Trying to make your bird as independent as possible is the key! But that goes against human nature. We loved to feel needed as humans and a lot of people “baby” their birds in many different ways. The bird isn’t gonna go insane if you’re not with them every waking hour! I love the foraging! SO important!!
@flocklife3 жыл бұрын
Totally! And I fell victim to that when I first got bogie. I think I was extra guilty because his wings were clipped and I didn’t have a companion for him so I felt like I had to be his everything which can cause major long-term issues and behavioral problems. Now I know he can thrive being an independent bird with lots of foraging and fun in his cage. And now I can have a normal life as well LOL

Some good advice here. Punishing and screaming back is not a good solution! Managing hormones, providing fun, finding other reasons is the best!

When you leave the room, you have to tell them where your going. I tell my bird I'm going to the bathroom, or down the basement, or upstairs, or going outside. He panic calls if i dont non stop. But is fine if I do that. It only takes a second. Then he knows where I'm at. And he's fine and no screaming.
@mad-scientist6027 Жыл бұрын
I feel so bad when ignoring his screams, because it's my fault he's so bored in there. He just has very basic toys from a local pet shop, I didn't realize just how important chewing was to them. He also may be used to getting what he wants by screaming where he came from. I'm gonna bookmark this video.

I do that too, it saves so much money recycling bits of toys! :) Such a great, informative video. It reminded me Cheeky is finding none of her cages reinforcing all of the sudden. She only goes in if her foraging wheel is full, and/or there's a dish with an offering of treats. 🤦♀️ So, bribery is what I've stooped to since other toys aren't good enough.

My goffins cockatoo screams constantly. He gets plenty of sleep (17 hours), has tons of toys, lots of outside time, puzzles, bottles to toss around and multiple enclosures to explore. We are at a complete loss. We even bought some parrot calming supplements. Zero effect. I have to go outside just to answer the phone. It’s causing some real problems. He is about 8 years old and this behavior started up last fall. He used to have quite the vocabulary, but now it’s just “nighty night” and screaming.

My Blue Headed Pionus, Ares, is the laziest bird on Earth. I've tried all of the foraging toy techniques and if he can't get the treat in one peck he's done with it. He really doesn't like toys because it means moving around to play with them. The only thing he really likes is live plants, so I'm trying out a new strategy of having safe vines grow through the bars of the cage for him to chomp. I have passionfruit vines and grape vines (orgainically grown) growing, but they're still a little small to let him go to town on them. Hopefully it works to keep him entertained once they're big enough.

Yeah I have heard that about cockatoos screaming at dawn and dusk as well. 😅😂 isn’t it LOVELY? Bogie does it more in the morning. He likes to fly around and scream which I think is cute and would never try to train him out of that. I also like how you noticed a big difference between the contact calling and inappropriate use of screaming.. these birds are definitely smart enough to know the difference and yet they abuse their power all the time LOL

Also keep noise level in mind with what point in your life you're at for getting a bird like a cockatoo. I got mine at 14, and now I've made my life infinitely harder for when I go off to vet school and need roommates. If noise level has created resentment with my own family, it will rip friends or roommates apart. Just another thing to keep in mind if you've fallen in love with the idea of a 'too. :)
@birdbrain35943 жыл бұрын
For anyone thinking of getting a cockatoo: almost nothing can prepare you and your family/roommates for the noise level. That being said, try listening to the birds @ mytoos.com... My family of 4 live in a detached, 2 story home with a finished basement. Cheeky has 3 cages, 2 large, 1 in the basement and one in the 2nd floor family room, then a travel/ sleeper cage in the bathroom. Cheeky's noise level is unbearable at times, we can't escape it. Cheeky screams bloody murder if you're in the basement during "her" quiet time. We are now moving to a house where we are building a soundproof room, which hopefully makes Cheeky more content. (She hated human noises, either give her 1 on 1 time or let her be psycho in her cage). I'd say noise level is one of the top 3 worst aspects of owning a cockatoo, and I own one of the smaller species!

My cockatiel screams every time she hears me or my husband come home. She knows the sound of the garage and/or entry door and screams so loud until we get close to her (she’s in the living room) Lately I’ve been started waiting down the stairs until she’s quiet but every step or little noise I do makes her scream again for a few minutes. After about 10 minutes of waiting for her to calm down and slowly walking in she finally stops and I tell her “good girl”. Do you have any recommendations of how to reduce her screaming when I am trying to come home?

How do you feel about covering the parrots cage with a blanket while he’s screaming and when he stops he gets uncovered? Someone told me to try that with my cockatoo but I’m not sure it’s working
@flocklife2 жыл бұрын
It’s tricky because blankets can cause nesty behavior but I cover bogies cage at night just cause we live in a 1 bedroom and so we are all in one space at night. The blanket is a signal that it’s bedtime! If we had a separate bedroom for bogie I wouldn’t use a blanket!

Hey! Just wondering, are the planet pleasures toys free shipping? Thinking of getting some for my budgies! Using the code of course! ❤️💕
@labibar84543 жыл бұрын
I have found out that the shipping is not free for where I am, USA, New York. However it is not a lot, for regular shipping I believe no rush it is $8, not a lot, I’m getting 6 toys! Yet it’s only $30 all together! And that is with shipping! I remember getting only 2 small toys on Amazon for $18 and that’s with free shipping! That’s $36 just for 4 small toys! Amazing deal! Using the code I bet it’s even cheaper! I have to lock this in and order! Thank you so much Flock Talk for directing me here, I was going to order planet pleasure toys off Amazon but this is way better! ❤️💕

Maybe start target training them from within the cage, and slowly they can come out. They probably feel pretty stressed if they are in the cage all day long!

This is way off subject up obviously I’m here to learn how to make my bird be more quiet but the corn plant you have behind you from what I read there poisonous. Is this type corn plant poisonous or on the Internet does it really mean a literal corn plant, because I put my corn plant lay out in the hall in the foyer where the bird doesn’t go and I would like to have it in the house if it’s safe and well since you have verge you would know
