Wow! You guys are spot on with the ready position. Forget about the old school "centering the racket". In this position you only have a split second to decide forehand or backhand and by the time you decide the ball is on top of you. Positioning your racket in a slightly backhand volley position makes it easier to simply block the ball out in front or slice the racket across your body. Another important choice is where to stand relative to the net. If I am being playing doubles I usually stand at the service line. This allows me more time to volley a hard hit ball as well as to better defend a possible lob. On occasion I may encounter an opponent who nails the ball directly at me with such pace that I then position myself all the way back to the baseline. Bottom line: If you are being attacked, adjust your position on the court so that you can neutralize the attacker.

Thanks a lot guys. Recently, I began to suspect that the "orthodox" way to hold the racquet in the volley position (e.g., in the middle of the body and up high) was incorrect and thus I searched for an answer and your video came up. I think this video paired with your "How To ANTICIPATE Where Your Opponent Is Hitting The Ball" is a great combination to improve volley play.

geat advise. I have a tendency to try to hit with forehand and as a result lack control, body movement is poor and often lose the point. will keep this in mind tonight when at the net.

in the example, an "incorrect " volley was made from initially throwed relativ high ball, and by "correct" volleys - low🤷♀️

Great video guys - thank you so much! I’m a 3.5 level (I think) and play a lot of doubles. I’m fine poaching at the net when my partner is serving to the deuce side but I’m hopeless at running across to poach with my backhand volley. Is this a common issue? Thanks Rob - UK

Hi Richard, it's a very common problem as players often have weaker backhand volleys and are therefore hesitant to poach off their non-dominant side. Your movement is the key to successful poaching. Checkout the vid linked for some helpful tips on your movement at net. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lV7NpXtpgcSqa9E

Be a wall with "cracks" and random your volleys make them think your buliding habits then switch on them and hit towards their bodies. But dont forget on your feet

Your best video, thank you. Great to hear solid advice for doubles players. I think Scott's taken one too many tennis balls to the head, which might explain his poor memory 🤔

When I’m being attacked at the net in doubles I defend with my backhand volley then I return the favor. If my partner is being attacked I protect him by hitting better shots and I attack the opponents.

I know this is going to sound sexist (don't care), but especially for women, and even more so for high school girls... GET ASSERTIVE, don't be afraid of being hit and be aggressive, fight that incoming missile. I see some really solid 4+UTR's that have strong net play but fall apart when a ball is hit at them. If they incorporate the points here and work on getting tougher, that will translate into more confidence which translates into more point wins. We intentionally run drills of hitting at them. I don't mean trying to kill them with 110 mph rockets, but very much aim at; feet, midsection, head.
