Vivienne really did her homework making this series. Coming back from mastermind, a lot of research on Christian demonology, and some extensive reading of mythology, I realize all of the demons are very accurately portrayed. Starting with Stolas: the 36th demon in the Ars Goetia, is often portrayed as an owl-like demon with long legs and sometimes more than two eyes. He's a teacher of astronomy and highly knowledgeable with herbs, plants, and precious stones. Even the symbol on his grimoire in this show matches the one recorded in demonology. His powers also line up with those of the mythological Stolas: telekinesis, shapeshifting, possession, flying, etc. His true demon form is a demonic black raven, which he turns into in S1E6 and S2E11. Imps, in European mythology, were small fairy-ish demons who went up to Earth and caused trouble through mischief. Just like what the IMP crew does. Belphegor is the demon most commonly associated with sloth in Abrahamic religions and is the embodiment of Sloth in this show. Asmodeus was one of the kings of demons in the Ars Goetia, and the demon most commonly associated with lust. Satan, Lucifer, and Beelzebub are all the same entity in real religion, but represent separate ones in this show. Mammon is a term referring to an obsession with earthly goods. Leviathan is an entity noted in several biblical books, like Psalms, Job, and Isaiah. The Goetic royalty also lines up pretty well too. Stolas and Vassago are both princes in the Ars Goetia; Stolas's father in HB, Paimon, is another Goetic king in mythology. Andrealphus is a Marquis. Succubi and incubi are female and male (respectively) demons who visit humans (usually in their dreams) to seduce them. This lines up well with the succubus characters in HB like Verosika (who was PERFECTLY cast). Hellhounds were a thing in several different mythologies, most notably Greek and Roman. Usually descried as large, flaming black supernatural dogs, they wreak havoc on humans they run into. Anyway, hope this was illuminating.
