We talk about Helmholtz resonators in kind of an abstract way but I measured the beer bottle I drank out of last night and predicted the sound it would make when I blew over it using the formula:
Resonance = (340,000/(2pi)) * sqrt(AreaOpening/(Volume*Length))
Finding the resonant frequencies of cavities is an important step in Speech Science because the pharynx, mouth, and nasal cavities are all places that can exhibit resonance. While the formula is different for the pharynx (a tube open at one end), the concept is similar.
