Presented as a part of ACSM's Brown Bag Series in Science
Hemostasis: Both Hero and Villain of the Cardiovascular System
Presenter: Paul R. Nagelkirk, Ph.D., FACSM
Director, Integrative Exercise Physiology Laboratory
Associate Professor of Exercise Science
Ball State University
Paul Nagelkirk currently serves as the Director of the Integrative Exercise Physiology Laboratory and Associate Professor of Exercise Science at Ball State University. He received his Ph.D. in Kinesiology from Michigan State University. He is a past President of the Midwest chapter of ACSM, and was recently named Fellow of the ACSM. His research interests generally focus on the influence of exercise on molecular mediators of cardiovascular diseases, with particular emphasis on blood coagulation and fibrinolysis.
Dr. Nagelkirk will be discussing how the hemostatic systems prevent blood loss in the case of injury, and how those same systems contribute to adverse events such as heart attack and stroke, and how acute exercise and regular physical activity modulate blood clotting potential.
