Y'know, I recall this being pointed out in another review - there's a stark contrast between how the crash in "The Flying Kipper" is portrayed. The RWS version is very much played for laughs when you think about it. The goods train's crew are literally propelled out of the brakevan, Henry's driver gets stuck rather comedically and we have the little skit involving the cup of cocoa that is very much on par with the later "Just look what you've done to our breakfast!". The TVS version is played DEATHLY SERIOUS! The dramatic music that fades in when it's said the crew got out just in time, implying it could have been more serious if they hadn't, cuts out the moment Henry crashes into the brakevan and doesn't come back until the cut to the following morning. No music, no narration, no quips - just the sound of Henry dramatically derailing.

I'm guessing you're referring to The Unlucky Tug's review. My only concern about the TV series version is that it's said "They (the driver and fireman) got out just in time," but what about the guard??

Thank you for preserving these videos, It sucks that the original creator, Jeffery Kirtsch had to take them down since this was the closet thing to a book vs, movie in the Thomas series. Imo this adaptation is such a big contrast to gordon the big engine while in Gordon's book I found the adaptation worse due to how they pushed back leaves and paint pots and Queens I found what they did with the henry book adaptation to be an improvement instead First off percy and the trousers is so out of place that it easily worked better as a standalone season 3 episode Gordon's whistle and Henry's sneeze where like the first two james stories where they were short enough to be combined into an episode that flows nicely Flying kipper was so much better on TV I felt this was a crash not to be played for laughs considering Henry's fate at the time was uncertain due to the coal issue compared to thomas comes to breakfast which is just another big oof day for thomas

Fun Fact: “Awdry was accused of being a racist due to the last story in this book. Originally he described the boys running away as black as The N Word. This caused controversy from the 1960s onwards, as black people were starting to be accepted by white people more and thus Awdry was accused of being a racist due to the word going out of fashion being used in his book. So Awdry was forced to change it to as “As black as soot”

Illustration error on Dalby's part - if you examine how Dalby draws Henry before The Flying Kipper, you'll see that Henry goes through several different appearances, sometimes within the same story. Henry's rebuild into a 5MT Black Five, i.e. a real-life locomotive (as opposed to a locomotive resembling a C1 Atlantic but not quite) at the end of The Flying Kipper was Awdry's way of forcing Dalby to be consistent - he was probably growing tired of children sending him letters asking why Henry looked different all the time.

Another difference between the story Henry's Sneeze and the episode Whistles and Sneezes, is the fact that there's a scene in the episode when Henry's driver is showed off talking, he has black soot and dirt on his cheeks where as in the book it doesn't even show that at all (you showed that off already but surprisingly you didn't say it I wonder why).

3:42 how was that allowed to happen? Was it under the control of a signalbox? How was the signalman able to clear the signals if the points were set into the siding? Again a major breach of signalling protocol
@TheBritFromOz0083 жыл бұрын
The narration in both sources says that "the signal should have been set at "Danger", but snow had forced it down". So the signalman was probably aware the points were frozen and had set the home signal to danger and the distant to caution, but likely had no way of knowing that a wrong-side failure (the industry term for when equipment failure causes a signal to show "clear" or "caution" when it should be at "danger/ stop") had occurred until Henry went into the siding. And if he was aware the home signal had failed and was in the "clear" position, he likely realised too late to warn Henry's crew. To be honest, I'm surprised that if Henry hit the points to the siding at mainline speed, that wasn't what derailed him.
