Deficits mean interest payments, and since your debt is to your own people, interest payments are basically subsidies for the rich, who then get wealthier and invest in industrializing your country. There is some logic to it and it is a fine balance, but it is extremely idiotic when you are pushing it to the edge, where someone declaring war on you leads to near instant bankruptcy.

Bro built the Maginot line in an age where fortress artillery could not reach far enough to actually function as the Maginot line and where forts became obsolete due to new explosive shells and wondered why his forts didn't do shit.

There is so much wrong with this statement. Explosive shells did not pose a major threat to fortresses of the time, and in fact fort technology kept pace with developments in gunnery very well. The fortresses of Paris were built in the 1830s and held up to the latest in Krupp howitzers in 1870-71. Likewise on the Frontier the reason Metz fell was due to starvation and incompetence rather than gun technology. Belfort and Plevna also show that fortresses could hold up to artillery very easily and the actual threat posed to fortresses was operational failure and an inability to resupply. The reason Swimmy's forts didn't do shit is the same reason Sedan and Metz fell IRL...Moltke was terrifying.
