I have a special memory of being behind a good friend who had just stepped on a brush pile. A cotton tail rabbit squirted out of other side and Fred immediately fired an missed. In one smooth motion he ejected the spent casing and loaded another before firing a second shot. The part I have never forgotten is seeing that ejected casing arcing over Fred’s right shoulder followed by a smoke trail. That was indeed one pretty picture!

Nice. I got my Topper .410 when I was 8 also. It was my Dads when he was growing up. A few years later my Mom got me a 20ga Topper for Christmas and about 10 years ago when my Grandfather passed I got his Topper 12ga so Im keeping my eyes peeled for a 16ga Topper to complete the set. I love those single shots. Have brought home alot of game home with those. It taught me to make my shots count and I even have used the .410 and 20ga to shoot skeet with.👍

Henry has really picked up the slack with single shot shotguns after H&R/NEF went under. They've also taken over the .30-30 lever action rifle market with the semi-demise of Marlin. We'll see how Ruger resurects it. Henry is proving they make quality platforms that are becoming more popular each day. I will be adding one to my own arsenal very soon. I just wish Marlin and H&R/NEF were still around because you hate to see any arms company go under and those were quality manufacturers too.

@@mlbowen6476They did. Savage bought all the machinery and rights to produce the NEF single shot shotgun. They don't produce them in America unfortunately. The shipped all the production machinery to China, tweaked the design somewhat, and produce them there. They sell them un the U.S as the Stevens 301. Its actually a really good gun. The finish isn't as fancy as the old NEF produced guns, but they have removable chokes and an improved forend removal system.

From what I understand, when Remington dumped H&R, the tooling was scrapped as well. Remington never really wanted to build working man priced lever guns or budget singles. They wanted those brands gone. That said, I use the old H&R's successfully for hunting and I'm not handicapped in any way by just having one round at a time. It'd be nice if Henry made a plain jane working man priced something, but that's not their way of doing things, and that's ok. At least they're not cutting corners like the corporate owned manufacturers

I still have a Winchester model 37A in 12 gauge with a 30" barrel, 3" chamber and full choke and a brass bead sight. I bought it second hand around 1974 and have taken many rabbits with it. I took it to a trap shoot which got me into clay shooting. It still functions well although I don't really use it these days. I kind of kept it for sentimental reasons as it's the first firearm I ever purchased. Cheers from Australia.

The old single shot may be slower to load ins some cases but it takes longer to reload a pump after the tube is empty that it does a single single shot. You also have the advantage of locating your targets easier while reloading so you don't waste you limited amount of ammo. Just something for most folks to mull over.

Henry Firearms has a single shot turkey shotgun with iron sights. It comes with the turkey choke (probably X-Full). But you can use Remington style choke tubes in it. With the iron sights, you can use the smooth bore turkey gun for deer with slugs using the improved cylinder bore. And with the other chokes you can hunt other small game with the bird shot. Buckshot and regular shot would perform better depending upon the choke selected. The single shot slug gun is mostly for deer, bear, and hogs with slugs. For someone wanting to hunt small game, birds, turkey and deer (and on a limited budget) I would go with Henry's turkey gun. Great video by the way.

You may be able to shoot birdshot or buckshot out of this rig but it is not recommended. It will pattern horribly and it has little to do with not having a choke. The rifling will spread the shot out due to the rotation and centripetal force. It's is like shooting birdshot shell out of a 22lr rifle and is the exact reason why Henry has a smooth bore 22lr called the Garden Gun. I would be curious how well it groups at 100 yards using a scope.

Love the single barrels. I have one of each: 1898 Forehand Arms 12 gauge 30" barrel: H&R 16 and 20 gauges. Bought the H & R's new for around 100 dollars apiece in 1992. Purists will call them junkers but they can be fired very quickly. With 2 (or 3) shells in the left palm and another 2 in the mouth/teeth I can blast off 5 or 6 shots in no time at all. I have an old (essentially new) Winchester model 1912 16 gauge pump that can be slam fired and which holds 7 shells. Got that from an estate of a collector for doing some legal work around 1985. Turns out to be from 1977. Still kicking though. Grabbed one of those stock pouches that holds a nice shell count, and makes it slot easier to load on the fly.

That’s a nice looking shotgun and I’ve been looking for something like that I didn’t know they made one like that I probably will get one because I have a lot of fun playing around with some custom slugs. Not everything have to have high capacity and be made out of plastic. Thanks for doing this video.

I have a little .410 single barrel, break action. I've taken it out to some shoot arounds and of course it gets the usual derisive comments of being such a cute little gun when you first pull it out. But when you hand it around to people a big ole' smile breaks out on their face when they start to shoot it. Something about the whole tactile experience of breaking the whole gun open, and cocking that hammer and then the shell popping out.

I am 59. Ive only used a new England arms single shot 12 gauge slug gun for deer in Illinois. Honestly they used to laugh at me years ago. Till everyone realized how accurate it is. And i rarely needed more than one shot with that gun. But i could get two off just as fast as a pump shot gun. Three was just a little slower but not by much. At the range 135 yard paper plate was a easy hit.

Love single shot single barrel shotguns, not only for being the first firearm I shot, but is the most hidden firearm that roam in the Ol' West, a lot of Shotgun Riding of stagecoachs have this little one instead the double barrel one, and was one of the cheapest but robust firearms any folk can buy on those days for home protection or cowboy/hunting/trapper jobs so is very wrong that most westerns don't put on screen this common gun of those eras, even the U.S. Army of the frontier (and Phillipines) have those for foraging

What I would like is a kit that included a break action 12 gauge with screw in chokes AND a matching rifled slug barrel. That would be ideal.

Single shot shotguns are just fine if you are fighting off those slow shuffling Classic Old School Zombies. However if you are going up against a horde of those Hyper Fast Zombies you are going to need an AA-12 Semi Auto Shotgun with fifty 32 round drums.

you need to mention the materials the gun is made from, like the "plastic looking" breach lever, at the price I'd like to see a case-hardened lever, also I'd like to see a camo stock, and a 10 GA version should be in the mix, that along with cut shells would blow a grizzly in half!

I own a nice old AYA Cosmos that was obviously nicely shortened by a gunsmith, to 24 inches many years ago.... the legal minimum here in the UK, before it has to go on a firearms license. It is now cylinder bore, but still can smash clays at reasonable ranges....which amazed me!! Its a great fun gun to shoot, has elegant lines and is really useful in the woods. I really do like the look of the Henry, but also wonder what the duribility of that take down pin will be long term, before it starts to become loose and falls out! Many older designs have a full hinge pin, which can be tightened, and a clip on and off fore end, to remove the barrel. The pin is very convenient in one way, but seems a weak link in the design for long term reliability.....

My very first firearm was an H&R Topper 12 gauge 27 1/2" full choke purchased with paper route money at Coast to Coast for 60 bucks in 1982. Was always bummed I sold it. Going down the ol' nostalgia trail, I recently replaced it with a 1987 NEF Pardner in the same configuration. Fitted a Handi Rifle monte carlo stock including factory recoil pad and 1 1/3 lb removable weight found on Ebay. In the process of drilling and tapping for an EGW Picatinny scope rail. (same mount that fits the Henry, btw) It's going to get a Vortex Venom red dot and a host of Chazsel barrel inserts for a truly Handy "Handi Rifle". Can't wait to take it shooting clays with my buddy that's an east coast transplant and shoot against him with his high end over/unders just to see his expression. 🤔

At long last, a Henry product I MIGHT be interested in IF it came in a package similar to old H&R "Handi" configuration that contained .410, .20, and 12 gauge barrels along with .30-30 .444 Marlin and .45-70 Government barrels. Love the ejector by the way! Not crazy about the iron signs Henry came up with though.

Love that tacoma regular cab short bed. I see there's screw holes to mount a rail. It would be cool to toss a little 4x on there or something. Would have been nice if you tested out some sabot slugs. That's where these rifled slug guns really shine IMO. The Hornady SST sabot slugs and the Brenneke Topas sabot slugs are fantastic out of a rifled barrel. Ideal for shotgun only hunting areas because the slugs seriously approach rifle accuracy and I'm not just saying that. 300gr projectile that's really flat shooting out to 200 yards.

I had an H&R 20 gauge when I was a kid. I went on hikes all through the surrounding ranchland where we lived. It got sold later after I joined the USAF and couldn't take it with me to my first duty station. Wish I still had it. I wanted one of these Henry shotguns. The price wasn't even the factor, though, it was the lack of availability. Just couldn't find one. Had to settle for a Turkish double.

I have a Rossi, single shot , rifled barrel slug gun I bought in 2004. It is deadly accurate at 100 yards. Recently my County has opted for allowing use of Rifles. So, the slug gun has been retired unless I should ever hunt the next County to the east. I guarantee had they not allowed use of rifles, I'd be in the market for this Henry. The rifle I use, by the way is a Henry H009 30 30. Hahaha
