I'm a Beatles kid...we actually screamed in the theater at "A Hard Day's Night". It was contagious. The screaming died down for the release of HELP! I can't describe what it was like to see them on the big screen during that time. You had to be there, and I'm glad I was.

ME TOO! I LOVE "HELP!" I think it is hilarious and I LOVE seeing them sing their songs, and it fits their Liverpool humor, I TOTALLY disagree with these guys. We used to go to the theater in 1965 and sit all day all the way to the last showing of the day, watching it over and over again. I own the DVD, and this movie NEVER GETS OLD for me. I LOVE IT!!.

It was the discussion of "Head" in this episode that just got me into the Monkees (for the first time, surprisingly). I'm actually glad I watched that first, because somehow for me, seeing the "ending" (well, the start of the demise) of the group's hold on popular culture was interesting, and as an artist, I sort of got the point of it--they're forced into all these stupid fucking scenarios when what they want to do is just play music and live their lives. At least, that's what I got from it. But now I'm binging the original show and picking up some of the songs on guitar/vocals, so thanks, Matt and Craig! I was surprised by how much I enjoyed "Head" and I'm glad I have something to watch.

It's important to realise that in the same way The Beatles changed music, Monty Python changed comedy. Unlike comedy acts before them, the joke wasn't about what was actually happening but the extreme lengths Python would go to, to get a laugh. Situations were so absurd that it was hard not to burst out laughing. I could pan out a whole article about the appeal of Python but it's hard to fit it all into one comment. If you dislike them, that's fine. But they hold an important place in comedy.

I'm pretty sure Bakshi didn't work on "Heavy Metal" but it was a collection of other animation studios in his style. I think he was working on "American Pop" and "Fire and Ice" at the time (similar to the Den portion of HM). A lot of people also thought "Rock and Rule" with Blondie was Bakshi, but again, merely inspired (and also very good).

I can't get over your lukewarm responses to 2001. The special effects in the movie remain fresh, and really make cgi seem cartoonish. The music is also very moving and atmospheric, especially whenever the monolith shows up. Not even a question that its kubrick's finest work, and one of the top movies that will ever be seen by eyes.

I second the previously-mentioned request for Plague Dogs. It's a great movie but Ttere are two things specifically that place it high in my pantheon of animated films: The fact that the animals can speak but are not humanized or heavily anthropomorphized, and the ending, which is bittersweet and absolutely perfect. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the film.

Hey Matt & Craig - love the show. If you've not already SEEN IT, you should watch Ikiru, absolutely one of Kurosawa's best - and most moving - films. There aren't any samurai but there is Takashi Shimura on a swing and it's all the more devastating for it. Alternatively, how's about Dead Man's Shoes? Not sure how well known it is in the US but it garnered a big following in the UK once it got to DVD. Directed by Shane Meadows it features a tour de force in creepiness from Paddy Considine.

Being a fan of Kurosawa's samurai films, I'm really curious to know if you've seen 'Kagemusha' (the film that almost wasn't).
