The first point I think is the most important. Being warm and dry with the right gear is essential. A lens cloth though does help also!

A hiking umbrella to keep the rain off the lens is my tip. Wiping with a cloth stops working after a while - as you so ably demonstrated by smearing the video cam's lens! :-) I do use a rain cover but not as often as I should but my Olympus has never failed me yet! I loved that Pike o' Blisco shot.

I like shooting in the rain too. Here is some tips I use. 1) Avoid facing directly into the wind if you can. No doubt this limits your options but I would consider this if the rain and/or wind is strong. 2) Set your shutter on a five second timer. Wipe the lens gently for about two seconds and allow the remaining time the camera to settle. 3) Im open to correction on this one. Use a wider aperture. This comes from my days photographing at motorsport events behind the fence and trying to reduce its visibility. Using a wider aperture will help to reduce the visibility of rain drops on the lens. 4) I would advise using a lens hood when the wind and rain is coming from the side but as you've said its entirely personal. 5) Microfiber cloths are probably the best but I find the cleaning cloths that come with glasses are also good.

About to do Scafell Pike this coming weekend and although the weather is set fair my daughter and I are going equipped for every eventuality, warm and dry is a must. Hopefully some nice images will be shot and if not the experience will good enough for us both. Great images and tips 👍

So glad to see a landscape photographer from youtube actually out in the rain, making the most of the conditions. And in the Lakes to boot. One thing I've found, is to take a few moments to stand and absorb the scene. Sometimes in new locations the excitement can get the better of me and taking a couple of minutes helps me focus on the composition.

Beautiful shots. Of the one you showed two of, I actually like the first better, there was something very mysterious about the clouds and fog in that one. I love shooting landscapes in rainy weather though outside of the monsoon, I don't get much of it in my area. My camera, a Canon 5d mark ii is weather proof, but I don't think my favorite landscape lens, a Tamron 28-75mm f2.8, is. I really need to invest in one of those water proof camera covers as I've been guilty more than once of putting my favorite lens at risk.

Glad you mentioned the rain cover Henry. Have just ordered one. All my lenses aren't water proof, and while I'm working on getting at least one that is, this will give me a bit of latitude with what I have. And Tasmania can be a little moist at times and I don't want to have to give up my Tokina ATX 12~28f4 just yet. So this will be useful. As usual, an enjoyable video with great pics, a useful tip, and a sheep. Can't ask for more than that.

Great video. I am a real bugger when it comes to being grumpy in the rain. I really need to force myself to get out when the conditions are not so great, rather than rolling over in the car and going back to kip! Also, those little camera rain jackets are worth their weight in gold, stops the inside of your camera bag getting damp which, when out for a few days, can be a huge thing.

Another great video, Henry! You got some great pictures again in these conditions! I personally love the image at 9:00! I also use a rain cover for my camera when it's really bad, mine is completely transparent, which is nice, but it's a pain to put on. Once it's on, it's working fine. And I do use a lens hood. What makes it more trouble than it's worth for you? I find them so easy to use!
@andrewwordsworth5364 Жыл бұрын
Lens hood work great, but the trouble starts when trying to rotate your Polarizing filter With one attached, after I put a smudge on the filter accidentally I learned it’s easier to keep it off, has I needed to clean it from the filter or get it off in editing software

Thanks so much Henry for your excellent videos, your generosity in sharing your experience and expertise, and of course your vital enthusiasm. I have one question about shooting on rainy days; how to avoid specs and streaks of falling rain drops in your picture? So many 'rainy days' videos, and all the shots dont have the streaks or spots of falling rain drops. How?

Really nice shots and good points. One I'd add is, if you can catch a storm before it hits -- particularly if the sky is otherwise (somewhat) clear -- that's mucho dramatic. Where I live, in the deep south USA, our rain / storms are usually embedded in overcast so that's rarely possible, but when there's a big storm in an otherwise clear sky, wow! Also, hate to say it, but I'll go for a Vegemite photo over a Marmite photo. Sorry, mate... 🙂

I've thought about getting a rain cover for the camera, but honestly, rainy days and Mondays always get me down. There's just no inspiration for it. Also we don't get any type of mist or fog with it over here in New England. When it rains, everything is just grey. The best you can hope for is a rainbow afterwards.

I hate the rain! I'm a glasses wear and there's nowt worse than misted up and blurry glasses. can't see a damned thing without them so going out in the rain is an absolute pain in the posterior for me. And I know I can adjust my diopter but that doesn't help me compose a scene and knowing me if I put my glasses somewhere other than my face I'd lose them, stand on them or break them some other way.

That rain cover looks like it would be a PITA. That’s why I’ve never bought one. I’ve heard of people using a regular old shower cap which would probably be easier to deal with. These are just observations though. I have no real world experience.
