Series 4 Patrol vs 105 in my opinion. Safety - Patrol (a big one) Remote parts availability - 105 Price - Patrol Comfort - patrol LSD - Patrol (untill lockers) Driveline strength - Patrol Aftermarket accessories - 105 Engine reliability - 105 (the ZD is fine) Power - Patrol

I went through 12 4x4 in the last 20 yrs . Mainly Patrol . Now am stuck with GU Patrol TD42 with modified Auto. Best decision ever. No problems with the motor. Easy to modify and work on. Good luck with your next rig. God bless you and your family

I've owned both mate we sold the GU and got a 105 for the extra interior space. The cruiser is more comfortable on long trips but I did find the later model with the 5 speed auto upgrade were better. The patrol has better economy and driveline.

Mate! Firstly 🎉🎉CONGRATULATIONS on the new addition to the family!🎉🎉 As for the patrol/cruiser debate I've literally just been through this decision. I have a hilux and wanted a solid axle vehicle aswell so after a long debate I went for a 2006 Patrol with the TD42TI engine. It is now running 35s twin locked, chopped with a tray and canopy ect ect ect and have upgraded the turbo which meant a complete overhaul of the cooling system, as you mentioned, and everyone else told me the engine will overheat it will die!! yadda yadda yadda blah blah anyway that's what I done. I've had it on few trips now towing a camper trailer and the temperature gauge sits pretty right where it should even under alot of right foot on knarly tracks the engine is rock solid. Done turbo, radiator, intercooller, water pump mods and upgraded all hoses to suit the mods. The only thing that kills these engines is heat if the right cooling system mods are done they are spot on. Price and parts availability was a deciding factor in my choice and again everyone told me get the Toyota. However since having the Patrol parts are easily sorced and cheap to boot! You can't go wrong with either of these vehicles at the end of the day when fully kitted out they will go side by side on the toughest tracks. What swayed my decision to the patrol was price. You do pay for Toyota's cult following and the patrol was cheaper and just as reliable if done right so that's what I went for. Congrats again on the baby news mate it was this Chanel that got me into the 4be scene when I moved to Ozz a few years ago, The Chanel has come a long long way mate, really great to see the decision to leave the classroom behind worked out for ya! Well done, keep up the great content. Looking forward to see what you go for with the new wheels!! Patrol or Cruiser you can't go far wrong and won't be disappointed!!once you have one on a track it's hard to feel anything but excitement👍

Classic Tyler Thompson. Open and transparent, and tells it how it is. Good onya mate. 👍✊ I have an 80 Series Landcruiser and it's a keeper. ♥ But I also think a GU Patrol is definitely the better value for money buy at the moment. You're getting a newer vehicle with less kms, for less money. And for a family car, having better safety features (like airbags etc.) is as important as it's 4WD capabilities. And for a $25k budget, good luck finding an 80 or 100 diesel that has less than 400k kms on the clock, that hasn't been modified already. So, as much as I am a Land Cruiser fan, common sense says, look for a GU Patrol instead. Besides, there are already so many KZbinrs using Landcruisers. If you get a GU Patrol, you'll be unique. It'll be nice seeing a different 4WD used in KZbin for a change. All the best on your search.🤞

Each to their own and all 4wd’s have their pros and cons. Coming from a d22 Nissan navara, the Toyota Prado 150 is a much safer car to transport my family, is more capable off-road and has more accessories available. I also didn’t have to pay for a canopy given it’s a wagon. Everyone has their own opinion but at the moment I’m happy with my choice and I can’t see myself leaving the Toyota family for 4wd’s. I look forward to seeing what you go with 👍

Both are very capable and reliable 4x4's. I have a mate with a 105, and I've got a GU with the TD42. Cruiser is definitely more comfortable and seems to have more room inside, so perhaps the slightly more practical option. I do love my Patrol though and even though it's pretty agricultural (noisy and slow) it's super reliable and I think it speaks volumes that the engine now has over 600,000km and has never been rebuilt. Having said that, if I was in your situation with a growing family I'd be leaning towards a late model GU common rail as you get more safety features as well as a newer & lower kilometre vehicle. Plus there's still plenty of them getting around with little or no modifications. Good luck with the search, and I look forward to seeing more of your adventures in future. 👍

Locked and lifted, it was very capable. See my 4WD videos. Only the cost of petrol was a negative. Go for the 4.2Lt diesel.Yes 3Lt will blow up (early models?).

I'd be going a Patrol with low km and then if you were concerned with the reliability do a 4.2td engine swap. For a replacement for the Navara hold the pennies until the Ineo Grenadier dual cab is released (2023 from memory) and keep that as an option as it shows a lot of promise.

I was also looking at my first 4wd and I was looking at the 2012 Y61 as it had none of the early 3L issues. Like you said the later Common Rail 3.0L diesels are much better. The only thing I found out later in my research is that only the Auto supports 2.5T towing where the Manual supports 3.2T towing. The other big issue is that all the solid axle wagons only support

I agree mate. Keep going like you are, one of my favourite channels on youtube. As far as cruiser vs patrol I would get a 3l series 4 zd30. I currently own a 4.5 pertol 105 and love it but for overall reliability, and value the patrol wins. Patrol has a bigger drive line and more ability to modify the suspension.

2010 Patrol owner here. Look for a 2011 model not 2012, which came with some sort of traction control which makes lifting more troublesome, plus they had a lower factory ride height. If you get an auto it will be easier for your partner to drive, assuming she's like most and isn't crash hot on a manual. Manual dual mass flywheels are a pain too, and expensive. 2011 CRD engine is not a grenade like the 98-2003ish DIs were. Don't touch one of those. Put a Wholesale autos valve body into the auto, gives lockup in low gear downhill. To run 35s you will need diff ratio changes, and maybe reduction gears in the transfer case. Engine wise, get a 3" exhaust and a remap to 19-20psi. If you want ball-tearing grunt, get an Eclipse turbo upgrade and intercooler upgrade - this will have you wondering if the brakes will cope, so put braided lines, slotted rotors and some 700 degree pads. There are countless suspension kits around, many are junk and don't address caster correction. Superior has good stuff with support. Then there's the usual other stuff - dual batteries in parallel for winching, piss off the auto hubs, lockers, alloy roof rack, etc.

Firstly my vote for new rig is the first 4jj1 GU BUILD on youtube. The kit from aeco looks the goods and that way you get your dmax with all the benifits of a patrol. Having said that my 4jj1 GQ build was meant to be finished before my 3 year old was born so from my experience babies and garage time dont really work well. But there is plenty of content that isnt on youtube yet if you arent in a hurry to have the car on the road. Plus you can get the conversion done by someone else which wasnt an option 4 years ago. Secondly i really like your independance and honesty from this channel. And that is only creditable to you. Not saying youtube colabs are bad but it definitely can change the vibe. And lastly on the trips with the 'whole' family i would opt for taking both cars. A 'small' trailer for 6 people camping isnt going to happen. Anyway thats just my 2 cents and what ever you choose to do im sure it will be awesome. Looking forward to the next series.

Don’t get a Dmax whatever you do! I’ve owned one for 4 and a half years and it’s cost me $12,000. Cracked inner guards, aircon broke at 124,000km. Paid myself as Isuzu knocked back warranty. Goodbye savings. Going through VCAT. WHEN something goes wrong and there’s a list, expect to go through NCAT. Insurance assessor says Isuzu and Hyundai a the bottom of the list for customer care.

We had five kids (all grown up now). Had two GU's. I agree with the comment from someone below that the 105 is a bit more comfortable in general - but not when it comes to the rear seats. There's a bit more leg room in the rear two seats of the Patrol because the floor dips down a bit, compared to the 105. As our kids grew we were glad of that.

Another couple options to consider could be a Landrover defender, landcruiser troopy or a 60 series Sahara. All come in a 7 seater option. Obviously a 60 series is a fair bit older but also can be very reliable and bulletproof if you find a well looked after example. Defenders have the advantage of coil springs. Quite a few different engine/driveline options between these three models and all are quite large vehicles which might help with your problem of storage. I'm a little bit biased towards landcruisers just for the ease of maintenance and availability of parts. Can find spares all around Australia and even in stock form the older cruisers are incredibly capable. Would definitely steer towards the inline 6 diesels compared to the vdj V8 motors. The 6s have decades of evidence for the reliability and it's pretty standard to see these vehicles with well over 400,000 KS still running well. Goodluck in your searches, keen to know the final decision!

I’ve owned a 105 so I can’t comment on Patrols. But a good mate has had one. For cost to buy go the Patrol and the solid axle went for longer in the Patrols as in Landcrusier s they stopped in the 105. Both are cheap to basic mods that will take you to 95% of Australia. Enjoy making the decision.

I didn't get to go through the entire video when I first commented. Regarding the CRD Patrol, mine is now 13 years old and has done close to 250,000km without any major issues. The only 'major' issue was a blown exhaust manifold gasket that I replaced in my carport last year (even with three broken studs). Everything else has been simply normal maintenance and replacement such as bearings and seals that wear out if you go off-road. Another benefit of the CRD is that you can substantially boost the performance with a piggy back chip such as from Chip Tuning that I have and do so safely (mine's been in from almost the beginning). Chip Tuning is in Sydney, so they can do a proper tune, or you can try their pre-set tunes. A 3" exhaust also does wonders. Avoid the aftermarket intercoolers that use bar and plate cores, as these are vastly less efficient than the tube and fin standard intercooler. Bar and plate are fine for petrol cars, but not diesels. Also consider the Chip Tuning throttle controller; it absolutely transforms the drivability both on and off-road for the better. How do I know all of this? I've been driving and modifying Patrols since 1980 (and travelling with Landcruiser owners for just as long).

Not that I'm biased or anything... but you can pick up a V8 troopy for that budget at auction. Most of which are 10 seaters that can have a row of 3 removed for equipment. Although if you're 100% sticking to that choice of 2, it's got to be Patrol.

Mate if you can pick up a 2005 TD42 patrol that's your best bet. The 3.0L is fine too as long as you service it it will last forever. The Patrol's are built tough with a strong drive train and easy to work on yourself. Another thing to think about is landcruisers are full time 4wd where as Patrols are part time 4wd. Less stress on parts when driving on road for the patrol. Both very capable 4wds and you would be happy either way. 3-4" lift with 35s unstoppable

My only thought, don't go too old, you'll regret it. IMO an 80 is of the age now you would need to be fairly mechanically minded to keep it going. The beauty of the old rigs though is that they don't break anywhere near as much as newer rigs do & on the rare occasion they do break, you can fix it yourself if you want, often on the side of a track. The new rig, you need a tow & a kid with a laptop as well as A LOT more money to pay for the repairs. Maintenance wise, there's bugger all difference between old & new

One more thing, the simplicity of the 105 with a basic lift pump and fuel injection will always give confidence in the bush. You wont see a common rail engine get home on 3 out of 6 cylinders firing. Its the simplicity that can allow anyone with the most basic of mechanical knowledge to get home. you can identify all engine parts and the room in the engine bay will let you swing a spanner and a cat if so inclined.

When you say you can write it all off on tax, do you mean you’ll be able to claim any expenses as a tax deduction against your income and depreciate the capital investment? As opposed to writing it all off on tax? It seems to be a common misconception that it ends up costing nothing which is absolutely not the case.

I have to say after buying a petrol 80 series a couple of years ago, I’ve been surprised how easy it is to get spares for a 27 yr old vehicle. We bought ours before COVID tax. I could probably sell it for about 4 times the price I paid for it. But I have also spent about the same on restoration works both body and mechanically. That said it wasn’t in that bad of condition either and just needed some tlc. Fundamentals were good. Chassis in good nic and some minor rust in the upper rear door. We repainted the turret, bonnet and had the rear upper door fixed to remove rust. Engine just needed new radiator and hoses and rocker cover seals. New plug and reconditioned injectors and reconditioned MAF and we were away. Then we had to replace front seals and bearings. Next is suspension. For touring the petrol drinks like a fish, but we bought ours for tinkering and for the older kids to learn driving. It’s not a daily driver for us so fuel expense isn’t an issue. Just note with the old rigs they need more servicing to keep them going, but in the same sentence are a lot of fun. Using the 7 seats though, you won’t have room for much inside, especially going camping with family. Two cars or camper trailer is the only way. This is just my experience with an 80 series, our other 4wd being a modern Prado, which is faultless.

@Simon-cx5fc 3 жыл бұрын
I'm a Patrol owner, and probably biased, but each car has its advantages, so it all depends on your requirements. Both have 7 seats, but for room, a 105 has a bit more. That said, with a family in tow, bar work and fuel load, extra room means you're going to need a GVM upgrade. A lot of people rag on the Patrol 3L engine, but like you were told, as I understand it, the common rails are a lot better than the direct injection engines and there are a few mods to add to them to protect them. It would be worth getting onto the ZD Warriors Facebook group or something similar to find out more. But also keep this in mind- the 105 only came out with a non-turbo diesel (Toyota's thumping V8 didn't come out until the 200 which is IFS or the troopy, which is great, but hardly a comfortable family car). I don't know who well the engine can be turbo'd, but many who own a 105 seems to engine-swap them for the 1HD-FTE from the 100 which are increasingly harder to find and cost $$$$$. So as far as engines go, you either need to swap a 105 or do a few mods to the 3L. If the 3L does go bang down the line, engine swapping that (Barra, LS, Cummins, TD42 etc.) could make for a good video or two. The other thing is, the 105's were only produced up to 2007, whereas the Patrol was up to 2016, and therefore has better safety, in-car luxury and entertainment available. If you're looking at a 105-era car, then you could look at a GU TD42 (built up to 06)- you can still find some unmolested without too many ks. Looked after, they'll go for half a million without difficulty, meaning you'd get enough life out of it for your purposes and you wouldn't need to swap the engine (although if you buy one stock, you might need a better intercooler, catch can, extra oil-filter etc.). And even with TD tax and COVID tax, I'm not sure they're as much as a 105 and have a better drive train and an engine that will get you home. Because of space, you'll want to consider what tows well- the ZD3L (CRD) tows ok, the TD42 and 1HD-FTE do really well, but you'll only be towing occasionally. If you're looking for modern safety and comfort, 7 seats, and live axles and is great off-road, can find stock and is not going to kill you on price, a GU Patrol from 2012 is the way to go. The money you'd save right now can always pay for an engine swap if you throw a piston later on and you'd still have better comfort and safety, plus the driveline. Alternatively, for the price of an unswapped, low-ks 105 and aftermarket turbo or a highish ks 105 and engine swap, you could get a newish roller Patrol and put a 4.5L Cummins in it for an off-road/touring weapon that would shit on just about anything and usually starts with 200hp and uses 11l/100km on the highway. You could also look at a Defender: live axles, 7-seater, great off-road, built until 2016/2017, and would make for interesting/unique KZbin content, and have a large loading bay, but they're cramped to drive, not as reliable, and parts aren't quite as available. Not sure on price.

Hey Tyler, I used to own an 80 but now have a 3L Patrol. IMHO the driveline in the patrol is way stronger and far more comfortable. Mods and spares for both are easy to find. If I were you I'd go out and drive both and find which one suits you best.

Great topic Tyler & it will be great to see this journey your starting play out. My best answer & briefly why. Patrol all the way, as later model as you can get. Unbelievably capable even from standard. The best drivetrain hands down. A great family vehicle and it won’t break doing the tough tracks,so this makes it very safe for touring with great piece of mind. The late model 3 litre engines are reliable but not fast, but I think it’s fast enough for me and my precious cargo, especially in the bush. I have a lot of Patrols & Cruisers in the 4wd group I wheel with & I have heard this call over the radio too many times. “ That didn’t sound good, I think I’ve broken something, maybe a front axle again! Guess which vehicle that came from Patrol or a cruiser? 😉 best wishes Tyler 👍🏻

Hey mate, just food for thought (and I feel weird writing this because I am a cruiser man) but I think for what you do you would be better with the patrol, and here is why. Patrols have a better driveline and a host of aftermarket accessories- everything from sway bar disconnects to portal axles exist for patrols. You do tough tracks and plan on towing a trailer- you will benefit from that. You cannot legally run 35s on a cruiser. You are allowed to increase your tyre size by 50mm or 7% of your rolling diameter. There is no way of legally putting 35s on a cruiser in NSW. Nowhere in the history of the chassis was there ever a 33inch tyre placarded on a cruiser but a patrol had it in a split rim on their poverty pack which means it can be done legally. The common rail motor is fine. It will run rings around a 1HZ (unless you heavily modify the 1HZ) and will use less fuel. It isn't a big motor for the size vehicle but I can tell you from experience having bin overtaken in my old 1HZ many times by my brothers patrol, they go good. Obviously, you need to find one with a good service history as they need to be kept healthy otherwise it'll tank on you but the engine is fine. Also if it gives out the LS conversion is very straightforward. I will never buy a patrol but you should haha either way mate, I'll still be watching your vids. It's cool to see someone who isn't racing to camp to "crack a frothy" like their life depended on it. cheers

We used to have a 100 series with the 1HD-FTE, toyota's best ever engine. It was an awesome vehicle. But, being IFS, we missed having the solid front axle. I reckon, if you could find a 105 series with that engine, that would be the best combination. But, you'd pay an arm and a leg atm. Where to go next? Come to WA when the borders open up.

Hi mate, I think you have nailed most of the pro's and con's of Landcruiser v Patrol and is a flip of a coin as to which is best, but the one issue that stands out above all is that you want a car to fit 6-7 passengers/family plus all your camping gear, so no matter which one you go with I think you will need a trailer, so at the end of the day I would keep your options open and just go with the one you can find that's in in your budget. by all means show us your mods like you did with the Nav but there are so many vids out there showing full builds they become boring blah blah blah. Re trip locations - as you've already mentioned - thinking coastal strip south from Nowra to Eden picking up Yalwal, through back of Batemans Bay then Deua and Wadbilliga, then you have the option (time permitting) of cutting northwest across the top of Kosciusko to Brindabella and home or go south Kosciusko and into VHC. Good luck with the new truck and keep up the good content mate, 4k or not they're really good. 👍👍

Mate, the main benefit of 4K Res is it helps showcase your stylish beard a lot🤗(Appreciate the extra effort of filming and processing the footage). As a newish person to 4WD and camping stuff, I watched a lot of similar channels. I'd like to say I enjoyed your video very thoroughly. Comparing with others, I'd say yours are rich in content and details from all different helpful aspects to get people on board to this field so that they can enjoy the happiness from 4WD and camping. More importantly, your video is not going in the direction of product marketing, which I do see a lot other people do and is the reason I don't quite like them. A reasonable amount of product marketing content is understandable but the amount is very subtle and can potentially alter the theme of the channel. I'm sure being independent as you described in the video will give you the ultimate control of this. Last but not least, whatever your style is, it's impossible to please every person. Just keep being yourself so that whoever loves your style can continue enjoy the value you create!

Hey Mate new to the channel and enjoying your work. I have had a 105 for 13yrs never let me down, have done all the tracks up in FNQ and only had to use the winch to help others. Yes its a slug if not turbo not fitted (just keep the boost within reason), towed floats, loaded it to the rafters and most importantly really enjoy driving it everyday. It brings me joy!! I will never part with it and wonder if it could be eventually made EV. On the other hand a mate had a GU and it was unstoppable diff lockers made the difference I reckon.

Hey Tyler, my 2c worth. I have owned both a Patrol and a Cruiser and I love them both... I'd go for the Landcruiser 105, solid axel, very roomy and a 7 seater, I just had my 105 modded by TJM in Alice Springs and EVERYTHING was still available for them, I asked about a bull bar and was told that they have 20 available in their Brisbane warehouse ! Lots of company's make accessories for them, TJM, ARB, Cruiser Company, KAON etc. I paid $20.000 for a stock grandpa spec with 200,000kls on the clock. If you are serious on the Patrol 3lts, speak to Tim Bates! Good luck with whatever you go with. BTW I bought my Cruiser from a dealer in Castle Hill in Sydney. (Mine is the petrol version tho).

Hey TT, Whilst not total fanatic, but growing up on farms we had various cruisers. I did start with an 88 pathfinder way back in 1993 that served me well all around Australia in the early-mid 90's, since it has been back to Toyotas for me. A couple of thoughts. If you want to diversify your channel to more viewers, then a Toyota is the obvious choice to further expand the channel's audience base. Sure a cruiser of any type might cost a bit more for similar age/kms to the patrol, both can be super reliable, capable, safe and fun vehicles. As you said, you've now experienced the benefits or peace of mind with part/breakdowns/mechanical availability of both and cruisers in particular further from home is a of importance. Plus the cool/practical aftermarket gear that so many come up with (including including 70 series in particular) Not that this seems to be in your current budget constraints, but a 76 would be great to see and very opposite to your Nav set up. There's only a handful on KZbin doing your type of content (Shad and maybe a couple others). Obviously your call and it will be interesting watch regardless.

Great Video! Personally I’d be going for a series 4 GU patrol. If you are buying a 105 (with solid axel) you can only get 1fz petrol or 1hz diesel, not that they are bad engines but they are definitely dated and on the slower side. Even if you do put a turbo on a 1hz to get a bit more, you have to consider that cost vs just giving the 3.0l a tune. I have 2008 common rail, it is tuned with a 3inch exhaust and larger intercooler, runs reliably and with plenty of torque off road, but if you are towing a large van it will be working very hard, a gear trailer would be fine though. Not to mention the series 4 patrol interior because it is newer is a bit nicer, or easier to find in better condition.

Nothing wrong with zd30 patrol. I have owned multiple zd30 powered patrols & never had any issues with the motor blowing up. This “urban myth” can be attributed to clogged intakes as a result of exhaust gas recirculation. Most modern diesel engines suffer the same problem. Fit a quality catch can and change your oil regularly you shouldn’t have any issues. My current rig is a series 4 patrol running a Direct Injection ZD30 and it’s a beast

Good clip mate, I release in 4K but for no real reason. I had a 4.2 GU and loved it but older ones get hot towing (mine did) never when not towing. 1hz land cruisers I've also owned, reliable but slow. Nissan certainly better value and strong. I'd lean to Toyota but you pay for it as you know. In the end either would be good. I still worry about 3 litre patrols (even common rails) but that's the risks with all cars. I don't personally care what day you release videos as Ill watch them anyway. Keep up the great work. Cheers Steve. PS I still wanna do that interview with you one day if we can swing it?

No issues with a zd30crd, owned from 100k now has 240k . Never done any engine repairs, never blown anything mechanical still runs the factory clutch. Suggestions if purchased, catch can, cheap solid alloy cooler, 3inch straight through exhaust with cat, boost referenced actuator set at 17 to 18psi, ebay old reader to clear faults, egt gauge and boost gauge, and lokka . Will take u anywhere and reliable. 33s is max without tune, I never tuned the car and im happy a it slow but I can live with it. Keep it without a tune and on 33s ull never blow a cv or uni.

I would consider only two criteria. 1) KZbin is your income. If u buy the more popular Landcruiser you will have a bigger audience and therefore more money. 2) Safety. You are transporting your family. And old 105 is not optimal from a safety aspect. Check out Fire to Fork reason for changing from 80 to Prado

Looks like exciting times ahead Tyler. New project 4WD and a new baby. 👍 As for new areas to visit, why not try the Watagans NP and Yengo NP at the Central Coast? I can't remember you having done them. And maybe even sneak an overnight camp at Blacksmiths Beach which has been a long time since you've been. And as for your new project 4WD, GU Patrols is so much better value for money right now compared to the LC80/LC100. I have an LC80 and I love it to bits, but right now you won't find a decent diesel LC80/LC100 that is grandpa spec for your budget. And those nearing your budget are either already modified, and/or heavily used for 4WDing (its a 4WD after all), and all will have around 400,000 kms on them. Smart money says Patrol. But if you get a Landcruiser, one thing you can almost be guaranteed on, you will get more views from non-subscribers (if your videos are tagged/titled "Landcruiser"). So question is, is the extra money asked for an older and more used Landcruiser worth it, to get move views? Might be worth considering. Which ever you get, looking forward to the build series.

Mate. Ive got and had a fully built 4.2 gu patrol for the last 8 years. 100% buy a 4.8 petty GU. Yes you will use a bit of fuel but that's all you will have to do to it engine wise. If I had my time again I would definitely buy a 48. Heaps of power. Don't get hot, blow up, crack pistons and cranks or anything else 4.2s and 3.0s do. I'm not bias either. A 1hd or 1fz cruiser wouldn't be a bad choice either. But if you want something a bit newer 48 Gu is the only decent option. S1-4 gu run the di 3.0 motor. 2000-2006 common rail onwards
