"Started throwing his cue at the ball, I don't like that" well hang on, Si came back to win another three frames off the back of that all-out attack, to make the game a lot tighter than it could have been. Obviously, the points made in this podcast stand as the way he ended up losing the seventeenth frame was by taking on a really difficult pot that he probably should have played safe on. But it wasn't that dissimilar from the Wu Yize comeback against Robertson, and for a while the buccaneering attacking had Xiao reeling and very likely a bit intimidated - he started missing balls that he had otherwise looked imperious over. So it's not an unreasonable strategy, certainly not exclusive to the Chinese youngsters, and probably a reasonable approach when you're down and the best part of your game is attacking. Si and Wu have both regularly pointed out in interviews that safety is the weakest part of their game and that they're trying to improve that. How long did it take Trump to learn the strategic, defensive side of the game to become an all-round player? I feel like the pundits always hold the Chinese youngsters to higher standards than, for example, their darling "young" Jack Lisowski who's 33 and still won sweet F all. Or they are measuring them up to the class of 92, who were definitely freakish, even more in terms of their winning mentality than their talent. But remember, as good as they were/are, the overall standard they had to compete with (apart from one another) was not as high as it is now, so expecting one youngster to break through and be consistently winning tournaments ahead of all the others is unrealistic and unfair.

Chinese players clearly have the overall ability .. I agree with 'angles' McManus .. they seem to lack the snooker street smarts (Ding aside). Also, the Chinese snooker community in general seems to lack the 'personalities' and 'characters' of recent and previous years which helps bring spectators and a TV audience. That's a concern for the success of TV broadcasts of the future.

Interesting discussion. I think with the financial and numerical advantage in China - and other Asian areas that the tournaments will go to such as Saudi Arabia, Dubai, etc - that it's been obvious for a long time that the sport is inevitably heading towards the main tour being Asian based and many of the winners / top 16 being Asian players. It's more a matter of when, not if. The Covid years, and the bans for match fixing for some Chinese players, slowed the progression down for a while. But it's clearly back on track again now. However it's an interesting point made about the current Chinese players lack of street wise snooker / B game / consistency. That has also probably slowed their progression, and allowed more consistent players in their 40's to still be in the top 16 for now. And also a good point about the lack of senior Chinese former professionals for the young players to currently benefit from - unlike the UK players over the years having the likes of Griffiths, Reardon, Ebdon, etc, to coach them. That will also come in time as Chinese players retire and pass their experience on.

There are over a billion Chinese. Probably the financial incentive is much greater for people from that area. So it is logical.

i agree with Stephen but i would say the only two left where players think well damn I'll probably lose is Trump or Ronnie. I think a huge factor is a lot of the Chinese players are young away from home, it must have an inadvertent effect on their drive, and also the only giant champion they have to look up to is Ding who is amazing but lets be honest, the Chinese players need someone with some spunk and personality to blow the door off and start winning some tournaments or at least make some noise. I like Si Jiahui

Why are Chinese players in a category? Are they not snooker players in their own right? “They hit the ball better, but they don’t play better.”??? Also…Stephen Lee and Joe Perry were also in the so-called “Class of 92”.

Why do commentators not really praise Judd Trump. He has already been in every major match/ achieved amazing modern day results…has improved in every aspect when was already great.. he is but a master.

Chinese players seem to lack strategic shot choice, sometimes going for the long red isn't the best shot.

Real estate prices kills Snooker. Save Snooker & Cue Sport by giving TAX EXEMPTION. We gave BINGO tax exemption in Norway. It was protected, as entertainment for the working class. These Bingo halls was able to keep afloat and operating into the last decade. Until the law that protected it, was terminated by the Real Estate lobbyists. Now their are all gone. Snooker & Pool arise from the Third Estate: The Commoners. We need Quantity & Quality. Talent is not something you can fabricate buy spending 1000£ each month on private coaches. 8 Snooker tables = 16 customers drinking soda. How the hell can you pay the rent on that income. Barry Hearn and the stars of the sport. Must all their political influence to put it into Law. Snooker stars have influence today. But it's fading. Without Tax exemption. We will not produce talents that can compete with China & Asia. Snooker will die as a mainstream sport in Europe.

What average kid in the UK can afford a grand to get started in snooker? No snooker clubs left, everything is expensive, even to practice you are paying memberships and table light time. Snooker is dying in this country.

Like most snooker fans I suspect, I watch it on TV and I’m losing interest. For me, it’s all about the personalities of Ronnie, Higgins, Williams, Murphy and so on. Once the Chinese players take over I think TV audiences will decline quickly. Already, live audiences are embarrassing, even in China.
