Many thanks for a very comprehensive look into your Dendrobiums. Epic indeed you have some amazing plants. I grow what I have in my kitchen in the UK and am running out of space fast. Since placinging my Kingianum in full sunshine. Removing one Kieki, shoved down the side, and still growing. I now have what I think are flower spikes forming. It's potted up in terracotta. All thanks for sharing, 😁 fabulous

Very interesting. Hard to find many Aussie Dendrobiums in Northern Canada. I've managed to get a couple Speciosums from local growers and one seedling from Taiwan. The seedling is probably 10 years from flowering lol. The other two have 4-5 canes 6-8" long and maybe an inch thick. No flowers yet and we are just going into winter. Far too cold to grow outdoors here so other than the short summer outdoors they live on a windowsill most of the year. Last winter I put them in a cold room ( approx 55-60"F) with a bright led light and only watered lightly monthly hoping to see spring/summer flowers. I am panning on doing the same this year after this years canes mature a little more. Am I on the right track doing this? I also put my kingianum and delicatum in the same routine. I also have 16 sarcochilus out of flask in April and all doing fine on the windowsill. They are almost impossible to find anywhere except from flask. My plan was to leave them there through winter to grow a little more. They still get a "chill" there from the cold air falling down the window and thats where my Phal's are and they bloom every year reliably. Cheers from 53.54'N and 113.49'W (Edmonton Alberta)

Sounds like perfect conditions! Good luck with them. A slight chill and plenty of light is the key. The Sarcochilus will bloom much sooner for you - year 2 or even 1 if you're lucky!

Hello, I hope you can help me. My question is re Catasetum Tebebrosum. Seems my orchid gave a birth to a baby. What do I do with it then, the baby? Should I separate it from the main plant and plant it separately? I have a photo but don’t know how to have it here
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Ай бұрын
Hmmmm I am NO Catasetum expert! But they will produce one, sometimes two new growths each year as part of the growth cycle. These you wouldn't separate unless you had a much larger plant and wanted to divide it which you'd do when it was dormant. Good luck!

@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Ай бұрын
Interestingly the small one I feature was a piece from a friend and comes from an old house on Mt Macedon. I think if they are protected from the wet and deepest cold AND get enough winter light they will manage. This one survived there but never bloomed I think because it didn't ever get enough winter light.

Hi Matthew, how long should the flowers last on average? Also how often are u watering them?
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Ай бұрын
Flowers can vary but longer than you might expect 4-5-6 weeks. I cover watering in the video. There are no rules - depends on your climate and growing conditions and medium. As I said in the video I would let them dry out after every three or four waterings.

I wish these were more common. We surely don't have all these amazing crosses. Is it true that Australia is not allowed to export any native plant out of the country?
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Ай бұрын
Not just native plants but any plant material. And you can't import anything either. (You can...but it's a specialist and expensive process and so not available to the individual grower. You can however import and export orchid flasks so you could buy a flask of this type and have it shipped anywhere if the seller was up to it.)
@90skid97
@90skid97 Ай бұрын
@@helloplantlovers okay wow. Not that I could ever grow orchids from a flask but that means we can still get the crosses then. Perhaps they will have a moment of popularity some time in the future.

Why can’t you give specific % of substrate 🤔 What is free draining 🤷‍♀️
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers 20 күн бұрын
Because I don't measure it. I use out of the bag orchid mix for this type of orchid. You need to find what works for you in your climate. 'Free draining' means water is not held by the medium ie it is made up of larger irregular pieces that allows water to flow through and out of the pot.
