Today we bring out the help on the homestead. With 3 five gallon buckets of peas to shell, I didn't want to shell them by hand, so we brought out the pea sheller. This sheller made by Taylor Manufacturing is at least 15 years old. To order a sheller click the link below.

In the late 50s-early sixties I'd sit with my grandparents and aunts and shell bushels of purple hull and crowders under a big old Sycamore in Timpson, Texas. Man would I have liked to had a Sheller!

I would have loved having the sheller growing up. My siblings and I were the shellers at home and at my grandma's house. My grandma shelled along with us. She was the fastest one even in her eighties.

Aunt Wanda, since you're going to can these why do you have to take the kinda smooshed ones out? Yippee .. I got to pick the first 4 green beans of the year for my supper tonight - this will be plenty cuz I grow "yard long" green beans (AKA: Asparagus Beans) and was so happy .. first ones off the vines - one was as long as my arm (3 ft) & the other 3 to my elbow (2 ft). Oh, I almost got to pick a fig this year too, then a bird found it ..made the fig tree so mad it didn't make any more! Maybe more next year I hope. Doves made a salad out of my white Jerusalem Artichokes but were to picky to eat the red "J chokes" thankfully .. kind of a sad food forest I know, but they'll be good sautéed with flat leaf parsley, onion in coconut oil! Beats eating prickly pear "Tuna's" all the time .. have to eat to many of those alone for a meal & the thorns aren't funny! I'll have to take a picture of my """Cherokee Tan **Mesquite Tree** Pumpkins""" that I got from you ..LOL my walkway is only 4ft wide outside so I had to do something with 'em or we couldn't get around! Some vines are 10 & 15 feet long! The Cherokee Tan Pumpkins seem to like it here in NM so far .. lots of blooms but not showing signs of setting fruit yet - maybe I'm just in a hurry to see if they're a keeper in this hot, dry area! Bet I'll keep growing them even if they don't make even 1 pumpkin cuz the shade from the leaves {some as big as a dinner plate!} is worth GOLD too! I grow most of my garden in a 16'x20 "Ramada" … en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramada_(shelter) .. :-) .. covered with shade cloth on the top, south, north, east and specially the west, even then I loose stuff to the heat & sun. Just like Uncle Danny said on Porch Time - we're going to have to learn to adapt to the changing weather patterns or starve! When SeedsNow.com had a 40% off sale I bought almost $30.00 worth of "sampler packs" - most are regularly 99 cents but with the sale I could get anything that said it did/might do good in heat and didn't take lots of water - some things I have no idea what it is, but hey, if it grows & tastes good I really don't care LOL! Best news of late is ** we finally got some REAL rain ** .. hadn't had a good rain since December so I've had to water the raised beds and large pots every 2/3 days … for some reason plants (besides mesquites, yucca, tumble weeds and cactus) need a little more than a couple of "10 inchers" a year - ahh, yep, that means 10 inches between drops for 10 minutes .. then it stops! I do try to grow some things under and around mesquite bushes (that are trimmed up like trees) but even those are doing poorly this year - mesquites hardly have any leaves! Lots of Hugs, Love and Blessings to all! (Yes Hank, you're included now that you are part of Deep South Homestead!)

I didn't take out all the mashed peas. Just mainly the stuff that floats. The mashed peas eat just fine. Good luck with the pumpkins.

The Pink Eyed, Purple Hulled, Red Ripper Cow Pea Bean People Eater!! Yayness to the Max. Are those Peas like Green Peas that you have to shell & cook immediately or the Sugars start turning to starch? I bet your girls (the Goats) would love some of those Pea Husks too.

Debra Haynes What would you eat that with Debra & how would you do it? Boil the pods and add sugar? I've had Pea Pod Wine, made the old 'Country Wine' way in a bucket with fresh yeast added it was big standard English Garden Peas with the green pods though. The wine as a wine wasn't that great but as a Vermouth with Ice & Lemon was fabulous, so we called it "Pea Pod Vermouth move over Noilly Prat". Lol.

Wanda, can you shell beans with the pea sheller? Are the rollers adjustable? Thanks!

The rollers are adjustable. I know people who do shell beans, but it seems to mash more beans. Not worth it for me.

No the red ripper taste like boiled peanuts and the pink eye just has a taste milder than blackeye peas.

How long do you process the fresh peas?
@CrazyDazes

40 minutes at 10 lbs of pressure. That is for Mississippi. Not sure where you live. Check pressure for your area.
