Out of all his wives, Anne of Cleve got the best deal when Henry divorced her: 1.) He gave her an estate and an allowance so she doesn't have to go home in shame 2.) she was allowed to attend celebrations and parties and visit him and his children 3.) Was practically made his honorary "sister" if not his ex-wife 4.) Got to keep her head 5.) And she outlived all of his other five wives

Apparently according to a comment on the SIX Musical, Anne of Cleves wasn't actually ugly and Henry actually found her attractive: they said that Henry wanted to surprise her by dressing as a lowly servant but when he approached her she dismissed him not knowing he was her future husband. Because of this humiliation, Henry sought out to divorce her. Anne actually lived longer than than Catherine Parr and was German.

Anne of Cleves actually made out quite well on her brief marriage to Henry, as with the example of his first two wives she easily agreed to the divorce, and thus retained his favor, with Henry calling her "our beloved sister" afterwards. She actually ended up living longer than Catherine Parr, and even attended Mary's coronation, and probably would have been at Elizabeth's if she'd lived to see it.

Interesting facts I learned whilst studying the Tudors in school was that Anne of Cleves, after the divorce, became the wealthiest woman in England because Henry felt bad for Anne and thus allowed her to keep all of her jewelry and royal possessions from being Queen in order to furnish Richmond Palace and Bletchingly Manor to which she was given by Henry after the divorce. All of this on top of a large annual income from the crown, even later being given Hever Castle, the former home of Anne Boleyn. Finally she gained the status of The Kings "Sister". Definitely had it best when compared to his other wives. Great video and keep up the amazing content!

After Jane Seymour died, Henry's entourage did have a hard time finding a new wife for him. By then, every noblewoman in Europe had already heard of how badly the other wives had been treated and wanted nothing to do with it. Christina of Milan was even reported to have said something along the lines of "if I had two heads, one would be at the king's disposal!". Speaking of Anne of Cleves, there's a lot to say about her and all the misconceptions about her. A channel called Reading The Past has made a video about it and I highly recommend it.

_"Was it the War of the Roses that Game of Thrones was inspired by?"_ Yes. Though there were various influences in Martin's work from British history, and history more generally, the tie ins to the WOTR are undeniable. _"Except the Enlightenment hasn't happened yet."_ The Renaissance: *Am I a joke to you?* _"What's the age difference when Henry and Catherine of Aragon got married?"_ She was six years his elder. I like how the Pope was being described as "under the thumb" of Charles and not "under siege" by Charles as his army sacked Rome in 1527 and forced the Pope into literal hiding, so he couldn't have helped Henry even if he wanted to at the time, lol. _"Why couldn't the Pope annul Henry's marriage like all the others?"_ Annulments were only offered if there was no proof of the consummation of the marriage, or if the Pope was feeling very generous. But since he wasn't and Henry had a daughter by Catherine, they had very obviously consummated their marriage making it legitimate and meaning there was no legal ground for a divorce whatsoever. _"You gotta wonder where his theological beliefs were at during this time."_ Henry was a committed Catholic until the day he did. He never gave up one belief from his childhood to death, save the supremacy of the Papacy and perhaps the position of Bishops. But he was committed to the theology of the Catholic Church until the day he died, and regarded protestants who did not believe in Transubstantiation just as bad as Catholics who refused to accept him as their spiritual head.

All correct apart from your point about the Enlightenment. The Renaissance and the Enlightenment were two completely separate periods of Europe. Renaissance from 1300-1600 and the Enlightenment from 1800-1850. Periods of Europe are: Roman: 0-400 Dark Ages: 400-1300 Renaissance: 1300-1600 Reformation: 1600-1700 Enlightenment: 1700-1750 Industrial Revolution: 1750-1850 Imperialism: 1850-1900 Modern: 1900-Present I don’t know why you would ever mix up the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, considering they were two completely different things.

With Aragon, though one kingdom in Spain, Catherine was a princess of a technical Spain (but it had not been unified and named Spain yet, that would happen during Catherine's nephew, Charles the Emperor's reign.) Spain was dynastically unified through Catherine's parents. Her father, Ferdinand, was King of Aragon, Valencia, Majorca and Barcelona whilst her mother, Isabella, was Queen of Castile and León. Anne wasn't only a protestant, she's usually credited with introducing Henry to the Protestant theology he used to set up his own church. and the reason she hated Wolsey is because Wolsey broke up her engagement her first love(possibly at Henry's instigation). never mind the fact that Wolsey didn't help his case with his ultra lavish lifetstyle that was even more swanky than Henry's. there's also some fairly strong evidence that the reason Anne held out against Henry wasn't because of ambition, but because she was not attracted to him and did everything she could up to and including running away from Court back to her family home to discourage his interest. it's only when Henry began talking marriage, that she saw the opportunity to spread the reforemed religion from his side, that she came around to the idea of a relationship with him.

The way of marrying people off in Feudal times kinda reminds me of hostage taking in the Hellenic world. It wasn’t really hostage taking as much as it was, giving a child or person from one or either side, to basically secure peace between the two. It happened to Pyrrhus of Epirus, who had a hell of a life ahead of him which involved attempting to create an Epirote empire by taking over Italy and trying to smash the Romans, which he actually potentially could’ve. The problem with Pyrrhus was is that he wasn’t very focused or concentrated, he was a great general and one of the greatest warriors of his time who could just literally jump into a group or Spartans and just kick their ass up and down the curb without breaking a sweat. Literally the best way to find where Pyrrhus was, was to go to the absolute thick and worst of the fighting. That’s where you’d find Pyrrhus just kicking ass all day. He was probably a better warrior then Alexander because despite Alexander’s feats, we don’t get nearly as much description of his martial prowess then we do Pyrrhus. But his problem was is three things. 1. He wasn’t very concentrated or focused, there are quite a few cases where there’s the potential that if he just, stuck with it and focused on the task at hand, he potentially would’ve won like with Rome but hey! Sicily sounds exciting. 2. His allies were absolutely useless, the best examples were the Teranteens (I know I’ve butchered that), who despite being at war with the Romans were pretty chill about the whole thing, and were much more inclined in their own minds to just relax, eat and drink. When Pyrrhus came around and saw that 1. He didn’t have his 350,000 men as promised although he knew he wouldn’t get half of that, but he was just hoping for something. 2. The Teranteens thought that Pyrrhus would just do the work for them. Pyrrhus began whipping the Teranteens into shape and conscripting them into his army, apparently they had good cavalry but still, the Teranteens realising that Pyrrhus wasn’t just gonna do it all for them and was actually making them do something, a lot of them just up and left considering it slavery that they weren’t allowed to do what they wanted, when they wanted. 3. By the time he returned to Greece which was also especially fuelled by what the Greeks and Epirotes thought of him, he, much like Alexander, kinda fell in love of his own legend and started doing more and more reckless and frankly stupid things to feed his own ego and belief in he and his army’s invincibility. Which led to his downfall when he went over to siege Sparta which much like Rome he could’ve taken of he didn’t go ‘oh! Something involving me happened in Argos, let’s go gang!’. His faith in his army was also a bit overblown, because he didn’t have his veteran Epirotes and Macedonians back in the Italian campaigns, who unlike Alexander never once tried to go against him. His troops loved him but they weren’t his Veterans, not that they were bad soldiers though and in the field Pyrrhus was basically still undefeated due to his daring ness and still very capable strategic mind. Anyway what was I saying? Oh yeah, hostage taking in the Hellenic world was about giving a child or person to one or either side, which would effectively secure peace because if you attack me I can totally kill your beloved son. But it was also a political tool because they were treated very much like honoured guests and spent a lot of time around the royals, to get good relations in the future, potentially a marriage and basically secure an unofficial or official alliance. Or at least I think that’s how it went, be free to correct me.

9:00 - Now i'm not sure if there was a biblical misunderstanding from Oversimplified or if that's what his source was implying about how people interpreted that verse at the time, but that verse is taken out of context. What Leviticus 20:21 says about not marrying or sleeping with the wife of one's brother applies to the living addressing adultery. That verse says WIFE, NOT widow and therefore NOT for the dead. That's why there's another verse in Deuteronomy 25:5 which seems to contradict the earlier verse, but actually makes sense because if the eldest brother dies without producing an heir, it's up to the next brother to keep the family name going. It also has more to do with keeping property and ownership of land during the times of ancient Israel and surely medieval Europe as well.

I apologize if this HUGE comment sounds like i'm making a fuss. What i'm really trying to get to is that with this information in mind, doesn't that verse actually ruin Henry's case for divorce? - 21:30
@ladylunaginaofgames40
@ladylunaginaofgames40 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's all in the interpretation and translation at the time. The Leviticus stated in 18:16 "You mustn't have relations with the wife of your brother" while 20:21 stated that doing so will lead to childlessness. It's possible that Deuteronomy wasn't available in England at the time to counterargue this, but basically, Henry's claim was because he has taken a woman who was married to his brother and therefore must have slept with his brother, God refused to give them a male heir. Cathrine's counterargument was that Arthur died before they can consummate their marriage, therefore she is still technically a virgin and therefore does not bear the taint of Arthur.
@ladylunaginaofgames40
@ladylunaginaofgames40 4 жыл бұрын
@@ytuberrRolid397 Also, the Deuteronomy wasn't added until either Henry's bible translation or King James Translation. The important part was that the Deuteronomy wasn't CATHOLIC cannon at the time.
