I have had 3 bad HE episodes. It is so scary. The first one was frightening, as I did not know what was going on. I could not figure out how to put my watch on my wrists. In addition, I could not figure out how to put my earplugs to my cell. I tried to insert the earplugs into the phone. Obviously, it did not work at all. I thought it was a side effect of my psych meds, however, it was not. So, I was taken to an outpatient mental health facility. I also had these what I thought was blood running down my chin. So, when I got there, they said this is NOT a psychiatry or psychological. They said it was a medical emergency and to get to the ER post haste. So, I go there and I definitely have HE. So, I end up staying there for 3 or 4 days.

My beautiful mother suffered this, nafld. Missed by her gp until we rushed her to ED Dept. Her gp actually gave her more toxic drugs, It was avoidable and a cruel and painful way to die. She didn't deserve it. Rest in peace, my darling. Beni Nero Paola 1937-2018. 🕊️❤️

I'm very sorry to hear that. What measures, medications, or supplements are you taking to prevent another episode of HE?

I appreciate the presentation. However, the big question does other medical Professionals know this? I am certain that they do not. My brother who we knew based on his symptoms that he had cirrhosis with extended abdomen. He was hospitalized with constant blood work, ultrasounds, and giving him lactulose with diuretic in which and his cognitive ability slowing down daily. No diagnosis of HE was even considered, no MRI on the abdomen, no additional treatment. He went back home to CA where the medical care was worse. Eventually with my other brother as his caregiver, he was hospitalized where in 2 weeks' time with same treatment, he was diagnosed with last stages of liver failure and put in hospice. He died one day later. This is where all the information that is available to treat this does not amount to nothing without medical professionals and I mean physicians, specialists, and even nurses understanding that every day with this condition is critical to the surviving this horrible condition. With a culture of drug and alcohol abuse out of control, this condition will be on the rise and prevalent. Lets see how quickly the medical profession will jump on early treatment rather scratching their head while their patient is dying and emotionally killing their loved ones. The medical profession has a lot to answer for as a whole regarding so many issues.

Agree , my mother died because of this, she had routinely seen her gp for twenty years with symptoms and he gave her more toxic drugs. He dismissed blood work which was flagged as 'age related'. My mother was diligent in her notes and her questions were dismissed because she was from an 'expressive culture' she was the most loving positive person. This form of stereotypical racism is infuriating. When she became confused and her hands started fluttering we rushed her to the ED. Where she was immediately diagnosed. When I confronted the Gp he dismissed the result with 'it wasn't on his radar ', for twenty years? He looked at all the symptoms as individual rather than connected all the while taking her money and killing her with toxic sulfur, panadene and morphine in the mix.

Why would they do an MRI? Liver biopsy is the gold standard to diagnose cirrhosis.. Any smart physician will know that once cirrhosis is diagnosed, everything will start to deteriorate and its time to start preventive measures. Alcohol is a poison anyways and even a sip of it should not be tolerated.

My GP turned me away for being too late for the in-between ER visits appointment… she would have seen my face and known I needed hospitalization immediately-or would she have??? I was on a psych floor at the major hospital that got me THE NEXT DAY. Still NO DIAGNOSIS. Just “an alcoholic with ESLD and ascites…” but I hadn’t had alcohol for eight months by this time. Please please lord educate the doctors and nurses It was under treated HE, it was soooooo bad and even the psychiatrist just put “psychosis “

My Mum with Hyperkalemia in Hospital was diagnosed. We didn't know anything about it. She died but they said it was Lung cancer and COPD as secondary despite lookong like she had a stroke weeks after the Hypokalemia. I only know she had a lot of these symptoms and it was all blamed on cancer and she didn't want chemo so they assumed she wanted to die. She wanted to live, a good life but they gave her morphine and something else when she had the stroke like event. No diagnosis about having a stroke in hospital but they overdosed her on morphine despite her not wanting morphine only wanted a panadol for her shoulder/thoracic pain. Learning that diagnosis don't seem to exist as hospital and doctor don't have time always so rushed
