Marty takes one out when he goes back to 1955. 8. IMVHO part II is the best of the trifecta. 9. If you want a first time/share of an OUTSTANDING movie where Christopher Lloyd plays the heavy you must do "Who Framed Roger Rabbit".

Biff was a common name in the early to mid-20th century. It's derived from the Middle English word “bif,” which means “to strike” or “to hit." Eerily appropriate. One recent Biff is Biff Henderson, the stage manager and frequent comedic participant on David Letterman's various talk shows.

Related to Huey Lewis, I was watching a reaction to The Princess Bride, and the reactor was commenting on the very 80's decor of Fred Savage's bedroom at the start of the movie. And she kind of sneered and said, "Oh, look. There's just this generic poster that just says SPORTS." *facepalm* It's the Huey Lewis album titled Sports.

One of my all-time favorite film trilogies. I was 14 when the first one came out in 1985 and instantly fell in love with it. The friendship between Doc and Marty is amazing. I love the score composed for the film by one of my favorite composers, Alan Silvestri. He composed the scores for all three films. But my favorite thing about the Back To The Future films is the adventure. Even all these years later, the adventure is still amazing and just as awesome as the first time I saw each of these films. I never wanted them to end.
