Health & Medicine on Khan Academy: No organ quite symbolizes love like the heart. One reason may be that your heart helps you live, by moving ~5 liters (1.3 gallons) of blood through almost 100,000 kilometers (62,000 miles) of blood vessels every single minute! It has to do this all day, everyday, without ever taking a vacation! Now that is true love. Learn about how the heart works, how blood flows through the heart, where the blood goes after it leaves the heart, and what your heart is doing when it makes the sound “Lub Dub.”
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy is a nonprofit with a mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. We believe learners of all ages should have unlimited access to free educational content they can master at their own pace. We use intelligent software, deep data analytics and intuitive user interfaces to help students and teachers around the world. Our resources cover preschool through early college education, including math, biology, chemistry, physics, economics, finance, history, grammar and more. We offer free personalized SAT test prep in partnership with the test developer, the College Board. Khan Academy has been translated into dozens of languages, and 100 million people use our platform worldwide every year. omg ! This video deserves a million thumbs up for the clarity, organization, timing, and I love that I could just hear an audio with a clear deep voice and while listening to the voice I am focus on watching all what was written in front of me. I like just hearing an audio with all the step by step instructions or lectures than watching someone visually and them trying to explain everything. This is a well done video and it is perfect for me to watch without distructions what is in front of me but able to learn what this lectures all about! Wow !!! I am so impressed with the voice (calm, confident, knowledgeable , very specific or direct to the point). I could watch or listen your video over and over and over again without getting tired hearing your voice while learning a lot of stuff, because of how you explain things ! Very well done !!! Love it !!!! Thank you !!!! This helps a lot for me !

Once Hb dumps the O2, there is no oxygen present in the porphyrin moiety. The Hb is now a gun with no "bullets" and needs more bullets. As the empty gun Hb gets into the lung (specifically the alveoli), those empty guns deprived of O2 are now in a zone where there is an overwhelming ABUNDANCE of O2. The empty Hb gun gets reloaded with new bullets.

I feel stupid asking this but I need to ask to finalize and confirm my understanding...My book states..."As cells metabolize glucose and use O2, they release CO2, which increases the PO2 and H+ levels in the capillary blood. Now I think this is what you had talked about when you mentioned that when we are in an acidic environment (high H+ levels), or in the presence of a lot of CO2 then hemoglobin will "dump" its O2. Am I correct on this?

You really are an absolutely remarkable lecturer. Wouldn't you write a book of teaching principles to share with professors and teachers around the world? I think i would fit well with your social goals, too... because you could (a) use the proceeds to add to Khan Academy or (b) give the proceeds to another agency working towards the equitable distribution of knowledge using technology, etc...

It goes on to say, "Both declining blood pH (acidosis) and increasing PCO2 weaken the Hb-O2 bond. As a result, oxygen unloading is enhanced where it is most needed."So, my question is, is this because hemoglobin cannot pick-up O2 and CO2 at the same time? It's either one or the other and not both? In other words, if an RBC is dumping O2 than is it picking up CO2? And or if it's picking up O2 then is it's dumping CO2?

Allosteric Inhibition effect of the acidic enviroment is called "Bohr"-effect and it works the other way around too, meaning alkalic enviroment supports the O2-Binding of Haem(Heme). Anyway, great video as always Sal. You really know how to simplify all these complex knowledge and make it easier to understand without leaving any vital information out. Great Job!
