Who left the gate open??

Apparently someone left the gate open that leads onto what is now a closed highway and this Chevy pickup drove right on through not knowing the road was now a snowmobile and ski trail. He got a little too close to the edge and ended up stuck in the ditch. After hiking to a nearby ski resort to borrow some shovels he attempted to dig himself out and made some progress until he broken the front axle in his truck. After that he was stuck there for the night and slept in his truck. The next day someone on the trail called me about it, so Grumpy and I took the 4x4 wrecker up to see if we could get him pulled out. With a little bit of winching we were able to get him out and spun around where he was able to drive out and back down the mountain on his own.

I’m a 57 year old Oregonian that retired from the Army (Grunt) and I know exactly what you mean about the cardboard on the radiator, works every time. Having Grumpy along tells me you’re open to the wisdom of people that went before you and Grumpy respects that greatly whether he says it or not but I think he does. When a man is forgotten and not needed, it can affect them badly, thank you Case. One day I hope to return the great things you’ve done for others. A heavy truck/vehicle can behave differently on rough terrain, lighter trucks can “float” over small bad patches a little bit better than a full size rig and often that can be all one needs to get out.

Casey- as someone who has run chains on a dually in Montana for an entire winter (2wd utility truck) and gotten stuck extensively, get chains that run the full width of the dual. Or else if the chains start digging you just dig the 1/2 to 3/4” difference of the chained up dual vs the unchained one and the chained one digs an inch and the unchained one spins on the ice and you remain stuck. I suppose if you are never in a “stuck” situation it wouldn’t matter. If you just need a little more traction on hard pack snow, it wouldn’t matter… But if you need those chained up duals to dig, then get full width.

I was assigned to Eilson AFB in Alaska and we drove off road everyday. I got stuck in a very similar way. Bad thing was the squadron commander was in the truck with me. I got out the Hi-Lift jack we always carried, jacked and pushed it over till we were out of the ditch. He never said anything about it but we never had any trouble about getting stuff like Hi-Lift jacks from then on. We even modified M series vehicles with snow plows and winches because we were off road so much.

Same deal in my area. MET in el dorado county outside of Placerville CA is legally 4wd/greensticker under 1,000cc from Sly Park Reservoir to the interchange at silver fork rd in snow conditions and everything from silver fork to hwy 88 is tracked vehicles only. There is a gate at silver fork but if they get 6ft of snow overnight or there is 10ft of snow on the ground then a gate really doesn’t matter (and legally doesn’t matter). 4x4 clubs have been volunteering and handing out maps for 20 yrs showing winter closures and we still get people arguing saying “I’ve been going through there over snow for 30yrs and never had an issue”

So the cardboard thing is another in the laundry list of derogatory terms I’ve had to unlearn … but that is a mighty fine resourceful person’s wintertime thermostat you repurposed for your self preservation and warmth … all the fancy folk around here have purposely tailored blankets with Velcro openings to control the winter air flow on their pickups … the big rigs have ‘‘em too!

One thing that you could weave into a video is to take the camera and get up close to the end of your boom. I'm curious on how it's built; I know you have those pulleys there, but they swivel, and I'd like to see how it's constructed; in that it swivels, and yet still holds all that weight.. and also how the major pins look at the bottom of the boom- I'm just curious as to how it's all constructed-- since I'm watching fabrats and Matt off road recovery build their trucks: I'm just curious how their builds compare to an actually professionally built boom, and the layout of the toolboxes, etc. (which I know you already went over the tool boxes). The little details like that make for a good video.

Those socks are fantastic on snow, asphalt destroys them. I have talked to so many class 8 drivers grumpys age, because of arthritis or being busted up in their younger years they can't throw chains anymore the socks give them the ability to get down the road. They are a godsend for real, experienced drivers. I'll take a dozen grumpys over twenty kids anytime. Experience talks. Love that guy.

Casey, you may or may not know this, but check out the headlight switch relay mod for any 87-91 ford f series. The headlights are originally wired straight to the switch. The switch over time heats up and wears down. The relay takes away some of the load from the switch. It will definitely shine brighter and extend the life of the bulbs.
