Help! This vocal arrangement is too high!

Stop putting Willie out of his vocal range! lol. On another note if you need to change the key to better fit your singers give your band some advanced notice. Not everyone is able to transpose on the spot like that, especially when the songs are busy musically.

First thing we did when I was growing up was drop the song by a third from what the hymnal said. Most of my church had long past puberty, so nobody was going to hit those notes in a way that was pleasing to the Lord.

Kevon, you just delivered an entire WORD, my brother!!! I've been rearranging songs for years for church choirs and workshop or community choirs and felt absolutely NO guilt about it. It especially works for songs that START in the rafters and then have the nerve to do six or seven modulations in the vamp!!! I didn't need singers collapsing on me! 🎵🎵🎵

Yessir! 👏🏾 This is needed. I would also suggest that if the song is outside of the comfort of all of the singers that they make it simple and don’t perform the song at all. It’s also ok to arrange or water down the song to make it fit the capabilities of the singers and musicians.

Exactly! As a musician and choir director I make sure that I fit my choir appropriately. It's OKAY TO DO THAT! It actually challenges you and makes you better at doing parts. You can change the arrangement, change the key. You are not the people who are singing it. Yes! You are right, my band will get mad, but the mindset is that we all want to give our best for the Lord and sound good, lol. Trust me it works.

Thank you.., when I see my choir struggling.., I will change a key right in rehearsal. Key changes can be tough because some songs don’t have the same feel in another key.., in which case you should change the octave in the same key. It really depends on my lead vocalist.., sometimes the recorded key is to high and I bring them down. But you always have that group that can’t hit the notes still complaining that.., “the song is not like that on the record!!”

Yea it always ends up sounding a mess and that person ends up being frustrated or discouraged. I've seen this 1st hand on too many occasions. Just cause it sounds great on the album doesn't mean it fits your local group or choir.

In my defense, although I don’t force a key on my praise team (but I will stretch them) I do have an urge to do so. I come from a background where the church I grew up at song the songs wrong most of the time because of laziness and or lack of practice. What I tell my band and praise team is that we’ll sing the song right first and then we can rearrange it. It may not necessarily be in the same ( I try to keep it there if at all possible but no biggie if it’s too high or low) but the song will stay in the right arrangement

I think I can agree with not allowing slack singers to stay in their confort zone forever and never grow or improve. Hopefully you have a vocal training system that helps them to improve over time. I do think though that sometimes gospel music requires a lot of Belting and is written to have really high harmonies. The are many baritones struggling to sing high parts to accommodate the ladies (I am one of them).

This is good. However, there also comes a time when it's better to just not do that song! Every song is not for everybody! Some songs truly are best delivered in the original form and key, thus probably shouldn't be messed with. And when done so, one needs to be strategic about it. For example Total Praise in the key of A , which would out WILLIE on a E during the chorus, just sounds wrong lol. So I echo this video. But I also encourage strategy when picking songs and when changing songs. Even moreso, I believe strongly in writing your own songs! I encourage all of you minstrels to write for your congregation, choirs, and praise teams. God will be pleased with your authentic praise.

This is why I love Chicago Mass Choir Luther Barnes and the red Budd gospel choir Mississippi Mass Choir Georgia mass choir Los Angeles mass choir and so many other great great choirs of the 90s and 80s and up-to-date there’s so many more that I’m not going to name because they are lots a lot of the songs no offense to Ricky Dillard James Hall at all the other types of choirs that people try to mimic those songs are incredibly way too high and a lot of these other choirs that I just mentioned they are written in a key that the average sopranos altos antennas and baritone maybe bass Can sing just about 90% of Luther Barnes and Redd budd gospel choir There’s no need to even change the key it’s already in a very very comfortable key. And I think God for his ministry’s music is so underrated and a lot of people don’t sing enough of his music except for maybe three songs I know just about all of their music and they have wonderful great songs for choirs praise teams and quartets and men’s choirs I would recommend also just staying out of all of those choirs that do heavy Vibrato’s. There are songs like Ricky Dillard in new generation they do have some songs that are fairly easy especially his first few albums I am a fan of the music but a lot of the songs are very complicated

True our director has us working on an older Ricky Dillard song now... it modulates 10 times. This song is gonna be a challenge for most of the group but not in a good way. If there was a key change it would help out tremendously. Signing full voice and screaming your note is 2 different things. This song will definitely be more towards screaming. Smh
