A great way to keep your underside warm in the hammock is to use a reflective car windshield visor (that you cover the inside of your car windshield on a hot day) as an underpad. They really work great and are quite compact. They fit the contour of the hammock perfectly and fold up nicely into your pack. I always use one in my Hennessy. I've spent nights at 0 degrees Celsius and been fine. They also keep the blood suckers from nipping you through the nylon!

great review, lots of room, I sleep with some gear inside my hammock, flash lite, Swiss army, my emergency meds, water... For heat loss, several space blankets and thermarest are a must, I cocoon myself. have the blankets outside and inside also. I have encounter mosquitoes armed with a drill that can penetrate a heavy duty vinyl tarp so, I have a double heavy duty big sleeping bag, I don't move a lot but you need some freedom. About the boots, I learned to put them in a plastic bag, close it and hang them, sometimes I put the boot/bag inside the hammock, to prevent surprises, waking up to a torrential rain flooding around you, snakes, bugs etc. for the head, make sure one side its higher and/or have some pillow made of your own gear/clothes if they are wet just wrap them in a space blanket. And those rain drops are the best sound to fall to sleep. Love it

You can get silvered bubble wrap from a lot of hardware stores, it is basically bubble wrap with a coating of mylar on each side and is used to wrap water tanks or other things that need insulating, this can be cut to fit your hammock and works really really well ;) lovely location btw, we don't have anything like that here in the uk :(

I have a Hennessy and I found that if I put the reflective blanket underneath my sleeping bag I'm nice and toasty. I found hanging it under the hammock allow's cold air between me and the reflective blanket and I feel the cold more. Beautiful place to camp tho. Wow... so pretty. ATB Louise :)

I bought the hammock (pronounces Hamm-uck in Scotland ) so bought outwell cardinal sleeping bag and 2 sheep skins to put under. Also have a light unbranded hammock to put kit back pack jacket etc and I sling that underneath the Hennessy instead of the hammock blanket setup. Will be doing a vid of my setup in the next 2-3 weeks so will let you know how I get on. Really enjoy your videos thanks

JaNee; ek weet wat jy bedoel ou swaer! I am a SA expat in Central America. I love camping and experiencing the great outdoors. Obviously we have no snow. We are in the Tropics and therefore the rainforest. But I use the same system here: Get off the ground (to avoid mud & critters) and have a top-sail to evade rain (but also to avoid dropping tarantulas, vampire bats and Tommy-Gophs - the Fleur de Lance snake). Slinging a hammock between trees with a covering sail of some sort is so much superior to a tent. Quicker set-up, better sleep quality , smaller footprint on the environment and quicker access to equipment. Also a lot safer in the boondocks. You can go as high as feel comfortable with. I've had a Hennessy Safari Deluxe over 20 years and the 1st thing I did was to get the largest rain fly I could get from them to replace the small one that came with the hammock. I also have 4 other hammocks from different companies and I replaced the rain fly's with 12 x 12 silnet rain fly's on all of them. As far as your cold backside , that is called the Frozen Butt Syndrome and the cure is a under quilt or a mattress inside the hammock or between the double layers of the hammock if you have a hammock with double bottom layers. Using a mattress I like the self inflating ones and let them inflate about half way so they will form to the hammock but still offer insulation. Insulation between you and the hammocks bottom is necessary since you compress what ever you are laying on or in ( Sleeping Bag ) , even a thin foam pad under you will help a lot.

Hennessy Hammocks do have a small tarp but it does the job. I have had one of these Hammocks for a few years now and adding it up have spent over a month sleeping in it. I have slept in it through very bad storms and have not gotten wet once.

I use an under quilt and a top quilt from Jacks R Better. Much more comfortable than pads and sleeping bags in the hammock. Many other cottage industry places make them. My regular set is good for me down to about - 5 C. I have a thicker top quilt for colder temperatures and then put both of my other quilts under. You can also use those silvered bubble wrap things they sell to put in the windshield of your car when you park in the sun for under you in the hammock. Bulky but light and cheap.

Hi. I have a -22°c Army Specifics sleeping bag and even tho its rated for temperatures so low the inner lining of the sleeping bag feels cold and in the morning you get that light cold feeling. what we use in the swiss army is a thin polar or fleece sleeping bag you put inside your main sleeping bag. with both combined you will have a warmth cocoon in the morning you will never want to get out of :)

I have the deluxe one and it really kept the rain out well. I was in an all night storm and I loved it. My only worry was widow makers. I also used a car windshield cover with a reflective surface for under my pad. Got it at the dollar store and worked well. I just need to figure out how to keep things from sliding inside.

Great vid, great review of the hammock. I can see how you'd want to get one of the bigger tarps for it - I suppose you have one by now, and probably an under-quilt as well. When you sleep in a sleeping bag, you compress the insulation beneath you and render it useless - not so easy to notice in a tent with a ground pad as the ground pad is providing insulation for you, very easy to notice in a hammock with nothing beneath you but a thin layer of Nylon and cold air

Have had my Hennessy for years. Camped in -20c. They make a winter kit which has a layer that fits under the hammock. You can use their insulation kit or reflex tec between the 2 fabric layers (or your coat). The top cover isn’t recommended above freezing. Too much humidity. I bought the larger fly and use the other one for extra room. Clip your boots on a carabiner to keep them dry and bug free.

+Cain-X In theory yes but I was trying to block/create a barrier between my underside and an icy cold wind. A compressed emergency blanket only millimeters from your clothing does not offer much, you need a void or air space between for warm air to accumulate. Thanks for the comment.

A thermarest (or any similar self inflating mattress) makes a perfect hammock liner. Super warm, and provides even more structural support to the asym shape of the hammock, therefore I find it a LOT more comfortable.

Nice presentation. Since we now have all of the fabulous modern technology, 40,000 amp external batteries and such for our device's, hiking and camping has returned with a vengeance. We stay connected to our network of family and friends, it's great! All I can say is that everyone has to experiment with their own custom set up. For what its worth, and it does make a difference as far as comfort, Hennessy design wants the zipper opening to your right. I thought it didn't make a difference, but when you fiddle with your sleep position a bit, you will see once you have the zipper to right and sleep on the diagonal (as you show) it does make a difference. There are tricks to knowing where the "head" is while in snake skins too - just check the Tube for it - essentially tie a piece of cord at the head so you know before you setup. It makes a difference... try it. Best hammock on the market. Enjoy.

I Put the Thermo blanket in side the hammock with the Matt & sleeping bag so I'm laying on it and I use another Thermo blanket on top of the bug net on the outside to reflect heat back . I been using the hennessy safari asym zip hammock.

A sleeping pad would solve your cold problem. I went that route because I had one already from my tent camping days. I have camped in my Hennessy at 30 degrees several times. I also carry a 12x12 rainfly (1 lb) that I purchased on sportsmansguide.com. I makes a nice sheltered area for the rest of my camp functions. I lightened my load by about 6 lbs when I changed to this setup. Tyvek house wrap washed in the washing machine also makes a good, really lightweight rainfly or ground cover (printing up over your head, down under a tent).

If I might suggest, you should bring a small mat you can use under your hammock to step on when getting out. You can also put your pack on it to keep dry. I use one that came with my Coleman tent!

Even better idea is to place the hammock inside the sleeping bag and have the bottom portion of the bag hanging. Bean configuration. The bean bag configuration retains the loft of the sleeping bag 360 degrees. The emergency blanket can then be used optionally under the sleeping bag to block the wind.

Without appropriate thermal barriers, it's surprising the kind of heat loss you can experience in a hammock, especially in your torso, arms, and hips. Even with a good sleeping bag and at fairly mild temperatures, i.e., the 50s, you can easily get chilled if you don't have an insulated sleeping pad. At lower temperatures, an underblanket is also important. BTW, as many learned in basic physics, the problem is not cold coming into the hammock, it's heat leaving the hammock from your body. It may seem counter intuitive, but the goal is to slow heat loss, not keep the cold out.

For anything less than 60ºF you need to add some kind of insulation underneath your hammock. An underquilt is the most widely used equipment.

yeah when sleeping in a hammock you need something under you unless it is hot and no wond. you should consider a underblanket. it is designed to be put under the hammock just like you did with that survival blanket.

Interesting approach but not suitable for my particular situation, I am 74 and although I enjoy camping, I have physical limitations. I have an 8 passenger van and can carry all of the creature comforts and as a last resort can sleep in the van if necessary. I can remember the days when I could and did enjoy "roughing it" but now I will leave that to you younger more fit adventurers and take my comfort accessories with me, like my 24 inch high inflatable queen sized bed and 8 person pop up tent. Keep up the video's though so I can reminisce about those days long ago.

Everyone has heard of a tent. Most,, like yourself, thought hanging from a tree was "stupid".Oddly enough once you do hang from a tree with the proper equipment, just as in a tent, you may never sleep on the ground again.Cost for a proper Hammock, Tarp, Over Quilt, Under Quilt, Suspension, lines, etc. is similar to a proper tent, pad, sleeping bag, ground cloth, tarp, etc....as well as similar in weight.The big difference is sleeping in a hammock is truly comfortable where as sleeping on the ground is tolerable.

Hennessy's STILL hasn't fixed their fly size!? That's why I went with a Blackbird Warbonnet with a Super Tarp. Also bought an underquiilt from Hammockgear.com, indespensible with the convective heat losses of hammocks but pricey. . Just use the foot box of the mummy bag to keep around feet and drape rest over top like a blanket once you have an underquilt. In the Warbonnet there is also a sheath of nylon to fit in a closed cell foam or Thermarest for extra protection (or by itself). I've been comfortable down to -4C so far, even just using a wool blanket over top. Better than sleeping on the ground any day.

The Blackbird is one of my favorites due to it's light weigh ( 16.8 ounces ) and space in it when hung. One great advantage for me is that no mosquito can bite me in the back as I lay in it , it's bug proof all the way around. In Florida we have lots of bugs and it is summer for most of the year.. My rain fly ( Tarp ) is one of the hammockgears Cuben fiber tarps , a little costly but it was a gift to myself.

I sleep longer and more comfortably in it than my bed at home. (thinking of putting some hooks in the wall there) It took some getting used to for me though. I think the closeness of the bug net was triggering some claustrophobia. I got over it after a couple nights. I still almost prefer it in cold weather so I don't have to worry about bugs and can leave it open. Also, since my head is lower than my feet, I'm a bit light headed in the morning for a few minutes.

If you're interested in using a hammock to camp, there are many pros and cons. In terms of comfort, while almost everyone enjoys relaxing in a camp hammock, not everyone enjoys sleeping in one overnight, especially if you tend to move around when you sleep, or like to sleep on your side or stomach.

You can't sleep comfortably with a hammock in cold weather without some kind of insulation underneath you. There are several easy solutions: put your sleeping pad inside your hammock partially inflated, make your own using reflectix(~$5USD), or buy an UQ. My suggestions are ordered from least expensive to most expensive. I use a 2 meter double layer of reflectix as far down as freezing. < $5usd HTH

i honestly cant see using this for long hikes. i do think i could stay just as warm if not warmer in them. I cant see being forced to change clothes inside of them if other hikers or backpackers are around. the other part is some places just may not have 2 trees close enough yet far enough apart. i know its hard to believe but you would be surprised.
