Henry Cavill Is Bringing us WARHAMMER Cinema!

Before the tears of fans even dried after it was announced that Henry Cavill was out as Superman; Warhammer superfan, Henry Cavill himself announced his intentions to bring us a Warhammer cinematic Universe. Here are my thoughts on it!

Problem is most isn't useable for live-action, either due to scale or due to grimness. Like Grey Knights killing their Sisters of Battle allies so they can use their blood to buff up their armor with sacred blood.

It’s going to be super expensive to make. When you’re picking an IP, this would be easily the least likely to be successful…high budget…super niche. Compare it to Last of Us on HBO, where the visuals are relatively cheap and you can spend it on the acting talent, 40k seems doomed to flop hard and cost Henry and his girlfriend a whole bunch of money. Heck most of the warhammer video games flop, and that’s your perfect audience.

Henry Cavill has become one of my favourite actors. I went into Man of Steel in the cinema not knowing a thing about Superman. I came out loving every second of it and wanting more. And Cavill did a lot of that. It goes without say that his performance is a large part of why I now enjoy the character and why I have been a huge DC fan ever since. So it pains me that he is gone and that it would seem like WB is nuking everything they spent the last 10 years building. DC has had it's troubles but I always supported it. And it has been difficult watching them fail to come up with a meaningful plan and to get their IP on track. I feel like they promised a lot of things to a lot of fans which they did not follow through on. They teased things which would never happen. They missed so many marks. These past few years, DC has done nothing but disappoint with their indecisiveness and their poor decision making. And so when they announced Cavill was gone, I was angry of course, but that anger soon turn to relief. I now have permission to stop caring. I wanted to see them bring back Affleck and Cavill, follow on the teases of Darkseid and Deathstroke etc from ZSJL and I knew it was unlikely to happen but whilst there was still hope, I was going to stick along for the ride. Now there is no hope. It looks set to reboot, and that's something I just don't have the time or energy for. DC has disappointed me so much that I have lost the love I have for it. And now I cannot even live in hope that we will get Man of Steel 2 or a Justice League 2, then I have no reason stick along. I can free myself of caring about the DCU and move on. Which is were we come to Warhammer. I'm beyond excited for this. I have loved Warhammer for many many years. I collect many armies. Space Marine, Imperial Guard, Necrons, Eldar, Tau. And then I have Rivendell, Erebor, Gondor and Mordor for Middle Earth and a Stormcast Eternals and Nighthaunts for Age of Sigmar. And as you said in the video, I've spent years wondering why they don't expand into live action. Well now they are. They have teamed up with Amazon meaning its going to have the budget and with Cavill on board, I have a lot of faith. Unlike DC who had just anyone in charge, Cavill is a fan and as a fan, he will give us what the fans want to see. I believe the reason he left the Witcher was because he didn't like that they wanted to stray from the source material. That is the sort of fan he is. He will stick to the source material, he will make products the fans actually want to see and he will make something great. And the potential is huge for this. Will they start with the Horus Heresy and move into 40k, will they adapt novels like the Gaunts Ghosts books. Will we get just Imperium or will we get films focused on the Eldar or the Tau. It's insane what could be done and I'm here for it. DC is dying and I was loosing interest anyway. But now, I have something to be excited for. I cannot wait to see what comes from this.

I feel like that’s the greatest challenge to any attempt at creating a 40k series (that’s not already tailored for fans): where do you even start? Even starting with well-known and much beloved introductory works like Eisenhorn, Ciaphas Cain, or Gaunt’s Ghosts, there’s so much that needs to be explained (especially for Eisenhorn, as the Inquisition is significantly more difficult to explain than the Imperial Guard)

The fun part about the Warhammer universe is that it has something for everyone. Boots on the ground military movie? Imperial guard. Fantasy? All of Warhammer Fantasy? Top Gun in space? We got books full of weird and cool ships to dogfight in. Horror movie a la Alien or possession storylines? Tyranids and Chaos have you covered. Epic, muli-movie long tales of betrayal and galaxy rending conflict? The entire Horus Heresy is right there.

40K is one of those universes like Star Wars where you theoretically could do absolutely everything. From the gigantic war epic of the Horus Heresy with 5 billion different characters to a story about two random humans living in a hive city showing how love can blossom even in the most decrepit and vile conditions.

It feels like Star Wars is a bit too reluctant to tap into that anything of a big wide universe full of aliens and worlds that could be explored. Too often Jedi, Storm Troopers, and Rebels on a few worlds rather than hey cool things on this other planet that doesn't involve Jedi. While Space Marines might be the cover art boys for the box sets you can read novels where Space Marines never show up.

So I've been into 40k for about a decade now, and outside of being hyped beyond belief, I feel the best place to start a cinematic warhammer universe would be either a guardsmen story or an inquisitor story. Not only because they are the best options from a budgetary perspective, but also because they are imo the easiest stories to translate onto the silver screen. Also I play Dark Angels and Necrons. The Astra Militarum (aka Imperial Guard) would be a great place to start. They are the average joes in this universe and would be great for a new viewer to follow and learn about the 40k universe through their eyes. Also, novels that focus on the Guardsmen do sell a lot. As for the Space Marines for the first movie, they should be talked about as if they're these demigods of myths and legends to help build them up. As for the enemy for the first movie, one of two would be the best, either Necrons or Tyranids. From the new viewer prospective, space robots or space bugs would be the easiest for them to accept in the crazy universe of 40k. These two factions would also be great building blocks for the next movies. Necrons and Tyranids could be enemies to anyone, in addition, Necrons could also become protagonists in the next movie as Necron novels do sell pretty good. As for Chaos or Orks, Chaos would be too much for a new viewer and Orks could give off a silly vibe. But this is what I think about the starting point for a 40k cinematic universe.

From Superman to the Golden Throne, big upgrade for Henry Cavil. He’s a big 40K fan & GW is very protective of their IP; this gives me hope that it’s going to be awesome plus him being a producer & wanting it to be close to the source material. This is amazing news for both Henry Cavill and Warhammer fans. I recently became a fan of the universe and the lore, though I am hesitant to get into the tabletop because...dear god that will get expensive fast and I already dump enough money into Magic the Gathering. But way to go for Henry for moving forward and not letting the loss of him being Superman get him down. And well...now we just get to have that same energy for Warhammer. So DC gets a loss and Warhammer gets a gain...Way to go. Also the fact that you also watch Baldermort just made me smile. He was the one that made all of this crazy Warhammer stuff more digestible and interesting for me, and I've been watching your channel for years, Jeremy. I’m pumped for this. The fact that he’s going to be executive producer hopefully means he will be a voice in the creative process that helps safeguard some of the key themes. Thing is, as touched upon in the video, the 40k universe is HUGE. You can tell almost any story you want but we all know what truly should be adapted. I am of course taking about the Ork who accidentally travelled through time to the past, and killed his past self just so he could have two copies of his favourite gun.

I played Tyranids back in the 1990s, but when 3rd ed came out, my army wasn't legal to play anymore, and so I stopped. Still enjoy the lore, though. I will also speak of enjoying lore talks with Bricky, on his youtube channel/podcast, Adeptus Ridiculous.

I think W40k is actually a good Universe for Amazon, since the Diversity Quota they have can be filled quite naturally in the Universe. Only female Space Marines are off limits, but Sororitas are even more badass :)

I listen to baldermort’s lore vigeos whilst I am driving. I had no idea what warhammer was untill I fell asleep watching random KZbin videos about 5 years ago and woke up at 2AM to a lore video talking about the Grim darkness of the future and about the Empire of Mankind and I had no idea what I was seeing but it blew me away and I’ve been pretty obsessed with it ever sense.

Until I see the trailer, I will remain skeptical. This industry never fails to disappoint. And if it succeeds, it would be a double edged sword. It will attract new people into the hobby, and consequently change it forever, and probably beyond recognition. Lore would be retconned to appeal to broader audiences, factions would be changed tremendously. Direction of the following lore and army releases might also change to appeal to new audiences. For example, if, say, one faction would be shown as awesome and interesting, they will become the main focus for the new players, they will be getting new stuff and so on. And MCU now has arguably more influence on marvel comics than marvel comics has on MCU. Will it be so very hot if media franchise based on Warhammer 40k starts to influence the original source material? It depends on the will of executives. And what happens if Amazon decides to by Games Workshop altogether? They can do it right now if they want to. Games Workshop studio may suffer the same fate many independent studios once they are incorporated into an even bigger corporation - changing beyond recognition. Look at the Star Wars, look at the LoTR, look at basically any franchise around. The future of not only TV adaptations, but also the warhammer franchise itself might be in Henry's hands now.

I mean, while you are right, I have a lot of faith on Cavil. Mainly because of how he ma aged The Witcher. He pmainly me tioned he is on-boad for the 7 seasons as long as they keep the lore right and respect the source material. And after a while... he quits. Seems to me he is a man of integrity. Now there are rumors surfacig a out hom being a "pain" to work with because he got "gamer red pilled" which sounds a lot like made up non-sense to make him the bad guy and make themselves be the victims. So my guess is, he tried to make them keep to the source material. They refused. He then refused to be a part of it. And with Warhammer, he has control ocer it. So... Im gonna risk it and be optimistic about this.

Henry Cavill has come over as one of the most passionate actors in the industry. He dives into every project he has been in. The Witcher did Cavill, a huge fan of the source material, dirty. Very happy for Cavil, the man really deserves a win. Hopefully they get enough good people together on this project that can respect the franchise and we got something truly epic on our hands. I've never played the tabletop although I have some painted titans on my shelf because I think they're so cool from a lore perspective. I imagine they will start on a human level, maybe imperial guard or arbites and work their way up. Maybe not even show space marines at all for the first season or a glimpse in the final episode.

I'm a few days late, but Games Workshop announced that they were working on a TV series adaptation for the Eisenhorn book series. If they really started working on that, that could be the entry point for Cavill - I can easily imagine him as Eisenhorn.
