Great job all around, Jen did fantastic, can’t wait to see her amazing progress. Inspiring! At a few weeks short of 62, I got back to cycling after finding running would no longer work with my knees. Five months in, and without really trying, I've dropped 15 pounds of fat, almost doubled my VO2 max, and raised my average speed for an hour by 60%. Seeing this makes me wonder what I could achieve if I had actual goals and a plan. I do have one: In May, just two weeks after dusting off my bike, I rode an organized event of 20 miles, but cycled to and from the start point and missed a turn, resulting in a 30-mile day. I thought I would die (if I could just be lucky enough). Now that that I can easily ride 30 miles four days a week at a 60% faster pace, I'm going for the 66-mile or maybe the century ride for the same event this coming May, and I'm going to make the top 20% of my age group.

Evening Mark and Jen. I competed in my first HYROX at Birmingham (inspired by discovering HYROX on your channel) in the 45-49 category. I’d trained hard for a couple of months and watched lots of HYROX videos and thought ‘I’d got this!!’ Well, I hadn’t!! It was brutal. Sled push, burpees and lunges killed me. Finish time of 1:22 when I thought I’d be somewhere between 1:12 and 1:18. My partner (who has now become my HYROX manager) suggested I enter the Malaga event next April which coincides with her birthday!! Along with entering the Brighton half marathon in February I’m hoping to get well below 1:20. I think more burpees and lunges are required in training!! All the above has been inspired by you and amazingly Joanne has now joined my gym which is unheard of so thank you for your brilliant channel.

I commented on here a little while ago about beginning a journey from fatness to fitness, and although my progress towards fitness hasn't been anything like as impressive as Jen's, it's still amazing when you notice the little things that make you think "oh, I could never have done that before". Since getting a job (good thing) I've had to fit my training into my lunch hours, which has probably slowed my progress down quite a bit but has also meant that while I'm at the gym I'm usually training at a much higher intensity than what I did when I had no time constraint. It continues to be a really interesting journey. Mark, given that you used to be of a very similar size to me when I started out, did you have to adopt any strategies or exercises to manage lower-leg niggles? I have a history of both foot and knee injuries and would hate for them to be a limiting factor as I try to make my whole body work better than it has been
@oneworldfamily
@oneworldfamily 2 жыл бұрын
It's great that you've committed your lunch hours to do your training, Martin. Imagine if everyone did that! You'd more than halve the demand on the NHS. Hope you're able to eat properly too. If I may add my answer to your question for Mark, a variety of training will be beneficial, focussing on strengthening the tissues around the formerly injured areas. As a former rower I'd also recommend the Concept 2 rowing machine. Rowing exercises all of the main muscle groups so it's an excellent catch-all. However, see if you can find a real rower to teach you proper technique rather than a rookie Personal Trainer. I've seen so many people taught poor technique that it's not enjoyable to them so they quit. Also, learn how profoundly consequential diet is on tissue healing, particularly resolving inflammation. So that'll be none of Mark's beloved doughnuts and sugar, significantly limiting crappy carbs, and plenty of oily fish and green vegetables etc.

Bwahahaha! She's right, your dog ought to "get it!" 😂 But seriously, its good to see that lessons can be learned even when no ones expecting it, and even by the more experienced athlete. Great, and somewhat humbling, experience for sure! Totally love your modesty, and your combined senses of humor. Looking forward to seeing the next couples Hyrox challenge (or any other couples challenge, for that matter). 👍🏾 Kudos to Jen for taking on the challenge and exceeding all expectations. Bravo!

Brilliant effort, content and humour as usual Mark. Great stuff. You should have known you were in trouble when Jen even knows what an acceptable 500m row pacing is…..she did great.

more great content. Back in 2008 I introduced my wife to running and cycling , since then she has a PB of 36 for 10k and sub 1:28 for a half marathon as well as numerous QOMs on the bike.I dont have any and cant run a sub 45 10k. I suggest you start getting used to the beast you have unleashed! I am doing Hyrox Manchester in Jan and looking for some tapering tips if you can spare a minute. Love your work

Love your content Mark and utter respect to Jen knocking it out of the park. I'm a former ultra runner and know the strength it takes mentally and reckon she would smash ultra running. Great stuff. 💪👍

Well done Jen love, banging effort. Mad how much more you can push yourself in a competitive environment, someone looks like they got the buzz.

That is an inspiring level of achievement. I have just started to put my health together and have never been interested and still are not in competition. But I have been inspired by epic events and have secured a place for a 200 mile cycling ride next summer so that is my motivation that I am working towards. Challenges and measurable milestones are so important.

Brilliant from the both of you. In hindsight it's easy to say you should have seen the improvements Jen was making. This was your first time doing it together. You'll learn loads from this personally and as a team. Also very motivational for me. I so want to do a Hyrox now. Well done 👊 👊

Fucking hell, found you out few days ago . i'm fairly big bloke even in my profession (demolition worker) and been trying to find ppl who are doing sports with weight above average ( i'm 125kg atm, been up to 140kg) i love and hate running... These videos give me so much joy & inspiration, Thanks from Finland (the land where there are REAL saunas, by the way! )

I had to laugh out loud at “leisurely 10k run” and “I’ll rest and recover during the run” But seriously, that was a top effort and you both did fantastically well. I really want to do a 5k next year. I know that seems like such a small goal but I want to start somewhere.

OK Sorry for spamming comments on this one, but there is a lot to say :). I'm really looking forward to hearing Jenn's comments on her journey, as I suspect it will inspire a LOT of people to get excited and motivated about what their body can _do_ and less focused on chasing non-functional appearance goals. Really enjoying seeing Jenn get into this and enjoying something challenging alongside you. Cheers!
