This is my mom's ex-depression room. We've made serious progress with each declutter pass, but it still needs help. Her craft supplies have gotten a little messy, so today I want to help her do a quick round of decluttering to get her better organized. But because all of these supplies are so tiny, it makes for stressful, tedious work. Today my goal is to help her move through the During and move closer to having that dream sewing room shes always wanted.

If you're in the midst of your own journey, just know that this process takes time and that length of time will be different for everyone. As long as you never quit on yourself, you will keep making progress and get the "after" you dream of. Hope you guys have had a great weekend so far! Lastly, the book launch is getting closer!!! April, please tell your mom not to be embarrassed about her depression room - for she is most certainly not alone!!! So many of us can relate to how that happens - even if we all have different reasons! Also, she is our hero for having the courage to put it on the internet so that we can all be inspired and for that we are all forever grateful!!

I would like add my words of encouragement to the others I’m seeing in the comments section: your Mom should know that MANY OF US have creative spaces that look similar, if not WORSE, than her “former depression room”! Not only is she brave to take us along on her journey, she’s SUPER SMART for allowing help from someone who specializes in organizing! GO MOM❣️

It's almost a lost cause to explain to someone that doesn't watch KZbin why I choose KZbin over shows and movies or why I feel "connection" to "my" channels...it has been a joy and privilege to watch your mom's journey from camera shy to an empowered space maker (even though she still has doubts and struggles). I love witnessing real life and growth and all the little things (like self doubt and pets) that connect us. Most people are on some kind of growth journey, but we don't all have a camera to share with the world or a coach (April) to help us recognize positive truths and learn to be gentle with ourselves. Thank you to you both for sharing. ❤

Im so glad that you still have your mum, to go thru all this stuff with her. My mum was a seamstress and she taught me lots of things, but so much of her skills have died with her. Its always a bit teary to do sewing these days, andvill never be as good, but its lovely to realise that so much of who i am, and what im good at is because of hanging out with her as she made so many clothes for us over the years. Dad died a year ago today, so am somewhat sooky in this comment. So glad you can help your mum. Luv from Australia.

Your Mom is so relatable to me. I also have a room for sewing projects, exercise AND seed starting. Although my seed starting situation is sorted out, my project stuff is in complete disarray, also making it harder to exercise. For the past few months I’ve been questioning whether being a quilter is a fantasy, however after watching this video I realize that I just need to declutter and reorganise my space. By the way, the two sewing machine dilemma is real! 😂

Thanks for this extended series -- a realistic picture of what's involved in making a space usable every step of the way, and over time. Each result was a success which she and you simply built upon during the next pass together. Great work on mom's part between times too. Love this series. "... so much happiness has come out of this room, it's just been incredible." Says it all.

Also I reread my comment and maybe it sounds like I'm suggesting your mom get rid of her sewing machines but NO, I was talking about the automatic? one that she mentioned not knowing how to use. @@SpaceMakerMethod I had the same serger dilemma and I have to say, I'm with your mom. I used mine a few times, got tired of the tedious threading process, and decided to put it away and instead plan to get one with the automatic threader. BUT I have not purchased it yet because I want to make sure I will actually use it often enough to justify the price. The automatic ones are much more expensive than the basic models!

It is great that your are getting to do a 3rd pass through with your Mom. I know the display holder for the thread is cute, but they really need to be in a box. Having them exposed to the sun/light has them become brittle faster. Also they get dusty and then the dust is in your sewing machine which is a new set of problems.

I have absolutely loved this series. It has been a joy to watch the progress and see the joy your mom has taken on over the course of the journey. It seems like she has become happier and more lively! I so wish you would have taken the serger out of the cardboard box for her though so on a whim she could try it? (removing obstacles or layers to start) I think sometimes as we age learning to use any new-to-you thing is more daunting and it is just easier to stick with what you know and already like( takes less time and energy to just use the one you know) Possibly just make trying the other machines their own little project to tackle on a weekend or set a month to learn it? maybe put another small table in the corner to have it set up so her other one is still ready: but she can learn new ones in small spurts then? learning to thread it and use it on some scraps may help transitioning to the other machines easier? Same with the computer one. And she can then figure out if she even likes either of the others over her singer? and if she doesnt maybe she can sell those to help pay for the automatic she talked about or just declutter them eventually if they aren't useful to her. but hopefully she will enjoy them after practicing with them. But seriously you both totally made the whole house easier to use and more full of joy.

Your mom’s little dog reminded me of the time I was visiting with my mother at my Nana’s house. Mama came from Dalton, Ga, I came from Cary, NC and my Nana lived in between. My mother brought her precious little IG, Georgio. He quietly went to the bedside table where I had slept the night before and made some very good impressions in my brand new and very costly mouth guard. I was furious but what can ya do. I just rinsed it off and used it for many year, after. The little tooth imprints were a nightly reminder. Your mom is a seasoned declutter now.❤️🐕🐕

Craft rooms are the hardest to declutter as it feels wrong to get rid of supplies. My craft room is also my home office and my craft is quilting, both activities take up lots of space and require lots of organizing. I’ve accepted that I will never be done with this room and that’s okay. When I’m no longer able to quilt I will get rid of all craft supplies but until then it’s just keeping it from getting out of control.

A few nice deep cabinets from IKEA would solve this quickly. Once it is sorted and curated, you know where everything is and it is ready for you when you are inspired. Save the good stuff. The beautiful embroidery would make a nice statement piece once framed and mounted. A family heirloom. My girlfriend's mother was a skilled crafter and had a ton of stuff. Because it was all sorted neatly in categories and stored properly away from light, mold, moths, it was easy to pass it on to those who would benefit .. including myself.

I have been helping my mom (83 yrs. old) declutter her house for the last 5 years. In the beginning she was very reluctant to get rid of anything. After watching your videos and other similar videos I was able to gently convince her to get rid of more and more things each time we "revisit" spaces in her home. Yes, it was hard for me as well because some of the things were also sentimental to me and we both have a love for dishes and decor. But I gently reminded my mom (and myself) of the "rules" of decluttering and have been able to slowly get rid of more and more things in her house and in my house as well. I just took another load of things to Goodwill from my mom's house not to mention the 5 bags of trash/recycling. In Nov she was able to let go of 4 trash bags of skirts that she had been keeping even though she wasn't wearing them. She can't wear heels anymore and they were too long for her to wear. We were fearful of her tripping on them and falling. We keep reminding ourselves that we are in different "seasons" of life, and we have to "let go" of things that don't serve us in the current season of life. There is still more to declutter in our homes, but we do a little here and there as time permits. I live 40 minutes away from my mom. Thanks to your mom for giving us more inspiration to declutter and tidy.

Your mom has come a long way. Congratulations to you both. Congratulations to her for letting go so much and congratulations to you for helping her with getting her things organized. If by next time she hasn't gotten rid of most of the fabrics, then I suggest the wall that the big painting is you and her consider getting a wall to wall IKea sectional closet with lots and lots of shelves and doors to hide them. I saw a video from Alexandra Gatter where she organized her handyman, workshop and it looks wonderful. She was able to hide most of the things by building this shelf organizing wall to wall closet. She was able to hid so much stuff in an organized labeled way it was inspiring. Your mom will love it and so will you after everything is put away out of sight out of mind kind of thing. If I had the space, I would do it myself.

As I recall, Mama-April has been busy with dozens of projects since the first pass. If she'd been forced to declutter all her crafting things those projects - that doing - wouldn't have been done, or she'd have needed to buy more. I fully agree with you on no decluttering what you know you'll use and also with allowing others to determine their own pace - although - occasionally it's good to throw in a 'how long have you had it and not used it?' question 😁

I like April's suggestion of a long desk big enough to have all of them out all the time. The older she gets, the harder it will be to lift the machines and set them up and later pack them away. Being able to give each their own assigned spot makes it possible to just walk over to the machine you want to use and just start using it. This would be extremely convenient for someone who continually shifts between projects and will allow her to do more. One suggestion, though, is that one of her early projects might be to create pretty dust covers for each machine.

Another KZbinr, Cass from Clutterbug, suggests donating extra craft supplies to long term care homes (aka nursing homes) and retirement homes, since crafting is one of the activities staff often organize for residents. Schools might also accept some, because elementary-age students could use them as art supplies.

She should be proud of herself as you should be proud of yourself not just decluttering for other people, but giving them the tools to be able to it by themselves in the future, with a little push but also endless amount of kindness and care. Sidenote, since this is your moms hobby room and she mentioned being intimidated by the serger - I learned sewing on my moms fully mechanical Pfaff machine and was really intimidated when I bought my first sewing machine with quite a bit more bells and whistles - as well as digital components. That being said, my mom gifted me her serger this year and even though it might take your mom half an hour to thread all four threads the first few times, it is a steep learning curve and she'll adapt fairly quickly in my opinion, so having a serger is always a win in my (sewing) book. Maybe she can just try it out on a few projects without putting too much pressure on herself and see how it goes? Sending lot's of love :)

I feel like your mom needs a project basket shelf with her matching baskets. So cute. Love the embroidery.

I just saw your Mom’s CDs and it made me think of when I was still holding onto them. When I finally let go, I did this painstaking process of downloading every song I liked from every album and putting them onto an iPod shuffle. The problem with that was - it went through the washing machine one time and I could no longer hear the music or get it off of my iPod to put on another device. I have a suggestion to gift your parents something like Spotify and then help them set up their own playlist with all of those CDs on it. I still need to do this for myself, but slowly work on it when I think of it. I have to actually remember the songs though 🤔

I loved this video! I relate to your mom very much. I get attached to stuff and I hold on to it for too long and then I get overwhelmed. This video actually helped me plan out my sewing/hobby room as well. I recently started sewing and I now know I don't need a serger ;) and I might get a foldable table too for my pattern cutting. I was planning on buying a big table for my sewing machine to also use it for patterns but now that I think about it, that might be a waste of space. Thank you for the video and all the best to you and your mom❤

Hi, April! Great job on the sewing room, Mom and April! Hope you are stating warm! I live in Michigan and have not had power at my house for two days. And it’s freezing here. Lucky for me, my late boyfriend’s sister offered me to come stay with them till I get power. Lost all my food and had to throw it out. What a waste! Hope all is well. Hugs! 💙🥰💙 Go Lions!!!

Love your content. Thank you. For me the carpet looks cluttered. A solid color or more subtle carpet would look more clean to me. Maybe you already said where it came from and I know being grateful for what you have is also part of the process.

Tell your mum don’t get rid of the serger. They are not that difficult to thread and there are cheat ways to change thread. she will love the server once she starts using it, the professional looking finish you get she will love. There are some great KZbin videos to show you how. If you want recommendations let me know.

Not sure sure what is the background behind the name of this room, but maybe you can change the name to the joy room and add things that make her happy. Change the identity of the room. Start fresh. Sometimes we need to declutter our energy also.

I mean.. the thing is, if you have hobbies, you're going to have stuff. It's going to look like you use it. It's just a craft room. They aren't going to look like a magazine and perfectly organized.

It is very hard to declutter a creative space. A person is always hoping that they will get the time, energy, creative spark to use the space and items again. Projects started and not completed claim they want our attention but we need to remember that the act of creating them was what was important. Finishing it may not be necessary. Send it to your favorite charity store. You will be surprised that it has a life of its own and that it will attract attention and energy from someone else.
