This is good and loved that included the eq because I feel like too much saturation isn't good since can make things too much bright or muddy, and sound less dynamic in heartbeat. Which is why many engineers use ssl, neve and api on certain instruments and stages of a mix too. Took me awhile to learn about this. However I like to use saturation in the mastering stage based on what the track needs and depending what my eq is giving me such as a Pultec. It's so many different flavors out there can experiment with but my favorite is the vertigo vsm 2 and the bax eq from uad. Plug-in alliance versions are pretty good though too

this is an interesting take on this! I tend to involve multiple instances of saturation and analog emulations in the overall processing chain of digital instruments rather than do it parallel. will def give this a try. (edit: I don't go as hard as you do with the plugins bc its not parallel.)

I've found that putting a stereo widener on the end really fleshes this chain out. I personally use Dr. MS. It added a life into it that gave it a little something more. What do you think?

I think you definitely gotta do something with your comparisons, because most of the times it just sounds "louder", and it's hard for beginners to distinguish differences when the volume is going up too! I guess it has something to do with the output db level ?...
@HelpMeDevvon
@HelpMeDevvon Жыл бұрын
Hears the thing. A lot of times with the examples you’re hearing an increase in perceived volume without increasing the actual volume meter. Realize how powerful and gamechanging it is to feel like something is louder and the volume meter hasn’t changed

Since this is a mix I’m gonna assume you level matched, but to anyone who’s new to parallel processing: stay cognizant of level matching when you do this stuff. It’s very easy to ruin a good mix when you start adding parallel distortion sends on everything. Also, if you don’t plan on automating the level of the distortion throughout the track you’re better off putting it on the track itself and using the mix knob within the plugin.

I keep wondering about gain matching in relation to aux/sends. How can you know for sure if it is actually adding value rather than just gain? Can't seem to find this answer anywhere, good thing I came across this video.

Why aren't you leaving the Aux track at unity fader and using the send fader to blend it in? Why set the send to unity and use the aux track to blend it in? It limits you.
