Ed, to be honest it's not so much that it's cheap speed. It's that it's those speeds much quicker than most vehicles. If you're taught properly and understand how to do it safely, riding a motorcycle is the best thing you can do with clothes on

The main reason I bought one was because it was the cheapest way to get those thrills, and it gets even better in the corners. Nothing else really comes close for $3,000 all up. That said, some of the bike guys I've met are truly nuts. One guy broke his left (clutch) arm, and decided to ride home (in traffic) one-handed! We went for a ride together to the MotoGP, and their idea of a bed/tent was a LOT of beer (which they put on the seat, and then sit on top of), and passing out in the trees just off the highway... sadly I didn't stay for that and rode home before the drinking started.

As a former racer and track instructor with a modified 2007 GSXR 1000 with close to 200 hp and regularly over 190 mph on the long straights at Miller or Calgary, I agree with the notion of getting used to speed where 100 mph seems downright slow. If you really want to scare your mom, try this. I would regularly offer students two up rides around the track so they could experience what the bike was capable of. While the school owner would wheelie at 120 mph with a passenger, I took slightly different approach. In the middle of an 80 mph corner, while leaned over with my knee on the pavement, I would casually take my left hand off the bar and touch the pavement with my glove. You could really feel the passenger grasp harder. Shits and giggles. And by the way, I was not young and stupid as I was in my fifties.

My buddy and I had both gotten our first bikes a few years back now, his was a 07 Yamaha R6 and I got myself a cherry 06 Honda CB600F Hornet. I'd been riding about 2 years at that point with that bike and felt extremely comfortable with it while he had only really ridden about 1000 miles on his R6 and that was all the riding time he had seen in his life. We meet up to go scootin around town and ride together to go out and have a good time and we take a really nice twisty scenic route by Lake Michigan that's got an unusually high speed limit of 55 mph because the majority of the area is residential housing so it seems kind of odd for there to be a 55 mph speed limit but that's why we love the road so much. The road actually takes you from town to town but at one point you reach one town that's about 6 miles across with a speed limit of 25 mph the entire way through with nothing but stop and go traffic and more stop lights than you can imagine, you have to get through this town to get back into a 55 mph zone on the road. So we get through town obeying the traffic laws of going 25 mph the entire way because we know the area pretty well and the cops basically abuse the laws there as there's not really any reason for the speeds to be as low as they are, we make it through unscathed and out back onto this nice road and pick up the pace. About another mile down the road I see construction up ahead so I motion to my buddy that we're gonna turn off and go around and well the turnoff is a beautiful C shape curve with a good banking on it so when I turn onto it I pin it. I'm watching the speed go from 25 to 45 to 65 to 85 and I hit 100 mph around this turn dragging hard parts on the ground from my bike when I'm about halfway through the curve and I hear a loud snap followed by my rear end sliding as if it was pushed by an other-worldly force completely into the oncoming lane and at this point i'm looking about completely horizontal across the road at 100mph with my buddy speeding up behind me thinking "well this is where I die". By the grace of god while my bike was literally drifting down the road my rear tire hit a reflective marker from the center lane lines that shifted the bike back underneath me and I recovered the turn. I rolled my bike to a halt and my friend came rolling up next to me white as a ghost and said "I swear I thought you were gonna die just now". Now this wasn't the first time I had ever rode on this curve before and I don't remember there ever being any kind of hazards in it that would pull a tire right out from underneath the bike so I went back to go look at what exactly had sent me into that situation and as I'm riding back I see a bunch of bits of plastic on the road and then one big rectangular one. As I got closer I realized that it was the guard for the radiator on the front of my bike. The loud snap noise was the clips that were keeping it on snapping off completely and it got launched underneath my bike directly under my rear well and sent me completely sideways. And that's why I no longer ride bikes with radiator guards on them or anything that can come off with the force of 100mph wind lol. Leave a like if you enjoyed my short story.

They came back and said never again and I was crazy. 1 week later, I did 190 on a two lane highway between Santa Fe and Edgewood New Mexico. I have ridden and tuned and owned a few very fun to ride bikes in my time, I think you pictured one of my favorites early on in the video as a night time shot. Anyway, much above 100mph with a full face helmet on sitting upright, you get a bit of a wobble going in your head and neck, around 130 it's getting pretty violent! This is why we lay down to tuck under the wind screen! And you had your mom on the back? Every time I went over about 140 MPH these thoughts would slowly creep into my mind, what if my tire blows, what if my chain breaks and takes my leg clean off!? And yet, there is still more throttle to use and so, we use it! 180 MPH + gets somewhat comfortable if you do it often enough.

The faster you go on a bike, the more stable it is. It doesn't want to deviate as much so a small pebble, let alone a pothole, at the upper 100s mph really is less of an issue than if you were going slower.

In 1996 I often road on Middlebranch rd in Hartville , Ohio. On this road there was a turn set up like Mid-Ohio , so it was a slight rise into to a sweeping left. Over time I had gone 75 - 85 - 90 - 95 mph all the way till on Dec 27th 1996 I went 110mph. It was a clear evening w/ temperatures in the low 60's... very unseasonably warm for December in Ohio. It all started perfect , the front end lifted ever so slightly when rising over the hill setting up for this long sweeping left , My knee just barely brushing the pavement just before the apex .... BAM I go over the high side of the curve. Like the hand of God just lifted me up... Well needless to say I did survive. Miraculously I missed hitting a tree and a fence post w/ barbwire , slipping through a gap barely eight feet wide landing in a freshly plowed farmers field ... When the bike had started to lift up out of the corner I heard a voice in my head say " if you let go your dead". I held on to that bike so hard the right handle bar bent to the front forks and my 'L' knee bent the gas tank... though I did not come away unscathed I survived w/ two fractured legs (8 months w/ both legs in cast to the knee on my 'R' to the hip on my 'L' a dislocated 'L' shoulder plus assorted broken ribs on both sides and a fracture at C-5 in my neck... I still ride today on a 1972 R75 BMW... though I rarely go over 70mph... Many Blessings , SMR

Rad dude. Good story. I've never felt the wind lift me up on a sportbike. And a pebble, maybe a decent stone won't take you down at 170 unless sometime crazy like shoots up and makes some oil leak on your tire. Sportbikes aren't that scary but they are that fun.

My experience on my first real road bike (20yrs off road/enduro) about 8mths on it I discovered that I'd become epileptic by having a grand mel seizure on a 4lane road in a built up suburb going about 80kmh/48mph, there is a higher power sometimes watching over us. Woke up next day in hospital with only a few scratches on my leathers and a couple on my Honda VTR1000SP1. Now popping meds and still riding 12yrs on. What could have been, on coming traffic, intersection, parked cars, telegraph poles, full throttle. knowing what happens to the body when you have a grand mel seizure, fkn Lucky to still be. But a good story from it and forever thankful being Catholic. It's one of those thing's that would make a believer out of anyone.🙏

I bought an engine from a competitor in the racing league in which my dad ran when I was 16. My goal was, you guessed it, to drop in my car. Dad was perfectly fine with this, for some reason. When mom found out, she went ballistic. After she cooled off, her clever work around to this engine that was already in the garage was “You can have it, but you cannot put it in the car” Good for me, bad for her, is mom doesn’t understand what aluminum heads look like, performance intake manifolds, or Weber carbs. All she sees is “an engine”. She also can’t tell the difference between stock idle and an idle so lumpy and loud it sounds like someone is throwing rocks at a steel drum. Kids at school laughed when I bought an old Aircooled Bug. They weren’t laughing when I dusted their Mustangs and Camaros

Ed, can you go into more detail about how you make these videos? You know some very cool people (with great stories to tell,) but it would be great to hear from you how you cultivated these relationships, and how you convince them to tell some (sometimes) scandalous things on camera?

I can say having a sport bike in college was the best thing I ever did. Graduated in 2008. Bought a 2003 zx6r. Still have tons of friends I keep in touch with only because I carried my helmet all around campus and it’s an easy way to make friends in an unfamiliar place. 10/10 would recommend.

Reminds me of when I was 19 with a cbr600rr. Was all fun in games until GSP got me at 163 in a 55. I was actually able to get away from the cops. My adrenaline was through the roof so I got off at Union City and stopped at good ole Waffle House. Went to the bathroom, came out and there were 4 GSP officers surrounding my bike. They were not so thrilled. Had to sell the bike to hire an attorney to keep my license. Good times! NOT :)

GSP chargers are faster than I predicted.. at one point through the Grady curves, he was about 10 feet off off my rear wheel. He originally clocked me at 96. I didn't even see him. He hit the blues passing the Varsity, I hit the throttle. Got away, but it came back to bite me. Lesson learned.... don't stop for waffles ;)

This mirrors me so much, I can't stand it, but for me it was a Honda Hurricane 600 in the early 90's. Still ride, and my bike fleet now numbers 12. Waiting on a clutch cable from Dennis Kirk as I type. 😎 Good shit! 😊

I always wanted a sports bike. Then one ran a red light and crashed into my tuned 2002 is300 and I saw him flip for days.. so I decided against getting a bike... but then I saw this, and now I’m going to get a bike! Thanks Vinwiki!

I had the same exact bike at the same exact time . I hit a deer going 70. Lol. Never dropped the bike. This was not my first bike and was the smallest one I owned at that point. It was a baby compared to the zx9r I had or the gsxr1000. Or my R1. But it was fun and nimble. That bike was zippy. My 1000s where fast. Top speed I have achieved was 189 mph. Hold that for a length of time and know what fast means. When you touch 190 on a daily bases.

I heard from experienced bikers that the "pebble in the road" theory is just a myth/misconception/urband legend. The tires will just pick it up and toss it like it wasnt even there. Hearing this from someone who had a bike for a little while is kind of a bummer. You would think he knew better.

This is an amazing story, I’m 17 and I’m from Iowa and me and a couple buddies were going from city to city on Yamaha r6’s but I was the unlucky one to crash at about 160mph, but now I have some titanium body parts for extra protection and I have another Yamaha R6 again live and learn that there might be a small bump in the road lol

I love sharing my own story. My Dad was over at my house and I asked if he wanted to see my new motorcycle. Leading him to the garage, the first thing he says is, it looks like a race bike. I replied, well sort of. He asked how fast does it go. I replied faster than your airplane. You should of seen the look on his face.
