Well, it seems the one thing everyone can agree on is that The Witcher: Blood Origin is absolute garbage. In fact, it basically represents everything wrong with modern entertainment. So let's take a look.

Lauren doesn’t care about the source material. This was known in 2018 when she didn’t want Ciri to be white. She also wanted Ciri to be the lead not Geralt. She blamed trolls and racists when people objected. The article is online.

Funny thing about wanting ciri as the lead all they needed was to put in the work and put a good show. If they could get to where ciri is grown up like in the games ,they could have strong lead Ciri base on the game version
@VAWM.
@VAWM. Жыл бұрын
Ciri is basically the lead in the books though. Yeah, the early short story collections focus on Geralt (and they're also my favourite Witcher stories) but once you move into the main series with Blood of Elves, the books are pretty conclusively about Ciri. She and Geralt end up on opposite sides of the world and the story largely focuses on her struggles, powers and rivalries from that point on. Geralt is still a major part of the books, and the interactions between him and his adventuring party are Sapkowski's best writing in the series imho, but I think it's wrong to say the books are definitively about him at that point.

I remember when "The Witcher" was a semi-selfcontained, grounded, slavic/scandinavian tale of regular humans who have to live together with other regular low-magic beings and magic in itself was a wonder and rarity, and the WHOLE THING DIDN'T LOOK LIKE SOME ASS-END AFTERTHOUGHT OF AN EPISODE FROM THE NEWER SEASONS OF DR.WHO WHAT THE FUCK
@Dirschau
@Dirschau Жыл бұрын
The Witcher (in books) was all about living together with different species, races, all colours and shapes. It was about tolerance (or lack of it) between humans, elves, dwarfs, magical beings etc. The stories had it all - and readers known it, makes the books so popular not only in Poland, but even internationally. Then comes netflix with its showrunner and writers, use the witcher brand and making it in their own, 2020s USA-centric version... And we know the rest.

I know nothing of Warhammer but the fact that Cavil is not just in the show but is a producer and he's genuinely passionate about the source material makes me want to try it. It could honestly be the first adaptation in the last 10 years where the show runners actually give a shit (besides Dune). Here's hoping the rest of the producers don't coordinate against Cavil because if the show is good, it will also show what fans have been saying for years that you can only make a successful adaptation IF YOU RESPECT THE SOURCE MATERIAL.

Game of thrones had diversity, there were strong male characters, strong female characters, light skin characters, black characters, disabled characters (the hound's burned face, Tyrion being a dwarf, Jamie losing his hand, Theon...), we had Brienne, a really tall/big woman who got bullied because of her height, we had gay/bisexual characters, but did it ever feel forced? no. Did it feel annoying? no. Was it the characters' only personality trait? no. That's because the story was great, and the characters were so well-written. Diversity is never a problem when it's well executed and when it's a subtle detail that doesn't change the whole direction of the story

This's spot on, plus GOT's writters didn't fulfill the need to get any representative character a "I'm the best" screen time, even to the point any distinctive character arc isn't to be found. . For example (as much spoiler-free as possible) Renly isn't interesting because he just kills every characters in his way with the left hand, while the right one is busy opening a Pepsy can then putting in to his mouth. He is interesting because...of the way he behaves, and specifically the way he interacts with other characters. . But even those simple story tricks look like flying way above the head of actual majors' movie-makers.

I would like a show all about African, Asian, South American, or Middle Eastern ancient lore. I like learning about other cultures and it would never occur to me to question that a show specifically dedicated to a specific people when travel was extremely limited would largely only contain those people. If they want to make a futuristic story where travel is extremely common, I would find it completely believable to have a cast of characters of varying races. I just want it all to be realistic and logical and I don't want to be told constantly that the only reason I want things this way is because I'm racist and misogynistic.

It hurt how much they butchered some of the characters from the book. The one that hurt me the most was the beast man from the season 2. He was my favorite character who was the first to be in the first Witcher book. Here they made him a pussy. I was so mad how they also butchered Lydia. She wasnt just any villain. You could have ethnically distinct countries, with a sprinkling of other races, from other areas, traders and whatever, but if you must have a diverse cast all in one place, here's a thought, why not have lots of the story set in port cities, or crossroads on trade routes, where the different races converge. Which usually makes for a interesting setting, for deceits, double crosses and heroism, and shady dealing in back street bars. Istanbul sort of thing, I'm not a writer or anything, but you know, it just might work visually and plot wise.

I am from Poland. I watch the very first Witcher adaptation with Polish actors (early 2000s). Back then I thought that it looked cheesy, but now I think it was the most faithful and so far the best Witcher adaptation. Just because it says production is made by Americans and has big names ( Although I think Henry Cavil was the best actor of modern series along with Jaskier, Ciri and Yennefer), does not mean good quality. What I liked about the Polish production, is that I felt immersed in the world the series has portrayed. And the Jaskier songs (voiced by Zbigniew Zamachowski) were fantastic. However it was the scene of Pavetta's rage where I felt the full magic of the show.

I agree, saw that adaptation on KZbin back when it was still available and I think it is far more convincing and faithful to the source material than any of the games, not to mention Netflix adaptations. It is easy to laugh today at practical effects in TV show from central-european country 20 years ago. Look at the western TV shows from the 90s. Michal was great as Geralt. I think anyway that short stories and novellas from early Sapkowski work are his best works, and maybe the first novel. But even from his later bloated and chaotic novels it is possible to get enough good material to have a decent show. But no one seems to want that.

@@Kamo442 I mean they are right in the idea that humans came to the world of elves and dwarfs. That's why they are called "Elder races" because they lived there before. Monsters also came TO the world (which makes sense because they just cross). Though it isn't said that there were NO monsters before since you could argue whats the difference between monster and animal? I am not sure anymore if the books also said that this conjunction introduced magic to the world in general or just to humans (since I guess the idea is that these humans came from our world). I feel like both interpretations would be fair. Just stick with one and don't mix them up like they did in the show. Only other important point is that elves from the Witcher world also traveled to another world which are then the Aen Elle

One thing that I love when it comes to fantasy and sci fi universes is a well-realised and believable world where it feels like there’s already been centuries of events that have taken place before the story has ever begun. World building is an important facet of storytelling as it can easily destroy the story, the plot and every character in it all if somebody either forgets how an economy works or what it would be like to travel over a hundred miles on feet.

I disagree. World building is important but it's secondary to a good plot. Granted, if there's poor world building, everything else must be that much better to compensate for it if you want people to like your work of fiction. But it's not THE biggest factor and a LOT can be overlooked if everything else shines. I like to use the original three Star Wars movies as an example. If you critically examine the feasibility of something like the Death Star, or whether a bunch of stone age walking teddy bears would really prove that much of a hindrance to a galaxy-spanning Empire, you can rule it all as absurd very quickly. But most people overlook those things because they're invested in the story's characters and want to see them succeed in spite of the odds stacked against them. The Witcher fails on BOTH accounts though. There was not a single character shown that I cared about and the lore behind events was a muddled mess. Things appeared to happen with no rhyme or reason behind them, nobody's motivations were clear or understandable, and overall everything had this "generic fantasy" vibe to it with little to distinguish it from the countless thousands of other stories just like it.

In terms of the “diversity” you mentioned in every geographical area, they did the same thing with The Wheel of Time. In the first episode they are in The Two Rivers, which is a majorly secluded area which rarely gets visitors and the area has an ancient history. The book even describes what a Two Rivers person looks like and describes how weird it is that one of them looks different. It’s a major plot point in the book, because obviously this character did not originally hail from the Two Rivers. However, in the show it’s just a “diverse” hodgepodge. It literally made 0 sense.

You don't have to show it to a pub full o Witcher fans in Poland, I assure you that's what we all were doing during Christmas and it was wild. In the first episode, I had to keep reminding myself that those burly bearded guys with Scottish accents are elves, not dwarfs. I also love how a bearded, Viking-looking guy (at first I thought that he is the human in that scene) at the end sees a human woman for the first time and has no idea what she is, even though the only difference between them is the shape of their ears, which wouldn't be able to see from that distance. You know, why spend time and money on design and showing the audience that they're different races when you can just shout at them instead? And I also like the point about the 1000-year war. When I was in college, I had to write a short sci-fi story for the final exam in my creative writing class, and I put there a throw-away line about two races being at war for a thousand years and the professor a bit sarcastically pointed out to me that that's a bit long time to be at war. Boy oh boy, if she only knew that people are paid good money by Netflix for writing shit like that. The dialogues were great too - I like how in one episode the guy with cleavers says that terribly cheesy line about thinking that he was done with killing, but the killing wasn't done with him, and the writers must have really loved it and thought it was the greatest line since Clint Eastwood's "Go ahead, make my day", because the narrator uses the same phrase about the dwarf girl and the elves ten minutes later. Speaking of, I love how they allude to slavery in the real world by adding the line about elves being responsible for their ancestors' crimes against the dwarves. White guilt much? Also, I wonder how many reshoots there were since that bug monster from episode 3 looked pretty good, but the main beast seemed like something taken out of Dinotopia. Or maybe they just wanted to honor the infamous golden dragon from the Polish version of the Witcher from 2001.

Honestly the "thousand years war" is not so far-fetched. Reconquista is counted as a singular war, that lasted 781. Not that far from 1000. That said, it's more like series of conflicts. As which, 1000 years war is quite possible. Also, a war doesn't have to actively consist of military actions and constant killing and destroying. For example North and South Korea are at war since 1945. The war is at total standstill (as far as I know), and you'll only experience it by high military security at the border. Being anywhere else in South Korea you'd think the country is at peace. While there are peace talks going on, it would be possible to create plausible conflict that would go on for thousand(s) of years with little to no battle. Especially in fantasy/sci-fi setting where creatures might live very long, or distances might be absurd, or other factors are at play. With all that said I'm not protecting the Blood Origin series. The war presented there is just plain stupid. Someone just wrote 1000 because it "sounded cool", without considering practical implications as above.

If anything, I think Mr. Cavill is probably more sad than angry about the whole situation. No matter what he plays, he brings his A game. Witcher, Superman, Mission Impossible, hell even the Count of Monte Cristo. The guy just seems to love good storytelling and wants to give it his all. And honestly, that's more than any of us could want out of a series anymore. Even if the story is average, if you can tell a lot of love went into it, you can appreciate it. So yeah, Henry probably just wants a good show just as much as any of his fans. Edit: I mean seriously, how does a company that made such a kickass adaptation of a game like Castlevania, flop so darn hard on everything else? Issac is a great example. Hes not from Europe and showing bits of his backstory in desert regions where hes from made it make sense and didnt give it a second thought. Still mad they ended at season 4 and that the two storylines didnt cross back over by the end.

My wife and I felt lukewarm about the first season of the Witcher and we were pleasantly surprised by Season 2. We went into Season 3 excited, believing that momentum and learned lessons would result in further improvement. We were dead wrong. We couldn't even get past the first two episodes. The primary issue in those episodes is that Anya Chalotra (Yennifer) and Freya Allan (ciri) are black holes of charisma, and fail to sell any of the few emotions the script trusts them with having. Freya looks 10 years older than she really is, and her attempt to portray a 15-17 year old is hideous. The writing was terrible, the quips unfunny, the plot unengaging, and Jaskeir is a void of likable attributes. We basically endured every scene without Henry Cavill just so we can make it to the next scene with Henry Cavill. His departure from the show will leave nothing of value remaining. I think they should recast the show, replace all executives and creative talent, except costuming and CGI, and reboot this turn. Season 2 demonstrated potential.

I genuinely hope everything I've read about Henry Cavill is true, because the story I heard says he became the ultimate "toxic gamer", constantly bringing up issues about the source material, swearing off romance scenes and basically becoming super based. It genuinely sounds too good to be true.

It was written as twitter post, then soon deleted, as well as account, overall main problem is that theyre really trying from get go to put Witcher as not main point in story, but both girls as main point of series and add additional nudity or romance scenes that were not in books just to make Witcher be naked more, if we reverse roles and try make a female actor to be more nude and more in romantic scenes just for views, as its not in not in source material at all it would look a lot worse. Additional they cut a lot of Witcher scenes and words he said just to have more of other actors in it.

The woman who originally posted that later retracted, and some of the claims made were very, very obviously not like Cavill, so I honestly do not believe a word of that. However, if by "toxic" they mean "will keep asking to make changes in favour a version closer to the source material", then yes, that applies.

Your point on ethnicities and sense of geography is spot on. Take Game of Thrones for example. From the North? You have a rugged look with a thick northern British accent. The Reach? You look very clean and well kept and have a typical “Sophisticated” British accent. Dorne? Spanish. Braavos? SE Europe. Free Cities? Middle Eastern. You should be able to simply look at the characters in a scene and tell exactly where they are in the story.

Exactly. GOT is a good example. Because architecture, costumes, language / accent matter. Collectively they make up a big part of the culture of the place / country or people! In a medieval setting particularly, since in medieval times people could from one look tell if someone is from Baghdad, Beijing or Paris! Even in antiquities, a Gallic warrior doesn’t look and is not expected to look like a Roman legionary! Each had his own outfit, weapons, armor, etc., Because each evolved in different environment and adopted the arms that best serve their respective fighting styles and environment, etc. These woke modern shows ignore all these universal historical human facts which makes them tough to watch and follow.

Cavil was one of the only reasons I even started watching the show, he's fantastic in it. Every scene you can tell how much passion and love he has for the source material, but even with him I STILL couldn't get through the second season. Looking forward to 40k Henry! I remember some historian on Twitter DEFENDING "diverse" cultures in medieval society. Yes, everyone was so diverse and lived in perfect harmony with one another. There was no cultural clashes, no slavery, no racism, everyone got along, despite the fact, had they actually existed, they would have intermarried to the point there's be no difference between them now.

@@OldUKAds whatever else aside, it is well known that henry cavill is actually a huge fan of the witcher source material/games on his own time, and it's been pretty well documented that during the making of the witcher series he was constantly at odds with the showrunners to get the portrayal of the witcher character to reflect the source material, despite their protests.
