One of the better lectures I've seen. I've always considered video-lectures last resort if I didn't understand a subject (because they're usually clumsy and bad), but with the exam coming up tomorrow and no real understanding on hematopoiesis, I am eternally grateful I watched this. Let's hope I pass the exam x)

@agmg0525 Well it's the truth, people jump onto causes for silly reasons sometimes for selfish purposes. Common sense is a powerful tool to have. Also thanks for the kind words about the lecture, I'm glad this helped.

@lonly4uonly No offense taken, you are entitled to your own opinions like anyone else. I just find it hard to jump on a cause that's not going to change the inevitable just to make myself feel better. Also, since I apply common sense to my teaching and how I approach life then to answer your question yes. It is a powerful too that has been long forgotten in society. So all in all I personally don't think it's a very noble cause.

Aaron Mullally, this lecture was very helpful in terms of explaining hematopoiesis however I was shocked by your extreme lack of understanding and misinformation regarding vegetarianism. It seems inappropriate to discuss such a personal viewpoint in this video. I welcome you to read one of hundreds of books or journal articles which fully discuss the extremely devastating effects that eating meat has on not only ones personal health but also the environment and the well being of animals. To all you vegetarians out there... stay true to yourselves, being vegetarian especially in terms of animal rights is a GREAT cause!! Aaron, perhaps you could start with Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer. It was this book that truly opened my eyes.

of amino acids as "meat", but in practice if one makes a little investment on making sure their protein sources are properly balanced (it is almost harder not to) it's not really an issue. Aside from that, it is a good video. I expect to watch it a few times.

Great tutorial, except for the profound misunderstanding of vegetarianism. Recent systematic reviews, meta-analyses and large-scale randomised controlled trails have shown the superiority of vegetarianism, in terms of health and longevity. Also, the 'protein deficiency' mantra is one of the biggest myths in the nutrition world.

Nice lecture.. But aren't Hemopoietic cells Multipotent cells? In your video it says they are pluripotent cells which is wrong cuz pluripotent cells are in general embryonic stem cells originated from Inner cell mass and thus can differentiate into all cells of the three germ cell layers but not an embryo... On the other hand a multipotent cell can produce a limited range of differentiated cell lineages specific to its location ( Ex. Hemopoietic cells ).. Thank you :)

Ummmmmm was the whole anti-vegetarianism rant really necessary? I'd prefer lectures without a side of personal opinion as that really has no place in science. Thank you anyways

Thank you for the video. I have a question about the method of erythrocyte destruction in the spleen, based on what you said, how the culling process would be selective (killing only aged cells and keeping healthy young ones)?

@tobyntoto128 you misunderstood. i don't say mean things about children. i did not like the way sherri shepard kept petting the girl like she was an animal so i SARCASTICALLY said "i luv how sherri is petting her like a pet."....really meaning "i do not like that". it was sarcasm. so know that i wasnt disrespecting the child. my negativity is for sherri. it bothered me how sherri kept stroking the child like an animal! please dont message me again calling me ugly and fat. thank you

Is it just me or there's a mistake at 28:41 that "valine is replaced by a glutamic acid"?! Glutamic acid is replaced with the hydrophobic amino acid valine at the sixth position, not vice versa...

Mass breeding just to produce meat, having the animals living is horrible conditions, is pretty awefull. If alot of people were vegitarians for this reason, then the meat market would either be forced to create better environments for animals and/or produce less meat. So to me there is a noble cause atleast. You should see the egg-farms etc. Great lecture, and I agree with most of your reasoning around veggo-diets.

This is mostly an excellent video, however, the 1950's idea of vegetarians actually having protein deficiencies, or serious deficiencies of any amino acids, was pretty much disproved in the 1970's. In practice, unless one is anorexic or eating a spectacularly unvaried diet, it just is not common, although it can happen. There are almost too many studies demonstrating this to count, but this isn't primarily a nutrition video. There are a handful of plant proteins that have as good a balance

Are you saying that vegan-ism and vegetarianism are silly? Many very smart people I know, including scientists, nutritionists, and doctors, are vegan. There are many great humanitarian, environmental, physical health, and animal rights reasons for this lifestyle choice. I suggest you Go Read a Book.... or two.

what the meaning of multipotent uncommitted stem cells
@phillipbeck198810 жыл бұрын
multipotent uncommited stem cells are stem cells that are not specialised and therefore can produce various types of progenitor cells. a committed stem cell is specialised and can only form ONE specific type of progenitor cell

Way to go with the ignorance!! and the pathetic excuse to eat meat because "animals are going to die any way" Is about the senseless torture and the awful conditions all this animals are kept, cages where they can barely move or extend their limbs. Do your research eating red meat and process meat has been linked to colorectal cancer among other health issues. People who are going through chemotherapy are giving particular diets that doesn't involve meat, why do you think that is? I understand some of you can't stop been carnivores but a sustainable farming with products free of chemicals is a great alternative for good health.
