Help Me Build This Watch - Episode 4 - Hand Selection

Hey Marc, you ever think of having an hour hand made that's round, like the Mercedes, but, instead of the three divisions in the Mercedes, is made to look like your round, Islander logo? And then the hour hand is made just long enough to perfectly cover your logo on the dial as the hour hand passes over the logo. Now THAT would be cool and it would be my preferred hour hand.

When the hands were presented I also felt like this project deserves a specially designed set of hands. Like the case back design contest I could also imagine the same could be done for the hands.

Cool idea. Could make it hollow like the Timex Navi hour hand, only problem is when it covers the logo it will be blocked out by the minute hand unless IT has a rounded out area at the same spot. Hmmm.................

I voted silver Marinemaster! I like the Snowflake but it's so Tudor it almost looks wrong on anything else! Just my opinion.

You know what...a Black Marinemaster second hand actually wouldn't look bad with the silver set (the black second hand would compliment the black second notches in the chapter ring!). Damn, maybe I shoulda voted Silver Marinemaster lol 😂

I voted black marine master. Thinking that with a red seconds hand would look nice. I like the silver mm too, but it becomes too much silver imo, and the black looks good I think while it gives a change in appearance

It's entirely possible that with so many choices for so many parts that you'll end up with a watch that satisfies no one! It's a fun process though.

I agree, but I voted for the silver SKX hands. The MM hands he showed didn't come close to reaching the minute track for some reason. Weird!

@@danspanos When the minute track is on the chapter ring, the minute hand typically doesn’t reach all the way. In fact, on the actual Seiko Marine Master, the minute hand does not reach the minute track. I do agree that it covers more of the hour markers than it does here.

agreed. one reasoning is: it's based on a seiko movement, so hands in the seiko domain is a consistent choice.

Well, I liked the snowflakes but it is deeply related to another brand, and in second place I considered the 'Marinemaster' as the most appropiated. Again, I gotta say, great timing starting this series when I'm about to do my own Islander build. My chapter ring and day disc arrived this morning. That's it for parts.. So far it's only the dial we have in common. I matched my chapter ring and dial but the silver one looks fantastic!

That’s a tough one. As a set, I dig the Snowflake hands. If I could mix and match, it’d be kind of cool to see what a MM Hour hand, SKX Minute hand, and a Snowflake Second hand would would like. Triangles, Rectangles, and Pentagons. (In silver)

Just Voted. Anyway, just for fun, I will say i would like the silver skx hour hand, the orange skx minute hand, and the white skx hand. It would all stay inthe SKX style, but the combination of colors works great on my citizen eco drive divers, and I think it could look great on this watch too.

I voted for the SKX orange hands, but I wish that I could have voted for only the minute hand to be orange, like the ISL-34 & ISL-30. I'm trying to think of an excuse to buy one of those. I like the DLC on the ISL-34, but I wish that you could get a black ratcheting clasp for it. I also wish that they had sapphire bezel inserts, even though I'm sure that the ceramic ones would be plenty good enough for desk diving. No watch is perfect!

look into "your watch, your way" - marc will sell you parts to mod your seiko. You can probably contact them via email as well! if you don't have the tools or skills necessary he can suggest a person who can do the assembly for you.

#12 is the only choice for me. The build so far is unrelentingly white/blue/silver, and any of the white or silver choices just turned my stomach inside out. (or at least my sense of design). Some brilliant color seems the best chance to save this, and orange was better than red. I've never liked Mercedes hands much but the proportions of this LIW set are good on this dial. Orange Mercedes all the way!
