I'm really looking forward to seeing how the 6.1 stock manifolds will bolt up. I'd like to do that with my ram, but I do have the 08 engine, so I have the egr hole on cylinder #2 exhaust, and I have the rectangle exhaust port heads (Can't remember if it was Apache or Eagle), so I'm not sure if things will line up. Boy the "log" exhaust manifolds that came stock are crying for better flow!

@@The3chordwonder Unfortunately the SRT headers won't work for the ram trucks. They'll bolt up to the headers just fine, but they are too wide to fit the engine bay.

That resonates with me so much. Some that have high knowledge or skill don’t have the patience or ability to translate it in a coachable manner. My father could fix anything but couldn’t teach or explain it if his life depended on it. I would learn through trial and error on my own. 2014 Durango R/T awd 5.7. 130k miles. Just did the cam and lifter job. Tore it down as soon as I heard the tick. Two lifters were failed but hadn’t seized yet (one mds lifter and one non mds lifter went out). The coinciding lobes were beginning to pit and about 4 other lobes had the hardened coating rubbed off. Just caught it in time before the cam got chewed up. Did an mds delete kit by AMS had everything I needed and more. First ever cam/lifter job, pretty straight forward just took the weekend and about $2k. Shop quoted $5k. I’m getting better city mileage by 1-2mpg (according to the computer) with the mds delete and tune and it’s way smoother. Love this engine even more now that I’ve torn it down. Hopefully I’ll get another 200k+ miles out of it.

Pushing about 390 rwhp now on my l’il ol’ 5.7L challenger ;) Not much more for me to do except a supercharger, but I think I’ll keep this NA for long term durability. In this video I learned that I did not have to take off the oil pump and pickup tube. They were a pain to get back on as I recall. There are also marks on the chain and bottom of the crank craft sprocket for timing alignment in case you do remove the chain and cam phaser like I did. There are a few tricks to putting it all back together too, like putting black oil rated permatex at the joint of the timing cover, oil pan and block; torque sequence for NEW head bolts; thread lock on intake bolts to name a few. Great video, the thing I've learned as a lifelong home improvement carpenter, this isn't something I would take on myself. I like seeing how these Hemi's are put together though.

😂 I hear ya, in much the same way I'm not going to take on any carpentry jobs myself, always a disaster.

Fantastic instruction. Also great tip on draining the oil after the heads are back on to ensure any coolant that made it's way into the pan during head removal gets flushed out. Watching this makes me want to go and mess with my truck! Maybe in the spring.

I had lifter failure , your videos guided me step by step with a few hiccups I replaced Camshaft , Lifters , Push Rods , Valve Springs , Spark Plugs and Gaskets on my 5.7 Pursuit . Started right up , no check engine light car is definitely faster even without a tune . Thankyou

Did you keep MSD lifters? Or did you do a MSD delete for the 6.4 Camshaft ?

Yes Sir, I have a ‘12 5.7 charger, Recently had a mechanic check my car and cylinder 3 had low compression around 40. The gentleman told me that I have motor issue so I need to replace it, said their known for having had camshafts so I want to upgrade that also.

I just rebuilt the hemi on my '08 ram, so a lot of the steps are similar. I think it's really cool that you were able to hang the cam sprocket off the side, without removing the oil pump, which also means avoiding pulling the oil pan. I did a full rebuild, so I had to anyway, but still, a great idea. I'm sure there might be some who are wondering why you pulled the heads for a cam swap, but the lifters are under the head, so you need to pull them to swap out lifters. If you have a MDS-equipped vehicle, you typically need to remove the MDS on aftermarket camshafts, which means new lifters. Not sure on the Challenger, but on my ram, both heads had a ground strap connected with a 10mm (I think) bolt. I didn't see either because the strap is bolted to the rear of the head. When I tried to pull the heads, I got caught up on the ground strap, and ultimately scratched the head on the dowel when trying to finagle it out. Which meant a trip to the machine shop for me (Ended up machining off 0.006" so it wasn't a deep scratch). I can confirm, if you unscrew the radiator petcock too much, you get a coolant shower. With my 08 ram, I couldn't get even the specific puller to work. I had to use a combination of pullers, pulling against wrenches that were slid between the holes/webs of the crank pulley (The ram pulley is very deep). It was an exercise in patience, as well as determining which wrenches of mine were junk and bent when I tried to use the puller with them. At least for the ram, you need to rent a "long reach" balancer installer. The regular installers won't work because the threads are so deep on the crank, that the threads won't grab on a standard puller. I can also say to be careful when tightening the coil packs back on. I buzzed them on quick, and twisted the threaded insert/plastic mount right off the valve cover. JB weld though is holding it fine, I did that repair over a year ago when I had changed the spark plugs. Oh and from experience, just get Mopar lifters. Don't cheap out and get others. Otherwise you will have low oil pressure and you can either be cheap like me and weld up the extra holes on each lifter, or end up spending even more money and getting new mopar lifters. I used "Enginetech lifters" but if you look at them, you can see the two holes near the rollers I'm talking about. (Not to be confused with the holes near the center of the lifter for the MDS lifters). Lets see, what else...Oh, if you decide to replace the MDS solenoid, or the plugs, you will need to buy new ones because you have a very small chance you'll be able to yank the solenoid/plugs without breaking the top off. Twisting doesn't help - the heat bakes the plastic and makes it fragile. As always great video, no crazy commentary or music, just get-to-the-point wrenching, the way I like it!

Appreciate the in depth feedback Tucker! Quick tip for getting the MDS solenoids out without breaking them, give them a quick smack on the top of the solenoid with a plastic mallet, this breaks the seal and you can usually get them out after that! 👍

So my 2012 2500 ate the cam a few years back so I decided to rebuild the motor. I went with the 6.4 cam, mopar performance springs. Went ahead and did a little head work and back cut all the valves. Added oversized throttle body and had it custom tuned by HemiFever. At first i wasnt too sure about it because it does lose torque down low, but a little more throttle and there it is. The torque curve moves up a bit. I can tell you that i am definatley over 450hp at the wheels and cruising at 30mph and gun it i can get to 75 in about 1 second flat. I have yet to have any truck beat me at a light that includes Raptors. Keeping the VVT is excellent as it works as almost a turbo boost. When the stock hemis are rolling out of steam im just hitting the sweet spot.

I just bought a 2015 Ram 1500 with 75k, I own a mobile repair shop and i feel like I'm hearing a slight internal tick on the passenger side and it's just in the back of my mind, I'm planning to have to do the job some day haha but it runs perfect for now. I did the passenger exhaust manifold the first week I had it because of course it had those 2 broken bolts in the back. Everyone complains about the cam/lifter failures but for me, it's such an awesome powerful truck that I'll take my chances and if they go I'll fix it in a weekend or long day and be on my way

I own a 2014 jku with the 3.6 PentaStar V6. Engine has an Edlebrock EForce supercharger. I started having a heating problem anytime I was under load or in a boost condition. Original mileage was approx 41,000 miles when overheating started. I installed an upgraded (larger) new radiator from Griffith radiators. It was a model specific radiator upgrade including 2 electric fans, and a custom shroud. New factory thermostat, and I bacame ultra cautious by always watching the factory temp gauge and the digital temp gauge I installed for more specific information. At about 43,000 miles, I suffered a catastrophic engine failure due to overheating and the original engine failed. Total loss of compression in all cylinders. I had a new genuine Jeep replacement engine purchased from an actual Jeep dealer. With the new engine, I had a new water pump, new thermostat, both temp sensors, knock sensors, new serpentine belt, new coolant. New engine runs great however my overheating issues remain present. I have less than 1,000 miles on the new engine and I am looking for ideas on what could be causing my overheating?? Cost to replace the engine exceeds $10,000 with parts, labor, and misc supplies. If anyone has ideas, suggestions, questions for me, please contact me at bloughd@aol.com. Thank you for any help.

Thanks for a great video. I have a '17 Scat Pack and have been thinking of a cam swap once my warranty is expired. This video did show me that its easier than I thought. I was thinking front bumper, grill, etc would need to come off! Also glad to see that other stuff can be left attached (water pump, ac comp, etc) makes this job so much more doable in my home garage! Keep it up! Looking forward to part 2.
