The most lawful neutral line a cenobite can say. I love it because it's two-sided. It's both gratification to the sadist who doesn't want to waste it, but it's also a waste of the meaning of true suffering on the girl's end because at this point she's only apprehended and not much else. They're both aware it will get much worse than the current situation, so she may as well save the tears for the actual torture.

@@jesusazocar1955 remember in the follow up sequel. The young girl solved the puzzle box and summoned the Cenobites. But before they did anything. Pinhead told them "No. It's not hands that call us. It's desire." Pinhead knew the Doctor used the girl to solve the puzzle to summon them. She was only used as a tool. So by their rules. The Cenobites left her alone. It was the Doctor that wanted to experience their world and pleasure. It's more terrifying when evil has their rules and follow them.

The cenobites were suppose to be neutral initially. Frank wanted to have the box to access to God or the devil and have his desires granted. The odds of meeting the cenobites were like 99.999999999% likely. Yet, he took that chance and surprise, the cenobites showed up and tore his soul apart. In the sequel the cenobites became denizens of hell and their dimension was a part of hell.

I've always preferred this interpretation too, that they truly are explorers of experience first and foremost. The core of the horror isn't that they're blatant demons... it's that _they are angels to others._ It's there again in with the "we have such sights to show you" line. Pinhead is not mocking there, he means it, he thinks she'll grow to love it. Of course it extends to the audience as well, we want to see the sights too, that's why we paid for the ticket.

This is pure horror gold, it's such a simple scene and yet the practical affects, the make up, the acting, make this an iconic scene from one of the best horror films ever. Where the real monsters were the humans. The Cenobites were just a force of nature, a consequence of delving too deep into forbidden pleasures. Neither good nor evil, just an end result. Apparently for this scene Clive Barker kept telling Doug Bradly to do less. Less body movements, less facial expressions. What we get is a perfectly alien being, something beyond our notion of reality. A creature that is ramrod still, emoting only with his voice, features only moving in the most extreme circumstances. Pure genius directing and perfectly done by the actor.

"Kirsty, Kirsty, Kirsty, so *eager* to play....so reluctant to admit it." Remember, it is desire that calls them. Kirsty is the best final girl because she IS into this kind of thing and lives only because Pinhead is amused by her self-deception, knowing she will one day join him. He is looking at his successor, his heiress, his love, his hate, his most beloved enemy, and his most clever ally: the next High Priestess of Hell. He can see that potential in her, the monster hidden behind those big doe eyes and that sweetly innocent face. Inside her is a darkness that is just itching to come out and play. She is the protagonist and he is the antagonist, but she is not the hero and he is not the villain, not in this story.

Apparently the whole fingers in the mouth bit was unscripted too. The actor playing the Chatterer couldn't see anything in his makeup and so was told to just walk forward with his hand out, and his fingers just happened to find their way into Kirsty's mouth and both actors rolled with it. The fact that it was unscripted is even better given that fingers in the mouth is a recurring motif in the film. The podcast Girls, Guts, & Giallo explains it very well!

@@FACF0416 not quite. The books go into more detail. When frank opens the box he smells something that smells like the most fragrance of roses . Then it smells like dead bodies . Then the smell is so overbearing his nose almost burns from the aroma strength. That's the nature of the cenobites. Their perception is that at its peak pleasure and pain are the exact same thing. It's sensory overload. They apply this reasoning to taste , touch , sight , and hearing. Haven't you noticed many of their victims both look like they are having the worst torture done to them imaginable ... yet they also look like they are about to orgasm. Remember dr channards first words after his torture " and to think...I hesitated " . He enjoyed being that way

@@MM-hf6om100%. Pinhead in this movie calls themselves "Explorers of Experience", but I would say they are "Explorers of Sensation" as a more appropriate meaning to their duties. The book does indeed go into the varying levels of sensation of what the brain is capable of experiencing through nerves. The Cenobites just crank it to 10 though and find ways to perfect their art for those willing to search for something beyond what earthly life has to offer.

I actually have a theory about the Lament Congfiguration (The Puzzle Box.) (Keep in mind I have only seen the first three movies and have never read the comics, so please don't judge too harshly) Many people think that the best way to avoid the Cenobites is to simply not solve the Box and then it's a done deal, but I dont think it's that easy. Honestly I think that the Box itself has a sort of sentience, not unlike the Ring from Lord of the Rings. Only the difference here is that the Box is not seeking to return anywhere, but instead seeks to compel those who hold it in their possession to solve it unknowingly. Whether they actually intend to solve the Box, such as the antagonist of the first movie, or accidentally solve it shortly after finding it in their grasp, the first thing that anyone does when the Box is in their hands is rub their thumb in a circle counter clockwise on the circular emblem that we can safely assume is the top of the Box. This is also the final motion of solving it. Edit: I realized shortly after typing this that Frank does NOT do this immediately, perhaps because he had every intention of solving the Box on his own despite knowing what it could contain, the Box itself saw no reason to compel him? There is NO reason for this motion, but they ALL do it and it seems to trigger something in their subconscious that pushes the individual to begin solving the puzzle. With its own automatic movements, solving the puzzle is actually pretty simple as it will mostly to the job on its own, with only a few nudges from the victim that has been caught in its trap. And that is exactly what the Lament Configuration is, more than a gateway to the Leviathan's domain and more than a simple puzzle, it is a Trap for all those unfortunate enough to stumble across it. What good is a trap that is difficult to deploy? That would be like creating a landmine that requires the soldier who steps on it to also sing a perfect rendition of "I Will Be There" from the musical production of the Count of Monte Cristo before it would go off. Again, this is all just theory and for all I know it may have already been written/spoken now.

Hellraiser changed so much.. the first one scared the shit outta me as a kid. Seen it in the Theater with my Dad. Chatterer remains my favorite at least in the first one. They changed how he looked in the second one.

But also introduced the terrifying idea that he's actually a young boy. What kind of messed up life had that kid had to be in possession of the Lament configuration early in life? I always felt that added an extra layer of gruesomemess that this entire time, the Chatterer was just a little boy.

@@walsh9080 You learn later in other medias that Chatterer in life was a homosexual teenager who framed his mother for the murder of his abusive father. He became an orphan and later a prostitute. His backstory is extremely depressing, yeah but as you read you learn he did all of this to himself.

Much like all successful 80s films, the first one is the best. Hellraiser Terminator Predator Rambo Friday the 13th A nightmare on Elm Street Need I go on?
