To help others, I had this issue with my 2012 Ram Power Wagon. It drove me nuts because I really need my remote start to work. I replaced the gas cap (no luck) and I replaced the Evap Canister (no luck). The check engine light would pop back on within a couple minutes every time. Turns out that if I give it the recommended amount of clicks on my gas cap, the check engine light will come on, but if I only click it only once or twice it will not come on. My issue has been fixed for a few thousand miles now by only clicking the gas cap twice each time I fill up. I'm not sure why it works but it definitely works. I found this out accidently, I haven't found any other people with the same experience. Give it a try before pouring money into it.

I had the lovely P0456 (very small leak) code about a year ago. Gas cap was on. Decided the most common fix was a new gas cap. Sure enough, that fixed it. The seal on my old cap was just simply shot. Finally a cheap repair, only $10!
@richardpayne78512 жыл бұрын
I put a plastic bag over my gas cap to test the cap and then screwed it in to the tank, light went away almost immediately. Of course that was after I had replaced the purge valve and ESOM. But it is a good quick test for the cap.

I got a purge code on my old Toyota truck. I am a DIY shade tree mechanic, at best, and not really familiar with technical issues around these evap systems. After reading a little, I found it was suggested that the gas cap might cause my issues. A new gas cap from Toyota was pricey and I wasn't sure it was even the issue. I bought a cheapo $5 Stant universal replacement. I removed the rubber gasket from the Stand and replaced the cracked one on my OEM (27Yrs old) gas cap with that. Problem cured. How lucky can you get? Eric, thank you so much for these great videos...

These systems always seem to be a little more complex than I expect. I wish service data was a little more explicit regarding how each of the valves work. Even the pressure of a smoke machine can close valves that you may expect to be open.

In all fairness Chrysler OE info on the ESIM system is pretty good and very detailed. I have a "brief" understanding of how it works with out the need to go back and read the nitty gritty details so I hope some of my ignorance doesn't make you think they don't have a detailed explanation. Just for me, sometimes during the diag certain details are not needed. If I was digging deep and not satisfied with my findings, it would be at that point I would jump into service data to find what I needed. Does that make sense?

What always bugs me with manufacturers who use a gas cap for a light when typically it isn't a gas cap problem. Usually an evap problem from the fill neck down. When I worked at a Chrysler dealer, most of the time it ended up being a rusted out hose clamp causing vacuum leak or just rust that finally ate through a steel component to the tank or a purge issue that the ecm didn't catch. The gas cap was usually the last thing we encountered as the culprit. It makes a customer spend the money on stuff they didn't need before getting to the actual problem

I "had" a two year old, 2014, Chrysler 200, it had the same light on. Only the expensive Chrysler gas cap would turn off the light. This is the same problem I'm having with 2013 Dodge Ram. Frist, thing I check was the gas cap which look good, I clean the 0-ring and put a bit of lub on it, clear the code but light came back on. Thinking no more than it cost I would just replace the cap with a new OME one but no joy. As of this post I have replace both the Purge valve and the ESIM with OEM parts but so far no help. If I live up there where Eric dose I would just let him have it.😉

Replace the short right angled hose on the evap pump valve or try to put screwclamps on both ends of the hose to seal it better. From experience it is seldom the gas cap, or the evap valve itself. But that hose is exposed to all elements under the truck.

I have seen so many intermittent failures on the Chrysler ESIM system, it's very frustrating. Usually the little weighted plunger getting a little stuck sometimes or just not riding smoothly enough or the contacts for the switch failing to operate properly or the connector on the ESIM failing due to corrosion intrusion along the sealed seam of the plastic halves. Thankfully most of the time the ESIM is in stock at the dealer, it's not terrible expensive, and it's easy to change so if the customer wants to parts cannon it the risk is fairly low.
