I'm glad Toy Story 2 finally broke the mandatory Disney policy to make sequels only direct to video, even as a young kid I found it disappointing that movies like Aladdin, Lion King and Pocahontas were cinematic impressive movies only to be downgraded to low quality and basic story sequels that were just pilot for tv series. Sure the direct to video sequels continue, at least for their animated movies, but glad Disney let Pixar and the new CGI movies get some better treatment by having their sequels go to theaters and hence keep the better production and more develop stories. If it haven't been for Toy Story 2 forcing Disney to make it for theaters, I think the recent sequels like Frozen 2 and Ralph Breaks the internet would had end up as cheap low CGI straight to dvd sequels and Disney would had been fine as long as they were making money on the name.

Fascinating video. One other thing I've read about the plot is with regard to Woody's Roundup. Lasseter and others have said it was inspired by several 1940s/50s western franchises, but from looking at a few myself, one stands out as matching elements of Woody's gang almost perfectly: Roy Rogers. In his show and films before it, Roy often worked as a cowboy private investigator and on at least one occasion even serves as interim sheriff (kind of like Woody). Bullseye's equivalent in the franchise is Trigger and was billed as "the smartest horse in the movies" (remember the song line "Bullseye, he's a smart one"?). Prospector's form appears to be inspired by Gabby Hayes, Roy Rogers' sidekick in his earlier stuff. As for Jessie, she's clearly a character with multiple influences, but Roy's cowgirl wife Dale Evans may have been inspiration for her (though she and Woody are more like siblings). Roy was insanely popular with kids of the era, possibly second only to Superman. Roy Rogers actually died while Toy Story 2 was being made, so perhaps this was a tribute to him. If anyone's interested, some of the Roy Rogers films and episodes are actually here on KZbin!

But all of the hassles of the production ultimately paid off. On the back of the VHS copy, Entertainment Weekly described Toy Story 2 as "the rare sequel that lives up to its predecessor." Lotso Is actually the worst Villain of the series, And all of Pixar. The way they handled his backstory is the main reason why ToyStory3 is my least favourite in the series [and toy story 2 is my favourite movie of all time]. It just feels so weak and abrupt as they don’t really show that lots so cares about Daisy, even though they say that he does, which leads me to think that he never truly loved her, Especially when you Compare his backstory to Jessie’s. Don’t get me wrong, it’s truly gut punching whenever he snaps and throws big baby‘s heart pendant away, but the build up towards it it’s just not that good and honestly one of the weakest things that Pixar has ever done in their movies. I know that obviously being abandoned and replaced, Especially after not giving up and working so hard to return home it’s truly a devastating thing for a toy [let alone any living being for that matter], but it just feels too general and automatic, and like I said above, not specific enough to Lotso unlike Jessie’s Song, and Gabby Gabby and Duke Caboom’s [and even buzz with the commercial] Back stories.

Well what I told you that this was the version that was almost deleted. Yes, this version was rejected but they still animated many scenes back in 1997. Only for the 3 years of time wasted once this version was rejected. Causing the animators to restart ALL OVER AGAIN, in scratch and with a rushing deadline of 9 months. Yes, most Pixar films take 3 to 4 years to animate but Toy Story 2's final product too 9 MONTHS to re-animate, rewrite and re-record and like more than a week for a new plot. With a rushed script and animation made on a deadline, this should have been a HUGE disaster, but it's a miracle this movie is so good. Good enough to even top the original. Big respects to Pixar. 🍻

You forgot that the movie was saved by an employee who was on maternity leave and had the movie saved on her home computer when Pixar's computers had crashed.
@HemmasStudios_2 жыл бұрын
I actually had that whole portion written into the video, but scrapped it for a few reasons: 1) That event was pretty self contained. Even though it was crazy, once the problem was solved, it ultimately didn’t effect the direction of the movie’s development. 2) It took the video’s script and made it 50% longer- and I like to keep the videos as lean as possible 3) Since it ultimately didn’t effect the direction of the movie’s development, I thought it would be irrelevant to the video, but it’s a story that’s interesting enough that I think it could be it’s own separate video :D maybe someday.

I had some ideas for toy story 5. The plot will have Woody and the gang going to an almost toys R us plaza inspired place. Stinky Pete an Lotso return as the film's Villains. He man appears in the film because Giggle mentions him in the 4th film.
@bluesfaninc30012 жыл бұрын
But Lotso actor is died.
@gavinwilson58952 жыл бұрын
They could replace the actor Also, if this plot were to happen, I think it would be neat for the villains to be a bit more beat-up compared to their original appearances, lots of could have stiches, Pete's pickaxe could be broken, etc

It's a testament to just how good the movie is that Zurg, being the third villain of the movie, is better than most primary villains in most movies.

Hey man, I just started watching here. I actually know most the plot. I got the read a PDF of the original '96 script. And (a little not to my surprise, it was darker). The only thing I wish they kept was Bullseye could talk. They did (and sorry for not watching the whole vid before commenting) almost finish a deleted version of Buzz in Al's Toy Barn where he takes out the batteries of Zurg's Ion Blaser (ping pong balls).

And the animation, despite having age, definitely holds up better than the first film’s animation. Also helps that the world feels much more expansive in the sequel than the first which was limited to a subdivision, a pizza restaurant and a gas station and emphasizes the larger than life viewpoint of the toys in comparison to what viewers are ordinarily used to due to being human-sized.

I’ve searched the web to find the script myself, and I must say, not that bad of a story. Though it would have been cool to see a talking Bullseye, a comical fight between Ultra Buzz and Zurg, and the museum curators of M.O.F.O., it definitely has changed a bit into the film we know and love today. Great vid, keep it up

So, yeah. Essentially, the original script was scrapped and redeveloped because it didn't live up to Pixar's standards of quality. John Lasseter called it a Disaster, saying, "The story was hollow, predictable, without tension. The humour fell flat." As masterful as the first instalment was, it was the second when Pixar found their footing and learned what makes a great film and what doesn't. One of my favourite movies to grace the planet.

I'm happy this version of Toy Story 2 never saw the light of day outside of the script and some unfinished animation. The original version sounds like it would still have been better than The Return of Jafar as well as later Disney sequels like Lilo & Stitch 2, heck I would even say it sounds more faithful to the characters than Ralph Breaks The Internet, but still would have fundamentally misunderstood its predecessor and why it was so good as a whole. The changes, alterations and additions to the script greatly improved it to the status of being on par with Toy Story 1, if not superior. Oh, and you can't forget the PS1 game. One of the best 3D platforming games released during the PS1/N64 era (5th Gen).

I like to hear stories of "meet at my place, I have a can of worms to open for the project" being a real thing. I've had to do this in projects I have worked one. Projects where we were going in one direction, and I realized another direction was more beneficial. I once had to call in a project team and an abnormal time to discuss a major change to the structure of the final build, which involved replacing a fundamental tool we had been using up to that point. And after some debate, we all agreed on the OK. And that inevitably saved the project from a LOT of future strife.
